Lois Melkonian comes to KTRH 740

Has Lois Melkonian "moved" to Houston?

I may be all alone with this, but I have a hunkin' sneach that Lois Melkonian has NOT relocated herself to Houston. I suspect she still lives in Denver, and her voice is the only part of her that has moved to Houston and KTRH.

An announcer's actual physical location hasn't been an important factor in radio for a long time. People can do entire shows from anywhere. We hear it all the time. With the size and scope of the Clear Channel Evil Empire, one CC news department or newscaster can do news for any number of other CC stations.

Lois Melkonian is not a spring chicken. She's been in the business at least 20 years, she's married with three teenage sons, so she has roots in Denver. Even though KOA and the Denver papers make it sound like she's pulled up stakes and moved to Houston, I don't think she has.

I formed that opinion this morning when I listened to her on KTRH for the first time. Matt Patrick's voice had the clear and crisp sound of a live voice when he tossed it to her for the news, but her voice had that distinct sound of a "canned" VT.

I think she still lives in Denver. Not that there's anything wrong with that. The floor is open.....

I suspect you are on to something. Cheap Channel tried to pass off Joe Pags as being in Houston when he was on mid-mornings at KTRH (while he was actually at WAOI). His mis-pronunciations and clue-less-ness when it came to local issues was sickening. If her job is being the 'giggling school-girl/sidekick' I suppose she could do that from Denver. I haven't listened to KTRH since this 'show' started.

I admit this is just pure speculation on my part. I just cannot believe a married woman with three teenage sons would uproot herself and her family from a very healthy and lively radio market like Denver and move to Houston, where the radio market is NOT healthy or lively.

Young unmarrieds and young couples with no children are willing to take risks like that, but mature people with families won't do it if they don't have to. And with today's radio technology they DON'T have live in a city to do the news there.

Now if she's divorced, that would shine a different light on a move like that. I don't know if that's the case.

It's also possible that she's the "trailing spouse," whose husband has moved here, or been transferred here. That's not uncommon in our business. I've read that her husband is an actor, for whatever that's worth.

Having said all that, I still believe Ms Melkonian's voice may be in Houston, but her feet, her family and her home are in Denver.

curious? why do you insist that she's not here in houston.
isn't houston a major market- larger and more recognized than denver?

NEVERMIND new to board, read entire thread, understand you are carrying some
baggage and apparently unpacking it here on this message board.
disagree wholeheartedly about living and working in houston.
the economy, the people and living in a big city with 24/7 action
has suited me so far, traffic and humidity notwithstanding.

He slams Houston but is talking about radio here, not the city as I understand it. I too, love Houston but Cheap Channel is what it is. Of course, if she is Bryan Erickson and companies 'new pick' she will feel nothing but love and welcome up on Post Oak. Just watch your back!

West Loop South. The Post Oak facility was vacated in 2004 or so.

Now, if Lois were headed to, say, KFI in L.A., I'd buy this.

Well...I am in Houston. Can't believe I've been here for all 33 100-plus degree days.
I am not married to an actor. And me, a trailing spouse? Now THAT made me laugh out loud.
My teenaged son has joined me here, he started his first day of school yesterday...not easy as a junior.
Many reasons why I came here. Bottom line, I've got a great job.
Thanks for the entertaining comments...I'm looking forward to an interesting ride here.

It's a pleasure to meet you LoisMel. You say you really have relocated to Houston, so my speculation that you were voice-tracking your news from Denver has been shot down, along with my other cockamamie "trailing spouse" theory about how and why you left Denver for Houston.

Speaking as someone who spent a lot of years working in Houston radio, some of them at KTRH, please allow me to welcome you to town. Since I now live some distance from Houston, I'm not able to listen as often as I would like, but you have brought a fresh and professional presence to town, and I wish you the best.

I've spent a good deal of time in Denver over the years, and I've experienced several Denver blizzards. Well, let me tell you, you can forget about blizzards in Houston. In fact, it almost never snows. People have gone their entire lives in Houston without ever seeing it snow.

BTW: Houston has only two seasons. Summer and January. There's a few weeks of chilly weather in January, and that's what passes for winter. Wait till you see how crazy the town gets whenever there's a little ice on the roads. The schools close and the town just shuts down. You'll die laughing.

Lois, welcome to Houston. Don't turn your back on Erickson. Don't buy a house!

...and you may want to K.T.R.H.!!!

Why do companies do that? They bring someone in from out of town, make them think everything is hunky for a year or so; then, just about the time that individual thinks it's going to be a good gig and buys a house, they start treating them crappy. The new hire stays around and puts up with it, because they're stuck with a house they just bought and can't sell for what they bought it for. The management knows this, and abuses the hell out of them. Eventually, the individual gets depressed, walks away from their house note and departs the market with no prospect for another job. I watched this happen time and again at another outfit I worked for. Fortunately, many of them eventually landed in greener pastures, but the damage had already been done. Sad. Just sad. ???

Welcome to Houston Lois. I work in radio across town from you, but I wish you and your family, the best here. Houston is a great city, with many wonderful people... some of them are even in radio (kidding guys). I think some of the comments of the condition of Houston radio are valid, and maybe we ALL need to work on that to change it. Those are just my thoughts. Again welcome to town, I'll tune in and check you out!
