Lufkin Nacogdoches Radio Questions

Just curious. How would a New Rock station do in this market?

Well back in the days before CC decided on what we will listen to, Q107 was a direct competitor to KFOX, both of which were rock stations, and Q107 was the better of the two. I think that a rock only station would be great but it will probably try to compete with SFA's rock station (which I can not stand) and that format won't work IMO. If they could mix a little KLOL (prior to current version), KTUX from Shreveport and Kiss 99.5 from San Antonio. But that is what I would want.

My sources say that the new KVLL is an Urban station. With Steve harvey in the morning.

I have this info on good sources.

I think that someone has tried something similar to that format before and it failed miserably.

Well, the Web site was definitely uninformative, and the GM didn't spill the beans to the LDN... A name like Sunny implies an A/C format.

If, however, Steve Harvey will be on mornings, then the likely scenario is an R&B station in the same vein as KISX-Whitehouse, Tyler-Longview. If that is the case, then the format can work with proper programming and a dedicated sales staff.

Urban's downfall in Lufkin Nacogdoches in previous years, IMO, is the over-reliance on hip-hop and rap. Keep the playlist R&B, no hip hop, and present the product in a mature manner, you'll have a station that serves an unserved demographic, while remaining sellable.

I have heard talk within the GAP building that a hispanic oldies format will take on rival KSML (Yates). I have heard through the grapevine that the GM (For GAP) has spoken to key sellers at Super Mix. Possibly a La Preciosa?

I heard from a very credible source that this signal is going to be used by GAP as a pilot signal for testing out the new format called "Hit Country", which feature an eclectic blend of Country and Hot AC, geared towards 24-54 females. It combines the best of both worlds from the farm to the inner city, bringing together artists such as George Strait and Alanis Morisette in a unique playlist that will keep listeners wondering what's coming next.

Did KYKS not try that in the mid 80's? Might be time to go back to something like that..but I still think the Spanish format is a "sure thing"

That sounds exactly like what KYKS was doing in the 80s. There's no such thing as a new idea. Sooner or later everything comes around again.

I think someone earlier mentioned that the new format would be Scott Shannon's Oldies. If I were you,,I'd bet on this. Urban has been tried,,and failed. They had tons of listeners, but no advertisers would touch it. A "true" rock format would fail for lack of enough listeners in a sellable demo, and lack of advertisers. Same problem with the "KLOL mix" of old and new. A "true" A/C would work well I think, and maybe a "Classic Hits" format. As for the SFA issue,,plenty of advertisers target the college crowd, but as stated before targetting the students with a particular format would be certain death. The majority of students are only in Nac. for a portion of the year,,and they aren't residents. Specifically targetting SFA=Death,,Not targetting SFA=Nothing,,,no downside.

Steve,

If I were a betting man, I think they will go with 24 hour barnyard sounds. Inspired by the fish tank TV channel. Really shoot for the rural audience. ;)

Lufkin-Nacogdoches
Now that the ratings are out, KYKS is gaining impressive numbers as KJCS is declinng. KAFX is another winner and the other losers are... KYBI with a small loss but the biggest loser is KTBQ..OUCH!
BTW: The overal market is now #253 (instead of #252) losing about 1,400 listners.

That would really hurt KJCS.

UPDATE: I heard that the station, being a blend of Country and Hot AC will be called HotMix 94.7.
