Looking for suggestions...

We're in need of a new syndicated show to fill a 7p-10p slot. My preference is to air something live, or mostly live. Right now, I'm leaning toward Fox's John Gibson, but we already have Rush & Hannity, so I would like to stay away from going too much conservative, maybe even offer something lefty. We've even kicked around the possibility of putting on Dave Ramsey, but the tape delay has me bugged. I definitely don't want to do Savage or Rusty Humphries. I'm really tired of the same old-same-old that has landed on my desk. Any personal favorites?

You might consider Peter B. Collins out of Monterey, just introduced into syndication (6pm-9pm Eastern).

I don't expect Majority Report to be around too much longer. Poor clearances and Janeane seems to have other interests.

Not much in that time slot that's live or mostly live and not politically conservative.
If you wanted to take another conservative, Jay Severin might be worth considering.
If you were willing to take a show on delay, I'd consider Clark Howard (over Dave Ramsey).
Stephanie Miller has done OK on delay in the early evening in a few markets; might also be a contender, if she's available in your market.

My guess is that you are looking for a replacement for Phil Hendrie. I'd go with Stephanie Miller. She's funny, appeals to the same young male audience that likes Hendrie's show, and uses lots of bits similar to Hendries format. That being said, I still feel that replacing Hendrie is going to be a challenge.

If you can get Savage, you take Savage. Too conservtive? What will bring ratings? Isn't that the goal? Program with the head not the heart. With Rush and Hannity... the obvious answer is to stay conservative.

The market I am programming to is actually made up more of registered Democrats than Republicans. Like I said, I already have Rus & Hannity, so if I added Savage, I'm afraid it may make the station look as if it's being programmed conservatively (in fact, I'm already being accused of that). I'm liking the Stephanie Miller suggestion...a female would definetly be a nice change of pace. Savage is available in our market, but the GM and I both agree that we don't want him (and we are both conservatives). True, Savage gets good numbers, but I personally think the guy is difficult to listen to. Please keep the suggestions coming.

Phil Hendrie did a bit on his last show (Friday night) where one of his characters--Vernon Dosier--complained about getting physically ill at the thought of his 67 year old mother law having sex with her new boyfriend. As a big fan of Phil Hendrie, I too would get physically ill if I tuned in to Hendrie's time period Monday night and wound up listening to Michael Savage.

You need to program toy your listeners. Those saying it's "programmed conservatively" are not your target. Putting Miller on may, as ridiculous as it sounds, make your listeners angry. But they are your target.

Savage gets good numbers. End of story.

No offense, but John Gibson???!!! What is this trend with people who've never done radio shows before suddenly launching into syndication? Stop it already! Doyle, Gibson, Snow... ugh, ugh, ugh. Mind you, Gibson is live 6-9pm ET, so even if you're on the east coast (which it seems you're not), he still wouldn't be all live.

Your listeners apparently disagree with you. Although I would admit TRN is difficult to work with, they force other crap on you, and the engineering is crap.

I know this is anathema in this day and age, but why not go LOCAL? Listeners appreciate having live/local talk at night. How much can it cost? If that's out of the question, move the syndicated talker on in PMD to nights and go local earlier.

As to Miller and Majority Report (another headscratcher, what are you people thinking?), if you don't have any listeners with conservative talk, then flip to liberal talk, but don't do some hodge-podge routine. Maybe Ed Schultz buried late at night, but even he doesn't have much entertainment value to salvage his progressive views in the minds of your RW audience. Not that libtalk should be out of the question, but if you require entertainment value without flipping to libtalk, why not Glenn Beck? Get on board while the TV show is still on. Or, while I can't stand her, Laura Ingraham is viewed by some as entertaining. Who cares if it's live? Ingraham, for example, is on at 8pm in NYC and 10pm in Boston. I'd say WABC and WTKK know something about programming.

Voter registration means nothing..find an audience and program to them. Local is great but whoever it is is going to have to take time to build an audience. You may well go through three or four hosts to find one who clicks. You need to be in it for the long haul.

He should be in it for the long haul. Even USA Today realizes satradio is going nowhere; it's not like he can't afford to give it 9 months or a year

Oops! I guess I stepped out of line with my earlier post. Sorry, mods.
