Local sports talk finished on 1250

Ahhhhhh Pittsburgh radio, already self-imploding! Pittsburgh radio has been deteriorating for years now, dropping or compromising formats left and right to all jump on the sports bandwagon in a sports town. Sorry kids, there's more to life than sports and now you're seeing the first signs that it is not financially viable to have so many sports sticks in one town, even a town like the Burgh. How many years must pass before Pittsburgh radio returns to a variety of stations to serve the needs of the listeners and the community???? Look at the examples that exist and ask yourself, why can't we do better????????? Pittsburgh is a great town, known across the country for livability, health care, renewal, why are we one of the suckiest places in the nation for radio? Why must the only AAA in town sound like a cross between a hillbilly station and a lesbian reading room instead of like an adult alternative station? Why must the "alternative" station in town sound like a sports station that plays a little music now and then? Why must "Bob" exist in the first place? Where's the urban station again? Online only? Why is one of the greatest jazz stations in the country threatened with extinction? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS TOWN? You think this is what the people want? Oh right, they want another sports stick right? OK owners, follow the money down the programming drain, remember it can only get worse until someone actually LOVES radio again.

Dude, you owe me a keyboard! That line made me spray Dunkin' Donuts coffee all over my computer!

11AM....no Stan, no Guy, despite running the promo all morning.
Stick a fork in 'em they're toast.

To be fair, the lesbian reading room is really only open during 9-5 M-F. I too hate what I refer to as "vagina music" but it's hardly 24/7.

Would that be lesbian drive time? :D

The ESPN Mother Ship pulled the plug on the stream for 1250. Website is gone too, they are just redirecting to ESPNradio.com.
All syndicated shows, although as of this morning they were still running canned promos for Stan and Guy, Stillers 360, etc.
Will probably be all national ads and PSA's by next week.

And yet every time I say a commercial AAA would do well here, the response I get is "The market has WYEP." I've maintained all along that they aren't very good.

But as far as the bigger picture goes, sad to say but WAMO and ESPN have now gone out of business. There's really no other way to look at it.

It says 2 things:
1) You can't survive as a standalone, which they both were, against the corporate groups.
2) The revenues here are pretty limited.

o ok thanks.

I think the the Pittsburgh Market needs 1 All-Sports station only on FM Side. (of course we need Urban & Urban AC)
All-Sports on AM is not going to do well as FM Sports stations.
If 93.7 were to pick up ESPN (CBS Radio does own some ESPN Stations like 1300am B-More) all the listeners would flock too ESPN.
and AM 970 should just switch to polka music

I could comment on the reasons for the demise of the station, but instead, I think that I would just like to say that I am very disheartened that so many wonderful people at that station lost their jobs and will not be entertaining and informing us any longer. This is a loss for all of us.

I believe Pittsburghers will look upon the 40 odd years of sports legacy at WTAE-WEAE and hold it with the same kind of reverence they give KQV as a Top 40 station, if not more.

If the Fan does not gain any traction now - it won't ever.

If for some reason, they can't get the 1250 talent, and make no further improvements - they will not gain anything.

Should they start shuffling schedules and air talent - getting KNOWN local people - they might crack a 2.0. Throwing national ESPN programming won't turn higher ratings.

Now, I've heard Radio Disney is shutting down in a lot of cities. What does this mean for 1250? For the one station to a market ownership - who would even be interested in buying 1250? Or would they just shut it down?

Even more interesting - what to do with 540? This is a killer signal that has been wasted on stupid formats for years. The Birach ownership and their internal soap opera - look it up online - will probably give us nothing but more snake oil shows and/or brokered ethnic programming.

I'm torn here. As a pro wrestling fan, this galls me b/c Mark Madden essentially gets the last laugh on his old station, instead of, you know, Madden getting fired again and finally being blackballed from Eastern PA radio for good.

At the same time, as a Cincinnatti native, I have a psychotic hatred of Myron Cope so I can finally rest easy that all the thousands of hours of Cope material sitting in the 1250 archives will be literally thrown into the trash at the end of the year.
