Here is the thing...I too think its all about HOW its done. Isn't Mojo in Cincy still around? Susquehanna just ran it well, had great jocks, and promotions...Radio 101! And it kept growing after all the jammin oldies stations fell off the earth.

But on the other hand, I think can be true of any format. If the station is better than the others...it will win...right?

IMO- I think Chicago would really like a Mainstream AC as well. If someone did it well, told people about it, and stayed with it for a couple years they would roll in the cash! WLIT's direction leaves this WIDE open.

> If done correctly, it can.

Easier said than done, of course.

All I'm saying is the format on Love FM sounds a lot like the Jammin' Oldies format that was already tried here years ago...and it didn't work. You can only hear "Last Dance" and "I'm So Excited" so many times.

I'd like to hear a gold based format that plays songs & artists that people like that none of the other stations play. I was using the Albany station as an example. Albany isn't Chicago, but neither is Cinncinati. Just because the R&G format works in Cincy, doesn't mean it's going to work in Chicago. Especially when there are plenty of other Chicago stations overexposing a lot of the titles Love seems to be pounding.

I still think a well programmed soft, traditional, gold based AC would do remarkably well. 'Course, I could be an idiot. Apparently I am.

This is the 5th time someone has tried rhythmic oldies/Urban Oldies.

Some history:

WGCI-AM Dusty Radio 1390 (Basically in the 1s. Flipped because of WUBT although there was a difference)

WXXY/WYXX (Didn't get past the 0s until The 80s Channel. Flipped becasue of WUBT)

WUBT (Maxed out in the mid 3s 12+ By the time CC flipped it to Kiss, it was down into the 2s as it is now)

WWYW

WILV

Based on what's been done previously I'm going to say if it's done properly the ratings will either stay the same or fall into the 1s.

Of course 12+ doesn't mean much right? So I could be wrong here.

Many reasons behind why Dusty Radio flipped, one was to allow for Gospel which Elroy is a firm, staunch believer in, hence their HD on V

True and once again, stupidity in action

Format was killed for conflicts within the portfolio and in fighting between V103 and NUA not liking the fact that many of the titles were in rotation at the "families" stations.

C'mon, it was programmed out of NYC by their consultant wh, poorly executed, once again a format cloned and destroyed by those who don't know what they're doing.

> WILV
Stopped the bleeding at 100.3 but the "Love" thing is as out of place as "Soul" on 106.3. Jammin' Oldies will bill and as long as the format grows and not forced to stagnate to stop infighting between other stations in the portfolio it's viable. They need jocks badly, the jocks are as mismatched at the LOVE.

Yeah...I suppose. But in these trying & stress filled times,
a little Barry Manilow and Carpenters sure hits the spot.

I couldn't agree with you more, especially with Chicago getting a more mainstream AC. It would be interesting competition.

This all just doesn't make since. Why the hell would Love FM do this? Even though they're not playing all Jammin' Oldies, they're still playing quite a few, apparently. What is Guy thinking?

Someone mentioned that a new PD is coming in. I assume they will be replacing Guy?

From what I've heard on there, it just sounds like the regular WLTW, just with no 90s or current songs. I'd consider classic Soft AC to be what AC stations sounded like 10-15 years ago. They were not playing disco, like WLTW's HD2 seems to be playing a lot of.

According to Feder, the new PD (Formerly PD for WLS, WYTZ, etc) was chosen to program this new format.

I still think it's a test or expirament. They're still playing Spandau Ballet - True, Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You and some Phil Collins stuff and Ace - How Long. I don't think there's anything about Ace - How Long that makes anybody feel good. Same thing goes with Time by The Culture Club. I just LOVE to groove at work to Boy George whining (sarcasm intended)

I think the ratings will determine wheather feel good stays for good or not.

If you lived in the 70's or 80's you would not be questioning these tunes.

"Feel good" is when these people think back to those tunes being currents and they were kids. That is what retro radio is supposed to do.

Jeremy, you will understand it when you are 30, and some kid your age you are now, comments the same way about some late 90's tune you grew up on!!!!
______________

I grew up on Soft AC and 50s-60s Oldies. I've known all three of those songs since I was a toddler in a car seat and they make me feel great in a different sort of way. So it's not really about that. It's more of when they say "Feel Good" it makes me think "Jammin Oldies" and "Move & Groove" and those songs don't really fit that catigory.

Oh well. I guess that's why Guy calls it "Rhythm & Gold"

Sorry if I upset anyone in my above post. Definately didn't mean it in that way.
______________

WNIC in Detroit has AC ballads/love songs on their new HD signal. IMO, It sounds more like the original soft AC sound from 15-20 years ago. Here's a link to the stream:

Do you think ANY listeners have a clue what "Jammin Oldies" are, much less what "fits" the label? All they know is what they like. They call it whatever they want.
