Looks like the Zone has Fox Sports Radio again

I don't know what all the fuss is with ESPN. Did it do much for the zone? It was used for fill in off hours so no loss. Or am I way off base?

I like this news. I'll take Fox Sports over BSPN anyday.

Why? (Serious question). The last time the Zone had Fox Sports, it was absolutely horrible. Pretty bad when the best show was JT the Brick. What makes it better now?

I really like the Ben Maller show on weekend overnights. I also enjoy Seth Everett and John Fricke when they fill on FSR.

I really don't understand why Fricke doesn't have a full time radio job somewhere.

I don't think Petros and Money will play well in Nashville, though I enjoy their show.

What made or makes it any more horrible than ESPN? It was and will be used to fill the off hours on the zone like ESPN was so big deal.

So on todays lineup, it looks like the 3 Hour Lunch is on @ 3 pm and 4 hours long.
I really think they need a NEW name for the 3 Hour Lunch since it is no longer on during Lunch time but during Dinner time or Happy Hour. It is also going to be 4 hours on most evenings.

BSPN is SO dominate....I like alternatives to get (hopefully) a different viewpoint. So it's nice to have Fox Sports and Yahoo Sports.

I don't like how BSPN pushes their weight around and restricts open dialog.

And I still say there is a need for a live/local overnite call-in show.

.................

You guys are arguing over time-filler programming in overnight and way-off-peak hours. Isn't there something more interesting to discuss?

And yet you posted about it. LOL. What may not be interesting to you may be interesting to others. Half the population works nights now and those people still like to listen to the radio. Didn't Art Bell prove there's an audience for overnite radio? Most truckers run at night.

I wish just ONE local sports station would try an overnight live/local call-in show.

Sorry mghtn but it's all about $$ now and no station is going to pay a host when you can put on ESPN or FSR for (almost) free.

Interesting sidebar to the above discussion, had WSM gone to sports 10 years ago AND added a live overnight talk show (both scenarios highly unlikely!), such a show would have had a potentially nationwide (or close to it) audience, assuming that enough people would still listen to AM radio.

I just remember the many problems FSR caused for the Zone, including an incident in which an FSR evening show host made jokes about a serious Nashville Predators injury. While I don't see much chance or need for a local overnight show, I do think Cumulus might be wise to try regional evening programming, shows that could play on several of their sports stations. For instance, I could see an SEC-related or Southern Sports show that could play here and on several sports or news-and-sports talk stations now owned by Cumulus I could see such a show running Monday through Friday nights on several stations, even though some in the group might not air it every night due to play-by-play.

Problem with Cumulus, and I agree with what you said FWIW, is that they really don't like to be the ones doing the syndicating. They'd much rather just pull it from a bird than to pay to have it sent to one for everyone else.

Cumulus just bought Citadel with its rather large syndication arm. Now Cumulus is originating dozens of shows daily.

They inherited that. Trust me, I've heard it out of the Dickey's own mouths about how they loathed talent that would push for syndication due to the cost involved. They will make a go of it now because of the competitive nature between them and Clear Channel. Up until then, they had to rely on a third party to get satellite space etc. if anyone was lucky (or unlucky) enough to get syndicated while on a Cumulus station.

That was then, this is now. In the past year, the Dickeys often cited Citadel Media as one of the reasons they wanted Citadel. They now want programming they can own and run on multiple stations and still make some money by syndicating it to others as well. I do know about some past history you are speaking of, however, Cumulus hasn't liked "whiney" employees who would always bug management about getting them syndicated. That's a bit of a different situation, more about their opinions of certain employees rather than about not wanting to operate a syndication house.
