Agreed. CHR in its various incarnations is dead or dying in most places.

They were grandfathered in with those stations. The ownership rules have been modified and if Cumulus goes private; they will have to adhere to the current set of rules. Therefore; they will have to part with one FM. Same thing that was mentioned about CC putting stations in the Aloha Trust as they are going private.

...And to me (at least) WTYB seems to be the right station to throw.

Even though it has decent ratings, it's the youngest format in their FM cluster, it's signal is not that powerful (compared to the other FM's), and I would bet it bills about the same as a lower rated station like Z-102.

Another possibility is that when (or if) WTYB gets sold, they might move Magic to the 102.1 stick and jettison Z-102.

YES

Yes what? Toss aside Z102 in favor of.....Magic 102.1?

Who knows... but if you're in radio you should always be prepared. Stranger things have happened. Look at RadioNow in Indy. And they were a top ranked CHR... and the only one in the market. Granted, they got relaunched days later, but without the staff.

Color me confused. What makes you say that? I can name more than a few CHR outlets with ratings that would seem to indicate otherwise...

Do you really think Cumulus/Stratus will sell Magic 103.9? Wouldn't it just be easier to operate under the 'trust' status and continue on unchanged? And then again, will the price be right to get rid of it?

I say that in with reference to the fact that CHR does not bill well in most markets. Ratings are one aspect of the whole picture; billing is the money maker.

I can agree with you on this. CHR usually skews in this day in age to the much younger crowds (under 18's). Of course, this is a generalization, but once you get out of high school, people are almost always polarized to country, rock, or rap. You might get a little mix of them (esp. the last two) but not to the degree of most CHRs.

So, even if a station gets a 20+ share in the under 18 crowd, they don't have a ton of money to spend on cars, bars/clubs, or house stuff (all of which probably accounts for a good portion of your radio ads). So, even if a CHR has a 5 share overall, they might be billing just as well as a rock station with a 3 share. Now this isn't saying CHR is dead, it's just saying 2-3 CHR's can't survive in a town like they did in the 70's-80's...esp if that town is market #100-something.

When it's all said and done, though, I'd take a 10 share 19-24 over a 20 share 12-18. It's just more marketable.

Cumulus is strapped for cash. I can envision them having somewhat of a "fire sale" on the stations in the trust just to raise cash.
