Long-gone STL radio outlets worth reviving

Are any of you old enough to remember KSD 550 FORMAT 1966? WRTH 590 was easy listening,KSTL 690 religious, WEW 770 easy listening,I don't remember the format ON 1260 WIBV. and I remember WOKZ but not the format. KWK 1380 I think was big band. KATZ 1600 was screaming preachers as far back as I can remember. WIL AM 1430 was the same music as KXOK. KMOX was local talk shows news and some music. 1957-1966 then I never heard ST.Louis radio again. we moved to the west coast.

KYKY has done a good job with those that grew up on 98/KSLQ.. I remember when we (Way-Fm) bought the old transmitter on top of their downtown tower site, back in the early 90's... Bob Augsburg and I drove up from Nashville and I was in AWE, knowing that "Super-Q", 98-K.S.L.Q. and Joel Denver's magic went the that Carborater (Exciter) and Engine (Transmitter).. They moved it to the street by 'Copter.. I found some Sales Packets up there.. Their ENG gave me about 10.. They are stored in my radio boxes...

As I recalll Joel Denver was the last PD of KSLQ...Bad rartings and call and format changed to an AC!

Al Casey was the first PD that built the fire at 98.1 !

Thanks... I stand corrected.... Just loved the stickers of SUPER "Q" and the :15, :30 and :45 seques... "KSLQ"...'98-KSLQ' and simply "Q"......

I used to just love both KWK (AOR format) as well as KSLQ. In it's heyday, Hit Radio KHTR was a high energy machine.....remember the TV show that they had?

I used to like 1260 WIBV when it was a talk station before Tim Dorsey bought it that was mostly focused on the East side with Limbaugh, Chuck Harder, Bruce Williams, and others. Other ones that come to my mind - "Breeze 97" KLTH 97.1 circa 1988 or 89 when it ran a very interesting "New Adult Contemporary" format that was sort of an early version of the Smooth Jazz format. I also really enjoyed Smooth Jazz on KNJZ 100.3 FM circa 1990-1993, and again on Smooth 106.5 WSSM circa 2000 - 2006 or therabouts.

I liked the Classic Country format on the last incarnation of WIL-AM before Bonneville sold the station; 104.1 "The Mall" WMLL with the 80s format around 2000-2003 or so; Contemporary Christian 104.9 WCBW 1980s to 1998; although Joy FM is a reasonable faxsimilie. KADI AM with oldies in the early 80s at 1320AM, KGLD 1380, and Kool 590 WKLL also with oldies. Also miss the Beautiful Music format of KEZK 102.5 circa the 1980s, and 101 WMRY circa mid to late 80s with a Progressive AOR format.

Radioaircheck, I enjoyed KMOX-FM from that era as well. I started to listen to the station around the time they were carrying the "Robert W. Morgan Special Of The Week" show. The station had an Adult Contemporary format, but had a deeper playlist. Since KMOX was the principal money maker, I suspect this station flew under-the-radar for several years.

Between 1978-9, KCFM (93.7 MHz, owned by Harry Eidelman), had a format similar to KMOX-FM, with a greater emphasis on AOR artists. It was a forerunner to the AAA format of today.

KXOX AM 630 with live and local DJ'S ALL DAY. AND WIL AM 1430 OLDIES WITH LIVE DJ'S ALL DAY. STANDARDS ON KWK 1380 AM... JohnnyOhJohnny posted on page 1 of this thread.

His username is a direct reference to the fictional character Bruno J Grunion, I'm pretty sure. Johnny Rabbitt's self-voiced sidekick was a total blast, babe.

That was what I was responding to! KXOK was the best ever, during the heyday of Don Pietromonico (aka Johnny Rabbitt).
