Lumberyard Interloper

There's something so quirky about KAZG that keeps Nurse Jeff and me coming back to the Mighty 14~Forty! Is it because of their self supported, paint peeled tower sandwiched between a lumberyard and the Crosscut Canal? How 'bout those "yank the plug" signoffs with no mention of call letters, city of license, or when they'll return to the air? Maybe it's because they're the last daytimer left in Phoenix, even though they can journey into the night with a blazing 52 watts of music pow-pow-power? But today the Nurse and I heard another reason to listen to Lumberyard 14~Forty. Around 5:40p on Tuesday (a good five minutes ahead of local sunset) KAZG was off the air and we heard commercials on the frequency. Turns out it was KINF in Santa Maria, CA, some 600+ miles away, blastin' in with their 5kw non directional signal. Thanks to IBOC, we haven't been able to DX in the Gremlin the past couple of years. Guess KSUN 14~Hundred & KPHX 14~Eighty aren't runnin' with that piece of crap. The gods of skywave were with us as we drove down Thomas Road with visions of the Lumberyard firing up that 52 watts and letting it rip after dark! What this market needs is 24 hours of fourteen in a row from 14~Forty!

Reminds me of a station I heard while driving through Kingman a few years ago.
Then again, that was Kingman, not a metro with nearly three-million people.

KAAA, the Big 1230?

Well, not exactly the "Big" 1230...but have you ever heard
a class IV refer to itself as the "miniscule" 1230 (or 1240,
1340, etc.)?

I suppose one exception may have been KRIZ 1230 back in
the pre-megalopolis '60s and '70s. We've had a number of
anectodal recollections here on R-I that KRIZ got everything
it could (and then some) out of the 1000/250 radiating from
the stick at 2345 West Buckeye Road.

Close... KOMY in the Monterey Bay (komyradio.com, I think) advertises "one million milliwatts of power" on their 1340.

Just butting in - KAZG plays a great lineup of oldies - if you are hardcore oldies lover - AZ Gold kicks butt on KOOL, AM signal sounds good with good daytime coverage from way up I-17 to past Picahco Peak on I-10. That's a lotta miles diggin' the gold mine.

Nice tight presentation as well.

So they've got one listener at least - dat be me.

Five, if you include OldiesFan, Legend City, Nurse Jeff and me. Our hunch is this station would be a) doin' somethin' other than oldies and b) running 24/7 if it wasn't owned by Gumpdusky. Why they hang on to it is as much a mystery as why the Guv saddled up with Obama!

IF komy is the old KMBY. Their tower sits at the end of Cannery Row in the bay. Salt water ground is the best, period
