Magic 98.1 Mornings

I have to say I was skeptical at first when I heard the two women together on Magic 98.1. I thought-oh boy, another female show trying that old babe thing again like with that Pam and Heather. But, after listening, I am hooked because they talk about their real relationships, not some drummed up souped up fake one that somebody scripted. Real things happening in the real world the way it really happens. Wonder how long these 2 will last?? Can anyone tell me if they are sisters? They sound a lot alike.

That's Joe Pedicino's wife,Bonnie, along with Heather.(Joe and Bonnie hosted wrestling on TBS for years. Joe is now GM of the Newnan/Lagrange stations.)
I have always wondered why Joe didn't use Bonnie on the air more.....or why it isn't Bonnie AND Joe doing mornings!(Keep Heather too!!)

And what, in your opinion, constitutes "good" radio??
Name the morning show, in the Atlanta market, that is better!

Thanks for the info and answering my question taylorengineer. I agree. They could have some interesting bits if they include him. I like these ladies. They are funny. I heard a guy on once. I think it might have been Heather's husband because his name was not Joe. It was an R name. And they were great jabbing each other. It reminded me of my wife. Reality radio! A lot of fun!
Some people are quick to jump on 98.1 FM. Glad to see you are not.
I do not understand why OTHER people think they can do better. OR is it they can't so they take a jab and run?

Good day to ya all. D.J. here once again... as if you couldn't tell. Heather and Bonnie are truly amazing together. These two play off each other all day every day on and off the air. The R name you mentioned. Yes, this is Heather's Husband Rich. Now known around the station as Road Rage Rich because of his extensive knowledge in NASCAR. You can find him dipping in and out on both "The Curt Snider Show" from 10a to 12p as well as "85 South on the Road, with Chris East and Jackie Steele" from 3p to 6p Monday through Friday. These show's both run on 720 the Voice. Rich helps me out from time to time as well on "The Trading Post" weekdays from 12:20p to 1p on AM 1400 Coweta Counties Classic Country. Thanks for all of your support. I'll be sure Heather and Bonnie both read this thread and possibly put up their own reply's.

I understand that tastes vary, but I don't understand how anyone could say Magic is bad radio. Someone in another thread had mentioned how much time, and thought goes into their music mix, and I agree. I really enjoy it. I do wish their there production values were better ( personal taste), and their signal was a little stronger. I have a hard time getting it in Fayetteville where I live sometimes. But over all I think Joe, and the gang have done a good job!<P ID="signature">______________

Okay, here's my point (and remember we're all entitled to our opinions, except everytime someone wants to disagree we get all testy about it). The music is fine. I discovered Magic about 5 years ago and love the music. But the announcers (and yes the production) is lame. In the few years I've lisetened theyve gone through about a dozen different djs at least. Whats the deal? And now the GMs wife? What happens if she doesn't work out? That seems like a bad business decision to me. We can all agree that the music rocks, but I guess we'll have to disagree about the quality of air talent. I'd still like to know why they can't keep anyone there more than a couple of months.

Your right Philo. Coming from a major market I think that the air talent, and production values could be better. But then again I remember when I got started in a small market station , and my air checks from that time make me make me cringe. The announcers can only get better. As far as keeping talent, I think Joe himself explained it well. Radio as a rule is a nomad existense. You don't make much money starting in the smaller markets, so you move on to move up so to speak. Hard to find A list talent that wants to stay in a small market. But it can be done. Hell, give me a call Joe! I'll work for ya!

See there. i didn't get testy once!

I am going to copy an answer I gave to someone on the Ga. board recently who said he had been offered the AMD job on Magic 98.1 but turned it down. He had comments about the turnover so I explained to him why we had turnover. I think it will answer your question too.

His comment was: (speaking about Magic 98.1)

> > Ugh...there's a sinking ship for you....would you believe
> I was offered a job on the morning show there nearly a year
> ago and since then, the morning show has changed about FOUR
> times in just a year!?? Sadness....Oh well, what can you
> expect? Needless to say I ran far from that job!

Here was what I said:

That's funny.... I don't rememeber offering AMD to anyone that turned it down! Maybe you could refresh my memory... after all I am getting old and senile! BTW.. if you really are in the business you know that small market stations have a lot of turnover because if someone is good they get a chance to move up to a bigger market. We get lucky sometimes and get a good person that WANTS to live in a small town so they stay. But a lot of the time a person works at a station like ours so they can get noticed and move up. JB Stevens just left us to go to work for CC's Total Traffic in Atlanta. Pamela got a job in her hometown in up state NY near her family. Dakota is working in Augusta at one of the strong fms there. etc. etc. etc. We have been extremely fortunate in that we have some very good on air people that want to live and work in our small town. People like Uncle Rich, Benji, Heather, Chris East, Jackie Steele, Shawn Cleaves, and James Williams are among the best small market on air people you will find in markets our size... they could all get jobs in bigger markets if they chose to, but they like it here and thank God they want to stay.
BTW... based on the attitude you show here... thank you for running from the job. Yes, sometimes we make a mistake and hire a bad apple... sometimes we get lucky and they turn down the job.
joe

Now to continue....

As far as production values... yes, we are small market and most of the commercials we do are for smaller mom and pop businesses...so the message may not be as soficticated as in a major market, but our production is, in my opinion, superior to most small markets. We have a small number of people to contribute so you hear the same voices more than I would like, which is why we use some of the other CC stations around the area to help us do some of the commercials. We will never sound as good as markets like Atlanta or even Columbus where they have complete production departments, but for a small market I think we do great.

As far as my wife.... she has done TV and Radio for years... most of them with me. For several years I have held off on hiring her because she was my wife... then after she helped me fill in for our morning team for a few days two things became clear... she was good at it and she likes doing it. I decided it was time to let her do it. She and Heather get along great, sound great, and relate to the audience we have listening in Mid West Ga. Those who know me know that I have wanted two women in the AM for over a year. They also know one more thing. What happens if she doesn't work out? Same as anyone else.

One last thing.... When you compare people that work at a small market station to those that work in Atlanta... please remember that the ones in the major market have usually been in the business LOTS longer than ours... make LOTS more money than ours, and most of all wanted to work in a major market so they honed their skills to a major market where our people honed theirs skills to be part of a small community, fit in a small market, and work in a small market - not a major one. I would take the people that have been with me for years and put them against other SMALL MARKET radio on air people any day of the week. Most of them could be in bigger markets if they wanted to learn the trade and make the move.

Sorry I was so long... but some things just have to be explained. Not fair to blame the people when they are doing what I want them to and what they want to.

No, I appreciate the lengthy and well-explained response. That makes sense to me and I agree with MOST of what you said except there are still a few announcers there that make me cringe. I think people like Uncle Rich and Benji sound very good for the market size, though.
I think one thing that Magic needs to do, and I don't have an answer as to how to do it, would be to let the listeners know WHY a jock is gone, as long as it isn't due to a negative reason, otherwise the listeners, like me, will begin to wonder what on earth is happening there. Just go ahead and TELL 'EM "Hey, we hate to say goodbye to JB, but congrats on his new gig in Atlanta" and then at least the mysteries surrounding the revolving door won't seem so ominous.

You know, I have never been able to decide about that. Do you point out how often people move on by bringing it up or just move on with the new person and let it slide? I guess I also think that if you tell them on the ones that ended good then they will figure out when you don't tell them and then want to know "what did he/she do wrong?" I don't know... maybe one day I'll figure it out!. Thanks for understanding.

LoL... sorry

Hopefully you get it by now. I'm a "newcomer" to this site and not that up on radio markets and I got it.
I'm still wondering why some people think they know best??
I guess opinions are like a**es...everybody has one.
You're just showing yours in front of everyone.
