Lubbock Ratings

They're comming on the 11th, who's gonna win and who's gonna lose, or will it be the same old Sh!$?

I'll take "SOS" for $300 Alex...

The non-comm numbers won't be out for several more weeks. I'm expecting KTXT-FM to "appear" with something other than goose-eggs this next period.

I think generally for the Lubbock market, overall radio listening will be down but the traditional high-flyers ratings wise will essentially stay the same.

It seems to me that some of the recent spate of format changes discussed on the other thread perhaps came too late for this book. Still, it will be interesting to see how some of the changes shake out with the numbers.

non-comm numbers.... nobody cares except you, but you are at one, so i guess you are have to care. the other 99% will post their thoughts on commercial radio, that is what i started this topic on. hey, kxkt will probably beat the Bear & Stars, but who cares... oh.... you're the ONE.

I know you could care less about non-comms Cspot, but I'll posit my point on the matter one more time since you still don't seem to get it:

If a non-comm station pulls in better ratings than a commercial station what does that mean?

While it is true that KOHM garners better ratings against many stations in town, depending on the daypart and demographics, that's really no big deal.

What I think IS the big deal is that we accomplish those better numbers by focusing on keeping the listeners and donors happy. And my point is, that commercial radio, especially the corporate office, can learn a great deal from this.

So what do they do? Make the advertisers happy then? No, I don't think they can, and even if they could, that wouldn't change the ratings because those particular numbers are supposedly determined by LISTENERS, not advertisers. So should they make their listeners happy then? Yes, they should, but I'm not sure how they really can do that without upsetting the applecart with the advertisers. The usual mantra I hear to make listeners happier is to play LESS commercials- which basically runs counter to that whole "commercial" radio idea for making money.

And actually I don't care about the ratings as much as say the GM over at GAP or the other stations because, as I've tried to tell you before, my revenue stream isn't determined by those numbers. It's nice to know where we rank against the so-called competition, but ratings do not dictate what we do.

I think a good radio PD will study the numbers, research why a competitor did better, then make changes to improve their position in the ratings. Sometimes that means stealing a play from the competitor's playbook, but that's how the game is played. And I'll also add, again, to assume that non-comms aren't your competition is a mistake.

Since you specifically want thoughts on commercial stations, I'll proffer:
KKAM drops like a stone
KFYO probably fares equal or slightly better than last period
KMMX holds steady or improves
KZII probably shows no/little improvement if at all
KRBL drops like a stone
KJDL improves
KTTU slightly improves
KFMX slightly decreases

And everyone else pretty much unchanged...

hey, deeg, i'm bored with your continued rant about non-comms and how "important" they are to commercial radio blah, blah, blah.. you amuse me, but thank you for finally posting ON the Topic.

I honestly think WKRP will make a move upward in this book.

First off...this is the SPRING BOOK...which means that good ol' Double T won't even show up as their current incarnation until the FALL. Heard alot of people on the board wondering "what they will do in the ratings..."

Past that...KKAM and Double T will probably split up the 2 share that sports talk got anyway, so good luck with that.

One will flip or die eventually. This market isn't big enough for 2 sports stations.

Predictions from an out of work dj chick:

KLLL-FM
KFMX-FM up due to KONE's nights going into tank
KMMX-FM
KKCL-FM could be lower, or higher, depending how many of their listeners died
KFYO-AM bump from talk fans who hate the changes on KKAM (Jim Rhome anyone??)
KBTE-FM
KXTQ-FM
KQBR-FM
KSTQ-FM now Double T
KZII-FM
KLZK-FM could be higher...they're doing weird stuff with the playlist so who knows
KONE-FM B&T gonna kill them at night
KEJS-FM
KKAM-AM

Just wondering but does any one that post on here actually work in commercial radio in Lubbock anymore?
If not . . . well it makes you wonder about the market.

that is a rather silly question.

I'll be honest, I don't, but am a college student in Lubbock and have been discussing Lubbock radio with Lubbock radio-info users since 2005. I'll admit I still have a lot to learn but do enjoy talking about Lubbock radio with everyone on here.

Cspot,
I don't think it is a silly question at all.
Seems like there are a lot of people on here that "used to work" somewhere or
tried to work somewhere but I don't get the feeling a lot of current radio employees in Lubbock
post on this board, even undercover. There are obviously a few, but for the most part it looks like
a group of radio fans or ex-jocks. Not that that is bad, just an observation.

My guess is, that most of the employed jocks in Lubbock rarely have time to even look at these boards. With all the lay-offs, the folks who are still employed are doing the work of two maybe three people.

Nope... that's totally right and Terrible Jock is exactly right as well. I honestly don't recall ever being on here when I was working in radio. Yet that all changed for me, unfortunately, last July.

Once again proving people on this board don't have a real idea of whats going on.....Mix down, KissFM great growth, KFMX great Growth, Rebel up a little, KFYO down, 101 up buy could have possibly done a little damage if they DIDN"T have Bob and Tom

By the way...RBL was down .5 and irrelevant, Mix still up from year to year, COOL fell, FYO DID get murdered, FMX down from year to year by nearly 3 shares still, ZII down year to year, Starz might actually have something over there, and the Spanish stations all took a hit. Worst pd's in the world knee jerk from book to book...gotta look long term. Especially in a market size as small and erratic as LBK. Sounds like someone doesn't know "how to read a book."

Biggest surprise is how big of a country surge this book showed. Yes, it's Texas...but both going up, stealing shares from other stations. Spanish stations basically flat and not gaining at all. And things are getting interesting between FMX and ONE...there's more to this fight that I bet shows up in the fall. And what the hell are they doing getting rid of a station that jumped up and is somewhat competitive over at Ramar? Double T better pay off...they just kissed away the biggest book Hot's ever seen. Wow.

DOWN books for BEAT, KOOL, MIX, KFYO, Real Country, KKAM, Ramar's Tejano, Rebel and Ramar's 950 N/T. Stars 97.3 goes from #9 in the market to a tie for #8, and Ramar drops the only thing close to a "winner" they had, for 'Ball Scores', OUCH! FMX, think you will ever see them back in the 8's or 9's again? what happened to KOOL!? Bear is triple L's punching bag, Kid must have stumbled over at Mix, Kiss 102, nice try but you're still below what you had last spring. isn't it time to give up on some Tejano and Hispanic radio stations in Lubbock? where are the numbers for it? Rock 101 is getting closer to FMX, Triple L is bullet proof.
and for the rest... "it sucks to be you".

Well thanks there Nick!

Seeing as I was the ONLY one who proffered ANY predictions before the numbers came out- and I'm the NON-COMM guy.

::)

It's all good though.

I very much enjoy rockchick's assessment and agree with her 100% regarding KTTU. Doesn't look good for GAP either.

Don't worry, I'll chime in with the non-comm numbers once I have them in a few more weeks.

Cspot... have you ever seen Maximizer? Do you know anything but 12+ numbers? if you have or if you did, you would see that KLLL lost half its audience in the afternoon and gave the 25-54 money target up completely. 12-17 and 12-24 adults does not get you buys in this market. Placing top 4 in the money demo's might. You obviously have no clue, and have nothing but spew to offer this board. As long as you are chiming in your drool, those who work and might have something to offer will never respond. God forbid anyone finding out who you really are. Jobless would be your future. and don't expect a response from any further dribe from you. You talk about surface issues that have no substance. Good luck.. it really sucks to be you.

This is my last visit to these boards. There's really nothing to offer here. It's a few people trying to spin information to benefit themselves and when anyone offers concrete facts they are treated with derision. I find the (presumably) lone female on the boards the most embarrassing of all. You may have a past in radio, you may have a present in radio, but you have no future in radio. Goodbye all. Turn up the music!

sounds like someone got their feelings hurt.

and yes..I'm female. I grew up in LBK, dad was a programmer there for years and years...I interned there and now am off doing part time shifts every now and then while I grow the kid.

It'll be okay Nick...it really will. This is what a radio board is supposed to be about.
