Los Angeles Radio Ratings: June 2023

Something I should have added to a previous post, the Spanish settlers who owned land and lived here in California almost never called themselves "Mexicans". They and their descendants to this day call themselves "Californios" .That would include the late Hollywood actor Leo Carrillo of which one of his ancestors Jose Antonio Carrillo who was a Los Angeles Mayor in the mid 1800s. Many of these folks did not wish to be associated with the govt of Mexico as they viewed it as impossibly corrupt. And most opted for independence from Mexico, and some few were even in favor of joining the US.

And Zorro, was a fictional character in "Old California" created by a non-Hispanic!
Yeah, but...

Yeah, but...

And the California city of Murrieta is named after him!

Check out the incredible Huell Howser impersonations on youtube that Dana Gould does:

One of the best Huell Howser shows I ever saw was when he went to Watts. I’m such a fan that I bought some Huell Howser shirts from the marketing department at KVIE & they are…..amaaazing!

Yeah, but...

I never knew this story, it's fascinating! As Frank Morgan once said,"Well, bust my buttons!"

And as Huell Howser would have said, "That's the most SPECTACULAR thing I've ever heard!"

Kpwr is not doing well at all. I highly doubt they are in the top 10.
Same thing with go country they have a small audience and it's growing every day. Saul might have to change formats if billing doesn't Improve
Well KPWR is still holding on for dear life in this battle with KRRL. I can’t see Power 106 leaving LA despite the fact that their audience is dwindling. In the 90’s when 92.3 The Beat was around Power still managed to hit the Top 5. Both stations were doing well at the time. The younger crowd was either tuned to 92.3 or 105.9 and both stations sounded the same even though Power still played dance hits until late ‘96/early ‘97 such as Planet Soul, Artie The 1 Man Party, Angelina, Devoné, Lina Santiago, etc. Let me wrap up this post before I get nostalgic on this board and start talking about the 90’s Power 106 lol.

If the owner of KPWR does change formats. (I'm not saying he would) KPWR Could take on KRTH. It would be an interesting battle.

Speaking of LA radio, this caught my attention today:

Radio Korea, for the uninitiated is AM 1540 using the heritage call letters of KMPC.
And just up the dial at 1650 is KFOX their competiton and of course down the dial is KYPA 1230

It's fascinating how both KRRL and 98.7 were able to surpass Power 106 and KROQ respectively in the 6+ ratings.

After all these were way more than just heritage stations; they were nationally-acclaimed massive brands that literally defined the formats they were in.

Decades ago. History and national acclaim buy you nothing in the current moment.

They were not "national brands" except in positioning statements like "world famous K-Rock".

Within the industry, famous. But with listeners, nada.

There is no format hole in LA. Power 106 going up against krth would be an epic fail. It will never happen. Power and kroq are here to stay. The 80s is covered in this city there is no room at the inn for anymore melt with you or pick ur burned out 80s
