magic 989 now jack fm and joy 106.3 now magic 106.3

Adult Hits which competes directly with 103.5 and 106.7.

This is going to have to create a chain reaction. We maybe in store for some more flips and that's not a bad thing.

Agree with all, although this definitely can have an effect on 105.7 and 96.3, too -- and even the new 93.3.

Doesn't fit that Radio One would do this with a top 6 station that covers the city, but hat's off to them for doing it. Rewind 1035 / 1043 has the most too lose. I like the rock edge better than the pop of Rewind. We need a few days to see how deep the songs go. Right now I'm Jacked!

I could see 103.5/104.3 going to some kind of "Jamming Oldies". That would make the most sense.

part from All Access, "Moving WXMG from 98.9 to 106.3 allows us to continue providing great music to our loyal urban adult contemporary listeners. WXMG will continue to be anchored by the TOM JOYNER Morning Show. With the addition of JACK FM to our portfolio, RADIO ONE/COLUMBUS will ultimately deliver more value to the diverse communities that make CENTRAL OHIO a vibrant region."

columbus radio just became even more lame. yeah, jack fm ... see how well the format has done across the country and even here in columbus. stupid.

I'm just hoping this pisses CC, Wilks, NABCO or Saga off to the point that we finally get a CHR/Rhythmic in Columbus.

This is not the last format change we will see this year. Columbus is now over saturated with this kind of music. Some other Columbus stations are bound to make major changes to their format. Not saying this will cause a chain reaction but who knows
in this town.

It did flunk out in some markets, especially where they just jumped on the bandwagon and plunked it down without proper care or support.  But it's still doing extremely well in other markets.  Seems to be very dependent on the market (including competition), execution, signal and advertising, etc.  Based just on early listening the new format on 98.9 seems to have a lot in common with CC's the Lake in Cleveland, which has been doing extremely well.  The Lake still very high but drifting down a tad 6+ -- which is typical for something that starts with a huge splash.  Also I'd guess the Lake's in-demo ratings are still killer.  That's something we really need to keep in mind when we're looking just t the "beauty contest" 6+ numbers.  Namely that even when they look just so-so and declining the station could still be dominating the demos that drive sales.  Even if we later see that the 6+'s for 98.9 aren't looking stellar, digging into the demo breakouts could show them doing very well and meeting their goals.  Can't emphasize that enough.

A lot of the consistently successful Jacks have high-profile morning shows (e.g., KFMB in San Diego), even in the PPM era.  Will be interesting to see what 98.9 does on that count.

NABCO?  That will happen when Hal freezes over. ;D

I've lost count of the number of stations where you can hear Bon Jovi (haven't heard them yet on 98.9, but I presumably will). Of course when you've got so many Columbus wannabee stations, what do you expect? (Definitely NOT counting 98.9 as a wannabee, BTW. Nothing broadcasting from the Dispatch tower falls into that category.)

By the looks of the playlist, it is the Jack version via satellite. I think any station that has Jack (markets 50 and above) are required to carry the satellite version.

Remember when 98.9 itself was Jammin Oldies for a year or so back in the early 2000's?  About a year ago (or more) Radio One moved full-power WMOJ in Cincy from Urban AC to Jammin Oldies, which is what the format the station was doing (successfully) when Radio One bought it several years earlier.  Interesting how some stations are moving back to that format recently, especially in the West.

Columbus isn't 50 or above, even though most of the country seems to think it is. It's #35, which is actually UP 2 or 3 notches from before. If they are doing the satellite version, maybe this is largely a cost-cutting move.

This will have to kill off Rewind for the most part on signal alone. It will definitely hurt 105.7, and possibly 106.7. I too wonder if The Lake's success in Cleveland had something to do with this. Should be an interesting end to 2011.

Just checked and Jack-FM WQJK Knoxville is NOT playing the same music as 98.9. So that would seem to confirm that Columbus is not on satellite.

Yeah, hard to believe that a few weeks ago the board had been on life-support for months. By Columbus standards these are big changes. I also have all these thoughts swirling around like perhaps Radio One got wind of a move by WTVN to simulcast on 105.7 (or 106.7)? Or maybe they were planning on doing Oldies but got pre-empted by 93.3? Etc...

Re the Rewind prediction... I suppose it's possible. OTOH, Rewind is at least 50% rhythmic. While there's a lot of overlap, it has a very different feel from the new Jack. As I've said many times, Saga really shot itself in the foot by never managing to wrangle at least one more good signal in Columbus besides WSNY. I know that's hard to do when there are so few, but it would have been worth the investment. That's why one of my first thoughts is that they were somehow involved in the new station...but probably not.
