magic 989 now jack fm and joy 106.3 now magic 106.3

LOL, this flip really caught us off guard. Very interesting.

Actually what is Radio-One thinking? Magic 98.9 was doing very good in the ratings and 106.3 has a horrible signal. I'm actually surprised by this.

I'm kinda shocked myself... 98.9 has been doing very well at 98.9 compaired to even Power 107.5.. heck Magic at 98.9's AQH is 6.4 that's WAY ABOVE WCKX's... WHY move such a performing signal to the rimshot at 106.3 (I see the point in dumping joy's low rated format) .. just don't see why move such a successful format to such a weak signal...

MY GUESS... Radio One feels threatened by both WNCI and the new format at WLZT (though I consider 93.3 more "oldies" than "Classic Hits"...) so putting a Classic Hits format on 98.9 might be their attempt to throw a few rocks at Clear Channel? Look at the damage WNCI has done to WCKX over the years in ratings... exp after PPMs arrived.

Maybe for some reason the Urban AC just wasn't selling despite the ratings? Also, I wonder if this foreshadows any changes at Power, e.g., skewing older?

There has to be something behind this because you just don't blow up a top 5 station the way they just did. I would have to imagine that R1 just pissed off a HUGE chunk of their loyal listeners. They can't be happy with Magic on 106.3.

Somethin' crazy is goin on for sure.. I never ever expected to see these two format changes! ... Crazy season for format changes in Columbus.. First 93.3 (who we all thought we never would see change) .. now these two... what's next?

Also odd:  I believe this may be the only R1 station without an urban or (to a smaller extent) CHR component.  Even their talk stations are urban talk.  And while Mojo in Cincy is targeted to a broad audience with Jammin Oldies, they're still primarily black artists.  R1 positions themselves as the "Urban Media Specialist," and even has Urban  cable TV network TV One.

This all makes me recall the Ted Williams discovery video, when he said something like this to the Dispatch reporter:  "If you're listening to the best oldies, you're listening to Magic 98.9!"

That's so funny Roo because I did the same thing and looked over every market in their portfolio and besides a CHR in Indy, I noticed the same thing.

columbus radio just became even more lame. yeah, jack fm ... see how well the format has done across the country and even here in columbus. stupid.

Here in Dallas, Jack does VERY well. Surprising well with women. It's currently the top Rock station in town. Should take take off quickly and settle back into a top 5 to 7 rank. RKZ and QFM will have their hands full with this one. Nice to see some shake up in Cowtown.

Could we see R1 exit Columbus? I know they haven't done well $$$ wise overall as a company I wonder if they could be considering divesting .. thus the change to a more diverse format selection.

PPM loves Classic Hits..simple as that. Columbus was probably one of the biggest markets without a Classic Hits station. CC and Radio One probably caught wind of each other's moves and rushed to get them on. I still am wondering how all this ties into the programming shuffle at NCI/COL/LZT. Somehow it ties together.

Enjoy the new stations guys...they will shake up the PPM for sure.

I predict that before the year is over, both CD102.5 and 104.9 the River will switch to either an oldies, classic hits, or classic rock format. Everyone wants to be #1, and by playing what we all know is Columbus' favorite music, all of the stations that utilize one of these formats will be #1; it'll be a big 10-way tie for first.

hahaha 104.9 Switch to Classic Hits or Rock??? Seriously .... and at that time WCRS will STOP saying their community local radio...when they program "pacifica" syndicated programming(which means their no more local than Clear Channel's rack of Nexgen machines spewing out voicetracked shows oh wait -- Clear Channel Columbus at least Voicetracks mostly locally) yeah pigs will start flying too!.... I coud see CD102.5 change if WHIZ Group ever decides to stop LMAing it to the alternative station' but I don't see River going to a mainstream format unless sold... and I doub't their sellin' it anytime soon! (and if they did to anyone.. I would see it being EMF)...

Ofcourse maybe we'll get lucky and WCRS will go Country .. we all know Columbus needs another one of those ;)

I listened to JACK FM for about a half hour.. I have to say over all not bad.. Still feels kinda weird hearing "Green Day" coming out of the "Urban Media Owned" radio station...

I had been theorizing along the same lines, given the proximity of the flips. Wonder if 98.9 might have gone Oldies-type Classic Hits had 93.3 not beat them to it?

This is also interesting in light of how the 2010 flips of 106.7 to Gen-X and 103.5 to Rewind likewise happened within weeks of each other. Of course there we were taking about less viable signals.

More conjecture:  Does R1's surprise move anticipate a possible WTVN simulcast coming to 106.7?  There's a fair amount of 106.7 overlap with what we're hearing so far on Jack:  Green Day, Coldplay, Divinyls, Spin Doctors, Tom Cochrane, etc....not to mention much of the late 80's that 106.7 plays.

Jack might be good but it just weird hearing Rock music on 98.9FM. That will take me a while for sure to get used to the fact that it's a Radio One station playing this format. 2011 has been just weird overall. It just been fitting the theme of "If you think it won't ever happen - IT WILL!"

I think radio one would have been better off putting Magic on 107.5 and WCKX back on 106.3 since Magic was higher rated then they were. It will be interesting to see how Magic will do now.

My guess is magic will never see the success it did on 98.9 @ 106.3... 106.3's signal is just not there in the core areas that likely helped Magic 98.9 pull in the sweet numbers... I would say if they can pull half the AQH that they did on 98.9 they are doing well for that weaker signal.

It's still quite weird to hear "white rock" on 98.9 FM... It has never in R1's hands been anything but an Urban format. Last time it aired a rock style format was when Clear channel/Jacor owned it and it was "98.9 Channel Z"

My question is ... I would think those in side of R1 knew this was coming so it seems kinda shocking that this was a complete surprise!.... Wouldn't someone have noticed the Hard Drives on 1st Ave starting to fill up with non urban music?

Appears from Magic's old facebook page -- a lot of upset magic listeners at the "new static filled magic" station.

When I looked earlier today there seemed to be even more people upset about losing Joy from the radio entirely.
