One thing, though ... when I've listened to them around sunset, I've never noticed them switch. Normally I notice when a station switches, as they are briefly off the air while making the switch. Or, maybe it's possible that the Mexican stations switch at a different time than the U.S. stations. For example I've noticed XEWW-690 switch at a different time than the San Diego stations. Also XEUT-1630 usually signs off at midnight and XEQIN-1160 San Quintin usually comes on at, IIRC, 5 am with 10kW, regardless of sunrise time.
I was listening to 1700 for quite a while last night and there most definitely was a third station and possibly a fourth in addition to the two regulars KVNS and WJCC.
It couldn't have been WEUP from Huntsville, Al because that gospel religious station has a distinct sound.
What I first heard for an instant was some announcer saying the two words 'Ohio State'. That was all I heard and then it was gone.
What I was hearing a bit later came in at times briefly and at one point rivaled the strength of KVNS and WJCC which both were quite weak at that moment.
It was some kind of talk show but it was not sports. I did hear them mention something about the solar cycle.
Could that have been KKLF from Richardson, Texas?

What time of the night was it? I briefly heard a C2C program mention something about the solar cycle within the past couple nights, but I don't remember what time it was. As I was busy with other things, I was unable to continue listening.
I was listening to 1700 again for the past half hour and KVNS was coming in much better than WJCC.
During a couple of the cycles where KVNS would get real strong, in the background of their signal I could hear what sounded like a sports announcer but with the music on KVNS, it was impossible to hear exact words.

I was listening again tonight and there was definitely a sports broadcast on the station I was hearing on 1700.
Listen closely.
The weak signal peaks after about 20 seconds into the video and at about 29 seconds, you clearly hear the words 'National League'.

That DOES sound like the ESPN baseball announcer for the Phillies/Cardinals game I was listening to maybe an hour or so ago on 1700 here. I wonder if someone could chime in and let us know whether the other sports station on 1700 was NOT airing that game this evening?
I wonder if there's a chance you might catch something during commercial breaks? Maybe they might do some local spots.

KBGG in Des Moines, Ia is sports and ESPN so they probably were carrying the game also. Unless you can get an ID or some local commercial we will never be sure.
I went to the website of 1700 The Champ, the station of Iowa and sent them a message asking if they could tell me what game they were broadcasting last night. I'll see what they say.
It occurred to me only later after my reception of the mystery sports station last night to see what KBGG from Iowa had on their live stream and it was post game coverage of the Eagles/49ers game that has just ended.
I was unable to get any live stream from XEPE during the time I was hearing that sports station on 1700. They have available live streaming but it was not broadcasting anything I think because of some kind of blackout rules or something.
The station I was hearing with the sports seemed strongest when the radio was pointed in the same direction as KVNS. That in itself doesn't prove it was XEPE and doesn't rule out KBGG but it's worth mentioning.

Even assuming they do change signal patterns, I don't think there's enough of a null to prevent their signal from getting quite far east.
As I recall, someone here once said XEPE can often be loud even into Texas. Not only that, almost half the signal path's skip from XEPE if it could make it here would be over the Gulf too. That's probably why KVNS has such a good signal here.

I remember XEPE broadcasting the Tigers/Yankees game this evening. Did you by any chance listen to any commercials during breaks? Something there could provide a major clue, as XEPE very often airs commercials intended for San Diego or Mexico. Examples of things I've heard from their Mexican-oriented ads are "during the government of the president,..." "This program is public, not related to any political party, and shall not be used for any purpose other than stated in the program", and maybe other things. Sometime maybe I'll see if I can dig up some audio examples, if you'd like.
I got a reply from my inquiry into which game KBGG was broadcasting Sunday night and he said it was the Tigers/Yankees game.

XEPE should only be as strong as XEUT(1630, 1.3 miles east)in, say Texas. After a check of the DAN plot, a more than 10db signal
reduction(down to 1kw ERP) eastward is REQUIRED, to protect any and all 1700 stations located NE, E, SE. It should be similar to
any of the other X-Banders from CA that are 1kw, ND, at night, not stronger...
