Just a few words of advice from the old Brooklyn Buckaroo…
I don’t know the man that you are referring to …But I know the archetype that you are describing very well. Well Sir, the best way to counterbalance something that sucks is to not suck. Being decent, and ethical, open-minded, hard working, innovative and creative; Is ultimately the best way to do any business …because it is good business. This old silverback has been kicked to the curb many times because I have held on to those ideals… That being said -(In my younger days I must admit that I might have drawn a few too many lines in the sand.)
Hey... remember the Seinfeld episode when George started doing the exact opposite of his usual MO. He wound up with a hot girlfriend and a great job with the New York Yankees… Believe me, that can work in the radio business. I am lucky enough (despite all well meaning admonishments) to be able to prove that point in my current position. I am hitching my wagon to that developing that niche.
Be the better guy… lead by example. Do it the right way to the greatest extent possible and show the people who are at the top of the top-down management pyramid that it is good business. You’ll be a lot happier… and as a mere side effect the “less-scrupulous” will become less significant.
Taking the highroad to the land of milk and honey,
Louie
