LP stations in Victoria still off the air

I noticed KVLJ-LP and K211DR have been off the air for some time now.
Also yes K290BC is still Spanish.

But K290BC lists KVRT as the primary station...

Somehow I don't think KVRT plays Mexican music and calls itself La Ley "The Law" in Spanish.
Seems ironic to me... LOL

Well if you go by radio locator, they are not always accurate on formats, like K246BD is saying they are "the horn" which is not true they are Spanish.

True, but K246BD uses KTXX HD2. K290BC doesn't retransmit KVRT at all. I believe at one point it used to retransmit KGGB (same owners, BTW), however KGGB hasn't been on the air in, I don't know, a long time?

I used FCCInfo.com for info. That's an easy way to pull up any station you want on the FCC's database.

Isn't KVRT in HD? If so, isn't it entirely plausible that South Texas PBS is leasing a subchannel to the La Ley operation with the 105-9 translator attached to it?

...and where have YOU been, jras? See what happens when you get too close to Austin? You got uppity, LOL! Hello over there from H-Town!

That's a fair point. I haven't heard KVRT's HD signals, so it's very possible. I was just making the posts solely based on this operator's history with stations in San Antonio and other places.

LOL and people come, go, and come back again with these forums. ;)

KVRT is the only station in Victoria that has HD, I don't have my HD radio hooked up any more out there so I'm not sure what the sub channels are any more.

It's all good.
Even if it's not retransmitting the HD, it's not like the FCC's going to do much. LOL

Yep, KVRT is all you get with the purchase of an HD radio in Victoria, Texas. I had heard KITE...er KNAL...was implementing it as well, but that's just gossip. Closest HD station to Victoria, other than KVRT, would be STPBS co-owned KEDT down in Corpus.

While we're on the subject of HD, has anyone heard of any translators running HD? I don't recall any. If that were to happen though it could retransmit it's own HD 2. LOL

I'm reasonably sure that a translator can pass through the mother stations full HD signal, including sub channels, but it can't generate it's own HD-2 signals, since translators aren't allowed to originate programming.

That's the way I've always understood it as well. No subchannels for a translator are allowed, but if the company wants to run HD from the primary on it that's permitted. Being that the strongest translators are a mere 250 watts, you wouldn't get much distance on the digital signal anyway. It could financially work for a signal like The App in San Antonio, where the signal is smack dab in the center of a largely populated city, but not so much in a fairly small town like Victoria.

Considering the cost of HD equipment and licensing, it would have to be a very densely populated area for it to make sense. HD seems to work best within the 70 dbu contour, and passably in a car in the 60 dbu contour. For most translators that isn't very far. Since every big city has a lot of radio choices (maybe 50 or even a lot ore more) adding a station than might garner 1 or 2% of the audience in a 6 mile radius doesn't seem cost effective. YMMV

And if your lucky in Victoria, KNTE is also broadcasting in HD

A REAL RF translator can pass ALL RF from the main....analog and HD...BUT most "translators" are not real translators...they are Repeaters....with audio down to demod and then modulated back up.....A REAL xlator never would go to audio.....but good luck on that

I highly doubt KITE KNAL, or any of those stations will ever go HD. They are not even online yet.

I do know that they don't want to pay stream licensing fees, that's why they aren't online. They'd lose money if they did it the legal way, paying the correct fees. Still I guess they might get more willing advertisers if they went online, it's just something they don't seem too interested in.

If they go HD, they could use one of their HD signals to feed a translator (97.5 or a 3rd party like 105.9), so that might make them more money than online. I do agree with you though it would be nice to have webstreams of some of their stations. Their decision though, and as for me I'd sure not wanna lose money if I didn't have to.

You can have people sponsor the stream, have ads in on the page and that would pay for the fee's.

I've heard of that, it just didn't cross my mind before I posted the last message...
Whatever the reason though, thanks for coming out and saying it. Radioworks is long overdue for streaming... I mean literally everyone else seems to be doing it nowadays so it must be worthwhile.
