M.R.S. Ventures

Well... I hate to see it happen, but I can't say I'm really surprised. I just noticed on the FCC CDBS that 11 of the M.R.S. Ventures stations have had the licenses cancelled. That should make some room for a few upgrades...

Why did you hate to see it happen? I get the impression that MRS Ventures was a festering boil on the radio landscape. The stations are all off the air and they wouldn't sell the properties for a reasonable amount, so the only choice left was to revoke the licenses.

I don't think revoking the licenses automatically deletes these channels. I believe that the Commission will eventually auction them off...more $$ that way. Anyone disagree?

You're right: the channels are not deleted.

In both cases, a filing window will be opened, during which applications for these frequencies will be accepted. (possibly along with applications for other, unrelated, channels)

Assuming two or more mutually-exclusive applications are filed for any given frequency, there will be an auction. (I think it's a reasonable assumption there will be multiple applications for the Pine Bluff FM frequencies. It's very likely for the other FMs. Not so sure about the AM channels.

It may take some time. Three licenses in Indiana were revoked in 2001 when the licensee was convicted of serious felonies in a state court. Those frequencies are still silent; just a few weeks ago, the FCC issued a permit for a new licensee to use one of these channels. (I'd have to do some digging but I don't think either of the other two frequencies has been awarded to a new permittee yet)

Let me clarify... I'm sorry that perfectly good stations were run into the ground and Jerry Russell didn't do a thing about it. No sympathy for MRS Ventures - apparently they took lessons from the good Bishop Willis.

You may be right J. Boyd. I do recall WPRN-AM in Butler, Al. turning in their license and a co-channel station in La. was able to upgrade. That may have been possible because WPRN-AM was a daytimer and the FCC isn't authorizing any more daytimers... or it could have been that the license was voluntarily surrendered. Either way, it will probably be a while before those frequencies return to the air.

Gentlemen: I normally keep my posts brief...but here I would beg your indulgence:
In the early 60's there were hundreds of available FM frequencies. All one had to do was read and understand part 73 of the FCC rules, get the correct forms and fill them out according to the rules. There was no filing fee...no auctions...no EEO...No FAA (mostly)
and seldom a competing application. Those were the days. They (FCC) basically stayed out of the contentious process we now see. That is why we have the viable FM band today.
What Happened? When the Feds started collecting fees, the availibilty of the frequencies
began to migrate to the "biggies". What do we have today? End of sermon and your comments are appreciated...Tnx JBI
