They will make a go of it now because of the competitive nature between them and Clear Channel. Up until then, they had to rely on a third party to get satellite space etc. if anyone was lucky (or unlucky) enough to get syndicated while on a Cumulus station.
That was then, this is now. In the past year, the Dickeys often cited Citadel Media as one of the reasons they wanted Citadel. They now want programming they can own and run on multiple stations and still make some money by syndicating it to others as well. I do know about some past history you are speaking of, however, Cumulus hasn't liked "whiney" employees who would always bug management about getting them syndicated. That's a bit of a different situation, more about their opinions of certain employees rather than about not wanting to operate a syndication house.
