MAGIC 106.7 [and AC Format] (SINCE WHEN?)

Since when does AC radio consider "Living On a Prayer" by Bon Jovie, and "Addictive To Love" By Robert Palmer AC music?
Those two songs are LOUD Rock and Roll music
Not everyone likes Rock and Roll music. Trust me, I don't!! My coworkers who I work with, they don't like that music either. Our company has on Magic 106.7, that's the only station the company has on, that comes through a Speaker. When each major office puts on that speaker, Magic 106.7 is on there. There's a tiny Media Room in the hospital that has a Stereo System. That's where they have on Magic 106.7. Most of the hospital employees where I work is (Besides Americans) most are Hatians 70%, Vietnamese15%, and Spanish 3%
One of my coworkers, she is a 65 Year old African American women. She likes the song "Hey Soul Sister" and "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. Another women is about 52 years old. She mostly like Urban AC music. In the morning I work with two 67 year old ladies, they seem to like the older stuff (Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Reggae music.
My overnight coworkers are African Americans, as well as three other African American ladies who work on weekends, one is young about 30 years old, she like all type of music Rock, HOT AC, and Hip Hop.
My point being is if Magic 106.7 start playing LOUD Rock and Roll music, they will very fast lose their listenners.
There are a lot of great New, and Recent soft music out there.
I'd rather hear New Soft Country music than hearing LOUD Rock and Roll
For a station like Magic 106.7 playing those two Loud Rock and Roll music, that's a big mistake. Bon Jovie has some nice ballards that Magic could play such as "Bed Of Roses", or "Who Says You can't Go Back"
They could play Freddie Jackson, or Alicia Keys new song "Speechless", or Raphael Saadiq New song "Goodman"
Magic 106.7 has to step it up a bit, don't be scared, try something new!!! Freddie Jackson, they've always played his music in the past "You are My Lady" Why not play his latest "I Don't Want To Go" It's a nice slow jam

I also heard both "Living On A Prayer" and "Addictive To Love" on a few other AC stations. They're going to lose their listenners if they keep playing these type of songs

Just looking at the last 106 songs played:

Neon Trees - Animal
Taio Cruz - Break Your Heart
Bruno Mars - Grenade

Those are the real oddballs that Magic plays; though considering Kiss' strong numbers, you can't really blame Magic for throwing them in. Does the Magic Lyric Guarantee still exist? Because I'm pretty sure Grenade would fail: "Throw my hand on a blade for you... Take a bullet straight through my brain."

I've also noticed that Magic has begun playing that 90s remake of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Nicki French. I was really surprised to hear it on there, as I have not heard her version in ages. I remember it was really popular when it first came out in 1995, but then it kind of faded and all I ever heard was Bonnie Tyler's original. I went on Yes.com and it looks like several AC stations (including 106.7 Lite FM in NYC) have been playing the remake as well. I have to say I like the remake better in some ways. I've also noticed some AC stations playing "What is Love" by Haddaway.

They probably have their own custom edit of the song with that taken out. Another odd song they're now playing, Katy Perry - California Gurls, has the "sex on the beach" part edited out.

That's a bit weird right there. Lite 100.5 WRCH in Hartford plays "California Gurls" and the only part that's edited out is Snoop Dogg's part. WRCH also has "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz in their playlist. Another recently added song to the WRCH playlist is "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock.

I brought this up over a year ago here, and got flammed for it. Looks like I am not the only one who is questioning WMJX's so-called "Soft Rock!"

Adult Contemporary changes. Hence the "contemporary" in Adult Contemporary. If you think there's just come dude who works at Magic throwing in these songs because he likes them, you're way off. Magic in particular is an incredibly tight, focused, and well-researched station. Hundreds of thousands of dollars go into research each year showing that the core AC demo would rather hear these songs than Michael Freakin' Bolton.

Again: Adult Contemporary should change routinely.

A final note: Livin' On A Prayer and Addicted to Love have been AC songs for a number of years now. This is not breaking news.

In summation: Move along, nothing to see here.

I know somebody won't like this comment but you can get all soft AC songs on WODS 103.3 HD2 it's called "The Cove" Soft Love Songs. No commercials.
Check out the web site.

I've heard of "The Cove" @Jimmy128, I also listened a few times. It's a great station. I wish it was on a real radio station here in Boston because I don't have a computer at home nor an HD Radio.
I did have two HD Radios in the past, both times, most times the HD2 stations didn't work most days.

Off the subject reply for a second. We all have rights to speak our thoughts here, as long as it don't offend anyone. Yes, I keep going on with my ideas, because no one ever listens to me and so far, I've heard no change.
Not everyone likes Rock and Roll Music!!!! @Program Management Personal, besides using your research statistics, go out and talk face to face with the real listenners. As I said in the begginning, here at this hospital where I work weekdays. Magic 106.7 is the only station the Hospital Management Personal allow us to have on throughout the hospital. Most employees of this hospital, besides American, 70% are Hatians and African Americans, and let me tell you, a lot of them do not like Rock and Roll music. Besides using your research statistics, go out and talk to the real listenner.

That's what research is... listener outreach. These aren't magical people who exist only to fill research panels. People on these panels are actual listeners, people in the demo, in the region. The nature of broadcasting is to be just that: broad. When you're working with limited spectrum, you have to try to entertain and inform large groups. That's why you haer things you like, and things you don't like.

Magic 106.7 does a solid job of entertaining large groups without insulting or alienating.

Magic and similar stations evolve. When an artist like Bon Jovi makes a comeback, it has universal appeal among old farts like me who liked harder stuff in their youth and teens who love their stuff. Hence, greater numbers being entertained. ODS has evolved. Back in 1993, I remember they had Motown Mondays and Fifties Fridays. As the years have shifted to 1965-1989 on that station, disco and harder rock have become part of the mix. Interestingly, KISS and the Top 40 stations play a very small percentage of hard rock. Dominant new popular music seems to be r&b, hip hop, soft-to-midtempo rock, power ballads and pop-infused country. When I hear the kids play KISS,I feel like I'm in an 80's time warp! Watch American Idol sometime and see what songs the kids are choosing.

I don't think they're bad. I'm just surprised that they are starting to play (Loud) Rock and Roll music.
Magic 106.7 is ok. They could be better if they played more New Urban AC (at least) Freddie Jackson, and Charlie Wilson. I'm not saying play it all day, I'm not saying change their format. I'm just saying it'd be nice to hear some more NEW Urban AC on there. Raphael Saadiq has a nice new song "Good Man" and Kirk Franklyn has one "I Smile" I'm not saying play these songs 24/7.
The most station I hear during the week is Magic 106.7 (Not by choice) 90%, the rest is either WEEI or Mix 104.1

Unfortunately, this format is evolving. And some AC stations are dropping 70s titles to focus on recent hits.

I would not be surprised if Magic starts adding rap artists to their playlist. That will alienate most of their listening audience.

Rap is polarizing among teens and twenties. I doubt it will ever appear on a mainstream AC station.

Magic's "harder" tracks are probably costing the station some of its 55+ listeners, but chances WMJX management doesn't care if they lose them or not, especially if the new "edgier" AC sound maintains Magic's high 12+ ratings while strengthening its appeal to listeners at the lower end of the 25-54 demographic range -- the people Madison Avenue most wants to reach.

Magic has never been my favorite AC station. I noticed your posts about WRCH and it seems like they've evolved a bit, too, but I know they still play a lot of the softer AC songs from the 80s (such as Jack Wagner's "All I Need,") especially on their locally produced nighttime show called "Pillow Talk."

What about WPLM/Easy 99.1? Last year, their playlist was almost identical to Magic, but I have to say they've done a very good job tweaking their playlist. They play lots of soft rock and roll from the 70s and 80s, and sometimes even the 60s. I have heard certain songs on there that have been completely forgotten (such as Martin Page's "In the House of Stone and Light.") That was a song that I remember was on constantly when it first came out in 1995, but it's rarely heard these days.

If you live anywhere near the Cape, try Ocean 104.7. Now THAT is one of the best AC stations I have ever heard. It seems like they play just about anything that falls into the AC category. From 50s rock and roll to some of the slightest country crossovers. I can't get them where I live on a regular basis, but I can occasionally when the tropo conditions are good, and if I can get it, I never change it.
