And KTGM-14 is full-powered, despite only broadcasting at 11 kW. They have a digital allocation on channel 17.

Correct - and I'll have to e-mail Doug to update w9wi.com about WBGH-CA's status vis-a-vis WETM.

Here's what happened:

WICZ-TV 40 was the longtime (1957) NBC affiliate in Binghamton. In 1995 (I think that was the year), WICZ changed affiliation to Fox, and with only three commercial allocations to Binghamton, that left no NBC affiliate in the market. That's when WBGH-CA came on the air, co-owned (under Smith Broadcasting, then) with WETM and broadcasting all of WETM's programming, Elmira news included, with just a few local ad and community calendar insertions coming from a small sales office/master control on Plaza Drive in Vestal. The branding on the local inserts was "NBC 5," since that's where WBGH showed up on cable, and EVERYONE in the market has cable.

Not long afterward (1997? 1998?), Clear Channel acquired both Smith (WETM/WBGH-CA) and Ackerley (which owned ABC affiliate WIVT 34). The WETM simulcast ended, and WBGH-CA ended up with its own separate lineup of syndicated shows. At news time (6 and 11, anyway), WBGH-CA simulcasts the WIVT newscasts, "NewsChannel 34" branding and all, though with its own separate ad breaks and promos. WBGH-CA moved from 8 to 20 around the same time, making way for WICZ-DT. It's still seen on 5 on cable, and that's where pretty much everyone watches it.

(Confusingly, WICZ also programs a second station in the market: WBPN-LP 10 is the UPN affiliate, and it brands as "UPN8," since that's where it's seen on cable. It's also on 40-2 on WICZ-DT.)

Oh, and Clear Channel also sells the WB 100+ cable outlet in the market, "WBXI" cable 11. Neither "WBXI" nor WBGH-CA is seen on the WIVT-DT subchannels; WBGH makes NBC HD programming available on cable via a direct feed to Time Warner.

It's a weird market...
______________

They only run 40 watts ERP from someplace near the north end of the Colorado River Indian Reservation. There's no way they'd be viewable anywhere in metro Phoenix. Maybe in Lake Havasu City but that's it outside of the Parker/Colorado River I.R. area.

They are still licensed but that doesn't mean they're still on the air.

Re: Binghamton

Does this mean you'll just sit and watch WBNG-TV (CBS) channel 12? :)

Ahh WSHM-LP. The crappiest CBS station on the air.
I HAVE to love how the parent company basically forced this pile of steaming horse ---- onto the cable subs in the Springfield area.
Comcast is getting a fiber feed, so 1/2rd of the audience are getting a picture with color and stereo clean audio. However DirecTV and Charter are picking this up "off air". So the people in Chicopee and those of us with dishes, get to watch very low (in the toilet) chroma levels, an annoying buzz in the audio (both on DirecTV and off air), and mono! A very quick simplified background, Meredith bought W67DF from Trinity, put WSHM-LP on WFSB's digital signal (3.2), put a Digital set top box on the old trinity transmitter, and viola gave Springfield a 1st rate cable access quality (not to be-rate cable access, I know there are some very good ones out there) CBS affiliate. Oh but they do have the Weather vision forecast (from Mississippi, pretending to be local) and a newscast starting up sometime in the next few weeks, months, or years. No one knows. I am just happy I can pick up both WBZ and WPRI via off air antenna... (My neighbors are too!).
(Amazing, you can take a channel 3 'slicer' stereo modulator {ebay item cheap}, a roof top antenna, a set top VCR to receive 4 or 12, and replace crap with a decent out of market CBS).

You can also find a few in Hawaii and (I think!) on Guam too (I know there's an LPTV CBS affiliate on Guam that's on Channel 11 and is sister to KUAM 8, the full power NBC affiliate, but the call escapes me).

Cheers for now :)
______________

Actually KUAM 8 is the full power NBC affiliate (they proudly sport the peacock logo on their website at http://www.kuam.com/ KUAM-LP 20 must be a translator that also carries WB Network programming as well.

KUAM-LP (??) 11 is the CBS affiliate.

Just a point of clarification. :)

Cheers for now :)

And aren't they the local ABC affiliate? Me thinks they are, but isn't sure...

There are only one of each affiliate in Hawaii, and they're based in Honolulu on Oahu. All stations on the other islands are satellites and repeaters of the Honolulu stations.

Re: Ahhh WSHM/67

I see this at work and, you're right, it sucks. I check WFSB-DT (CBS) channel 33 and that picture and sound are great, even when it's just a simulcast of analog channel 3. Once you flip it to 33-2 (a.k.a. 3-2), you see this pile of crap. The sound is OK but the picture looks stretched in a way. As for cable coverage, several cable systems in western Massachusetts (outside of Springfield) still carry the analog channel 3 signal. Merideth, your station is in the Hartford/New Haven market, not the Springfield/Holyoke market. Why can't you live with that and move on? Let channels 22 (NBC) and 40 (ABC) fight with each other. Worry about channels 8 (ABC) and 30 (NBC)!

Their antenna is atop Black Mtn just SE of Parker and off the IR, but you cannot pick up the signal in Parker or even near Black Mtn (that's what I meant; I knew you couldn't get them from Phx). I'm pretty sure they're silent, and I don't know when they last broadcast a signal.

Parker is a strange place.

I consulted the FM at 99.something twenty years ago (also on Black Mountain) and back then the owners of the translators would routinely unplug the FM transmitter when they were up there "doing maintenance". Of course, they were off the air more than they were on back then as well (and no, I refused to retaliate for their actions, although I can't speak for the then-GM of then-KMDX).

Black Mountain was (and probably still is) difficult to access, which is probably why the translator owners liked to cause trouble; I never could understand the animosity from people operating a not-for-profit service.
______________
