magic 989 now jack fm and joy 106.3 now magic 106.3

You don't have to go to the Magic FB page to see all the complaints about the switch:

Was just listening to Jack (sounding even better than usual!), when the snarky-guy says something about their "complaint line," and the next thing I hear is a testy-sounding female caller saying, "I don't know what you did with the old 98.9, but the new one sucks!"  Don't know if it's real or not (probably "not"), but either way it's fun!

Not the normal industry wide protocol when a radio station moves to a different frequency.

Columbus has lost both its Magic and Joy in one day? I can only do 107.5 for about 1 hour then I am done. Radio One does know its listeners very well. It was bad enough that I could not get gospel inspiration during the day due to bad reception but now I can't get classic soul either.....bad move!

Looks like April needs to go back to school. Great to see that my hard earned tax dollars are allowing someone to embarrass themselves on Facebook. Ugh. Why do I even work?

Chad, did someone take your ball buddy because it look like you added nothing to the topic at all.

Now let me show how

It been about a week today after the move and the reaction has still strongly negative to this and People are STILL hot about this.
with how its looking Jack might be dead before year is done! I'll call that one right now that by January 2012 - Radio One will be forced to back track on this as there is NO buzz about Jack and if there has been any buzz it has been STRONGLY negative to what happened to 98.9. If they sell the 98.9 signal it would be dumb move for them as they are just shooting them self in the foot. If I was them I would pray to god that Clear Channel don't try to steal there audience by flipping 105.7 to Urban AC. I wouldn't put it pass them if there is money to be made.

This has passed Blitz/Rock levels of heat from the listeners. It's ugly.

I'll leave with this interesting fact about the radio one signal switch and its Facebook pages.

> Power 107.5 has 12,581 followers
> Magic 106.3 has 5,376 followers
> 98.9 Jack-FM has has 37 followers

If you are Radio One you should be freaking worried about that for one reason. If the listener don't like the station - they aren't sticking around to listen to what they have to say. I'm just saying

You can't really compare this to the Blitz/Rock flip because Jack is going after a completely different audience. Now if R1 doesn't advertise and get the word out about Jack then we will all witness a failure of much greater proportion than when the village idiot from NABCO flipped the Blitz to the Rock.

i hope they don't fail. Jack is on a better signal than Ted was when it was on the air. They could if possible buy the WVKO combo and simulcast Magic on both 106.3 and 103.1 and bring back joy on 1580am.

Allstar, you're judging based on ONE WEEK?  And using Facebook followers of established stations for a benchmark?  Who needs Arbitron?  They haven't even been promoting the FB page on-air (unless very recently -- I've been out of town and haven't been streaming the station).  It's sure not front-and-center on their website yet.  And even if it was, what proportion of a new station's listeners (let alone established) make a beeline for the website?

More importantly, as dawg pointed out with the comparison to the Blitz/Rock flip, this is a format that requires an almost complete cume turnover for 98.9.  That slows things down.  And they haven't even started promoting yet. You've got to get people who don't have 98.9 on their presets to sample it.

While it might take a little longer than usual to get ratings traction under these circumstances (especially since PPM doesn't allow a three-month build before the first report card), I think they'll do great IF they execute well and really work to get the word out.  The Adult Hits stations that just "slap it on and hope it sticks" often fail to take hold, or peter out quickly if they do.  Hopefully they're got aggressive plans here.  I still smell new ownership (which might further slow things down if they're waiting for the new folks to really ramp up advertising, etc -- and too much delay there could be bad for momentum).  But even if Radio One has no intention of selling or LMA'ing, I don't think they'd banish an established station with good ratings to London without plans to give Jack strong support.

I know I was going to get that reaction but I'm just looking at this like this isn't going to go well for 98.9. The Problem is they have executed this in the worst way possible. They really need to promote the station more then they are with a strong campaign and stand behind it, but they are getting some epic blowback and bad will from this move because they didn't. Perception is everything.

The Arbitron isn't going to look good for Jack-FM and I just got that feeling about it, NuRoo

If you mean the next Arbitron, I agree -- especially given Magic was in the top five 6+.  The book AFTER next could conceivably be even worse, as 100% of former listeners fall away.  But the real story should start emerging in 2-3 months, and *if* they do things right it should look pretty decent, especially in-demo.  Some successful stations are on fire out of the box, but others have a fairly slow build.

It's funny how badly Ted was programmed after listening to the real thing with Jack. I can see how this format has been successful in other markets. I think Jack has potential here.

BTW, the new calls are WJKR

Now, how do you know that, O Great Carnac? ::)

First of all, Radio One is plugging in the national JackFM service that was franchised to, and distributed by, Dial-Global. So not only is it super-cheap as opposed to a full-staffed FM station, the music isn't even coming from a studio in Columbus.

Even if there's a ratings hit (and there will be; this type of a format flip will wipe out Magic's previous demos) a jockless adult hits format costs next to nothing to run. And should JackFM take listeners away from Gen-X and Rewind, it almost becomes a literal ATM.

Thing is, while it could be an "oops" move in the long run, making predictions or assumptions based on pure emotions alone is just silly.

JackFM won't "fail" by your definition, however weak and petty it is. It WILL be around after January 2012. Mark MY words - that's common sense talking.

If Radio One were trying to get out of Columbus - and scooting Magic to 106.3 really fires up THAT klaxon siren - remember that this current economic depression is preventing any transactions whatsoever. They are pretty much stuck in the market, as CBS is locked in Cleveland for perpetuity (CBS announced that the Cleveland cluster was for sale a week before the 2008 Bear Stearns collapse).

No one, not even a minority-based ownership group like Radio One, is actively buying anything. Sure, there's Townsquare, but it isn't actively gobbling up stations like CC and Jacor were in the mid to late 90s.

Has CC/Columbus ever made a smart move? Seriously. Flipping the Brew ain't happening.

Radio is a business, not a hobby. Nuff said.

How long have Power and Magic's FB pages been in existence? And how long has JackFM's FB page been up? Seriously, that's comparing apples to oranges and is probably one of the silliest statements I have ever heard.

I'm just saying. ;D

Here is the things we need to chew on about JACK.

Radio One has been losing money and the investors are getting very angry with how the company has been run. We see that a multi-market ethnic format specific company doesn't work all that well (ICBC) among a few others. Especially with PPM, it can be very hard to run all the urban formatted stations when concerning national buys.

Radio One saw the need to deviate from Urban AC in Cincinnati, not because of competition but because the need to step away from a format that was not bringing in the budget needed to stay in format. Radio One sold Charlotte because CBS was eating their lunch.

When Radio One tried to get out of Ohio (excluding Cleveland) they had also tried to throw Columbus in the mix, the city brings them 6-9 Million dollars a year total. The London signal has no significant value at all to the company or cluster, it is too far away, similar to when they owned Urbana.

This is a move to
1. MAKE INVESTORS HAPPY (Jack will bring more money in than Magic)
2. STRATEGIC FOR SALE (If R1 dumps Columbus, it's harder to sell Urban and Urban AC than it is a mainstream format and a Rhythmic format)
3. SHAKE UP THE CITY (Competition is a good thing)

R1 sees the numbers that Magic brought in and if they did this it is purely numbers...not budgets...numbers. R1 needs to bring the dough in to the cluster. Don't be surprised to see Power 107.5 be tweaked a bit more to sound even more mainstream.

Magic 106.3 will probably last a few more months and maybe years. Again, don't be too surprised to see 106.3 dump format down the road and switch to something that would be niche on the Class A. Think a AAA is out of the realm? What about another country or even a Classic Country station.

R1 needs to make money and fast. They are bleeding at different parts of the body and Jack will help bring in those national dollars. Magic was doing well 6+ and even pretty good Women...35-64. The 25-54 numbers were dropping like flies....

Eric, I freaking love your logic on that. ;D

A lot of excellent points made there.

From what I remember and what I have read on this board in the past Power was best when leaning rhythmic. yeah,It does make the hip hop heads mad but Power had some punch in the market when it mixed in some rhythmic songs or better known as "What is this song doing on Power?" ;D.

One thing I did notice that on Magic page was a lot of the disgruntled listeners on Magic's page - 30 and older.

You are right about Radio One has tried to sell 106.3 for years, but in this market to sell a station is rough to say the least.

Again great points made.

Power sounded great as a rhythmic CHR and was #1 in the city.

I remember that and that was the last time I could really say I really listened to Power 107.5 like that. I'm mainly listening to WNCI now but it would great to have another choice in this city to keep WNCI on their toes.
