I live in Houston, and I was in Dallas for the weekend and I have to say, I really enjoyed listening to what they have done to 92.5. There where a couple of country songs I could have done without, but overall it was nice to "FINALLY" hear something different in radio! I am 39, and it has been the same crap since I was in high school on the radio and it is very refreshing to see that someone in radio has to "nads" to try something different. I like the way they handled the comercials also.
 
Although I am not a fan of the rating system, I could care less of the Arbitron magic when it comes to Lonestar, largely because of what Mr. Head has shared.

It is different. And next to Gimarc's madness (which I can understand but still don't get), that is the only thing that can save this industry from becoming... oh, you know... TV. ;)

I am not an avid listener to KZPS,but I do tune in every now and then and it is refreshing to hear something different than the assembly line crud cookie cutter cluster out there. Again a reminder,they went back 32 years ago and just resurrected the old "KAFM". They played the rock and "progessive country" back then. It could be worse..KLLI,KLNO and other excuses for radio.

Not an employee and not in radio. I was just giving my opinion, my opinion and 50 cents only gets you a soda water. I used to post on this board about my loathing of the current state of radio, but I got so frustrated I just gave up on radio as a whole. Anyone living in Houston can attest to how bad radio is programmed from a musical standpoint. Radio is on life support, just like print newspapers and broadcast television.

Yes,,it incorporates "Classic Rock!",,"Alt Country!" & "Americanna!"

Which the later two have had a foothold in the DFW market elsewhere for the last 10 years!
 
Yeah, but even the most bereft curmudgeon would have to admit that Shotgun Willie's station is mixing it better than most have in the past. That's why it works. Not the music selections... hell, my iPod can sound like that, but for some reason, it doesn't sound as nice coming through my jam box...er...stereo.

Lonestar 92.5 may not be the station for mass appeal but it certainly taps a nerve in DFW. I personally like the format. It's real radio before all the corporate nonsense. The ironic thing is that its owned by the monster that in my opinion is at least partiallly responsible for the current state of radio today. Go figure...
 
I don't wanna break up the lovefest here...but I wonder if CC wasn't hoping for more of a return with all the $$$$$ they spent on TV, marketing, and such. Not to mention all the FREE press they got. What was it... 2.4 to a 2.5 in the book between the old ZPS and the new Lonestar???

While ocassional refreshing is "nice".... I would insist that a radio station be "refreshing" all the time. Any habitual lapses into non-refreshing music is a bad mark, and so unecessary. Just becasue something is better than the other guys corporate driven playlists does not in itself make it worth listening to.

I want great FM programming, not something just a little better than what the other guys play.

But really, why do we even have these discussions.... The Music is programmed for "The Masses".... And that's banality from the get-go... And no, I will not get on board!!
 
I think they're doing a pretty good job of balancing the familiar and the obscure. I heard turn the page, some tired Steve Miller, and some worn out SRV, but then I heard Grateful Dead three times this afternoon. And then I heard Elvis is Everwhere by Mojo Nixon. I sat in my car after I arrived at my destination, just to hear it. That doesn't happen very often.

Um, a couple of things.

1. MIX isn't a mix, it's a turnstile of slop that flings against the wall anything from Stevie Nicks and her meddlesome witchcraft to Michael Jackson and <insert your joke here> to Gwen Stefani and her overrated self. For what it's worth, Lonestar has the mix, or balance, or equilibrium, or symmetry even done right. Don't screw this up, Shotgun. We know where you live. The closer we get, the hungrier we get. It's usually a dead giveaway.

2. I'm sorry... "some worn out SRV". And so close to the anniversary date too. Shameful.

Except that most people in the market couldn't hear it... KHYI's signal, even in its current C2 form, doesn't provide any sort of city grade signal to Dallas or Tarrant Counties. Most of the time KHYI has been on the air, the signal was weaker (originally a class A that upgraded to a C3 and now a C2).
