magic 102.1

when magic 102.1 was called q102.in houston? was it a rap station or and rb station im just really curious back in 1994 . or befere they changed it to magic 102.1 in houston

How about he's in the wrong market? Q 102 was a D/FW radio station at 102.1 under the calls KTXQ. It was a rock station. Now billed as 102.1 The Edge, still a rock station only it's alternative as opposed to active.

Our Majic 102, has been around for about 30 years, minus the referenced 102 Jamz that appears above. That occurred during, I believe, Clear Channel's ownership of the station.

"Majic 102" became "102 Jamz" in 1990 or 1991. "97.9 The Boxx" launched in 1991 not as an urban, but a dance heavy CHR/Rhythmic but quickly phased the dance product out. I believe it directly competed with both KMJQ and KHYS and indirectly with KKBQ-FM and KRBE. When KBXX and KMJQ became sister stations, KMJQ flipped to Urban AC as "Majic 102". I think the only "Q"'s Houston's ever had have been at 92.9 FM and 790 AM. Does that sound right?

KQUE-FM, 102.9
DOB: 10/1/1960
DOD: ????

Does anyone know when K-Q effervesced for the last time, drifting off to that great format graveyard in the sky? Early 90s was it?

1997. Call letters were officially switched on May 23 although I think the format change occurred slightly ahead of that.

maybe this person told me wrong that what somebody told me there was a q102.1 or maybe I heard wrong because I was so young but this is a good station too just forget when I said q 102.1 because I could be miss herring things

I forgot about that FCC database that was just mentioned; shoulda looked it up myself. Thanks, jd.

It did, I believe The Planet ran a few weeks before the calls were changed to KKPN. Those calls are now in Corpus Christi.

KLYX 1977 flipped to Urban Contemporary Majic 102 (1990), Majic 102Jamz (1991) 102Jamz (1992-1994)
1995- Majic 102 "The Majic is back" as a Urban Adult Contemporary around the same time y98.5 flipped to Smooth Jazz.

Yes Majic102Jamz and 102Jamz played rap in heavy rotation. See my aircheck on youtube search KMJQ Aircheck.

KMJQ was owned by Evergreen Communications. Clear Channel bought them after the 1996 Telecom Act along with KHYS, KBXX, and KJOJ. KBXX bought KMJQ in 1995 due to FCC regulations you could not own more than one radio station that has the same format unless it is a simulcast due to Anti Trust Laws a ruling made in 1993.

There was also KYOK AM1590 Yo 1590 Raps (1991-1992) which was all Rap. Before that, that station was an R&B station.
Are you thinking about that station?

In March of 1991 KHYS "Kiss 98.5" Urban/Dance flipped back to Urban AC "Y" 98.5 The Y is back playing the best variety of hits and dusties. KFMK-98 Hybrid AC/Oldies format flipped to The Box and picked up the KHYS format as a Contemporary Crossover (Urban Contemporary crossing over to Rythmic Top 40) the dance lean was a stunt to bring the old KHYS listeners to that station and not to KMJQ. KHYS Kiss 98.5 and the Box didn't coexist until it's reincarnation in 1997 as Dance CHR. I still remember their slogan "Your official Bobby Brown Station" they did back in 1990.
