Magic gone from WMGQ?

I'm a WRSU jock (8-10 am Thursdays) who would love to see a alternative rock format find its way over there. if done right, considering the hotbed of punk/alt rock that New Brunswick has historically been it would do great in the 25-54s. Also, regarding their signal, we often have a better signal than them!

What happenned to FChris McCoy at WBEB?

Why is he going from a top 10 market to....NJ?

Hi Myke25...what's the 25 for, age or IQ??

if that's what you want it to be, sure why not.. :)

also, i got a chance to hear val's sunday night show.. she sounds amazing. in fact, she and i have been conversing and she's a really cool chick. :)

McCoy didn't simply "go from a top ten market to NJ". He was given the heave ho from WBEB more than six months ago and probably figured working at a 3k watt station in Somerset was better than NOT working. Yeah, it's a HUGE fall from the perch of Philly but if you spend too much time on the beach, your career can come to a complete halt. Take it from someone who knows. This at least gives him benefits to cover his family and keeps him on th air geographically between Philly and NYC. I'm sure that it is not his perfect idea of a gig but more of an "in between" thing. Maybe a year or two. Magic doesn't seem to keep guys in AM drive for more than a year or two anyway.

After not listening to Magic for a few weeks, I flipped it on this evening for a while while I ran some errands.

And, you know what? After not listening for a while, the station (musically) sounded better than both WLTW and Fresh to my ears. What I heard:

"All Night Long" by Lionel Richie
"My Life" by Billy Joel
"Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen
"Sunday Morning" by Maroon 5
"Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee
"Down Under" by Men at Work
"You're Still the One" by Shania Twain

Mind you, the jingles, jocks, sweepers are still below what is on WLTW and Fresh. But, musically, WMGQ sounds good. It's just best in small doses. I wouldn't want to listen all day every day at work, but for a once-in-a-while listen, it's not bad at all. The music is good. The songs I heard kept me on Magic. I had it on the entire time. But, obviously something still needs to be done. It seems the station is still trending down...

Has anyone else had this experience with the station (being annoyed with it, leaving it for a while, and then returning to like the songs you hear)?

I agree. I can listen to Magic in spurts before my ears bleed. If only magic would focus on more late 80's/early 90's songs that could use some revival. I think they've went overboard with the same damn James Taylor and Elton John songs... Hell, I'd love to meet with the Magic folks and give them my ideal playlist. I'd show them what they're missing. Here's what I'd offer for a few hrs whether middays or at night. Anyone else, feel free to add...

Celine Dion- Where Does My Heart Beat Now
Bon Jovi- You Want To Make A Memory
Taylor Dayne- Tell It To My Heart
Fleetwood Mac- Silver Springs
Journey- Faithfully
Cyndi Lauper f/ Sarah McLachlan- Time After Time (acoustic)
Elton John- Original Sin
Lifehouse- You and Me
Michael W. Smith- Place in This World
Sade- Smooth Operator
Hall and Oates- Out of Touch
Bryan Adams- Everything I Do, I Do It For You
Gloria Estefan- Live For Loving You
Donna Summer- This Time I Know It's For Real
Ace of Base- Don't Turn Around
Captain and Tenille- Love Will Keep Us Together
Elliot Yamin- Wait for You
Melissa Etheridge- Message to Myself or Come to My Window
Goo Goo Dolls- Black Balloon
Howie Day- Collide
Bonnie Tyler- It's a Heartache
Snow Patrol- Run
Nelly Furtado- All Good Things Come to an End
Madonna- Express Yourself
Annie Lennox- Walking on Broken Glass
Hoobastank- Running Away
Bruce Springsteen- Dancing in the Dark
Allure f/112- All Cried Out
Duncan Sheik- Barely Breathing
Pink- Who Knew
Dixie Chicks- Not Ready to Make Nice
Michael Buble- Home
Matchbox 20- Real World
Yvonne Elliman- If I Can't Have You
Rod Stewart- Forever Young
Luther Vandross- Power of Love

it's just an idea...... what do ya think?

I think I've heard all these songs on Magic now.

Have you even listened? Or are you just being anecdotal?

The songs I've listed are not played either not that much or not at all... Case in point, they only played Elton John's Original Sin when it first came out in spring/summer '02- that was it. It's a great song. How much more can someone take Benny & The Jets or Don't Go Breaking My Heart, when he's had so many other wonderful songs? Celine Dion's another one. Where Does My Heart Beat Now (peaking at #4 in 1991, her first breakthrough and english single) and To Love You More (another big AC chart topper in 1998) haven't gotten airplay in I don't know how long. It's always My Heart Will Go On or If You Asked Me To... I've not heard any other song by Bonnie Tyler except Total Eclipse of the Heart. She's had more than one song on the charts between 1978 and 1985- It's A Heartache, Loving You's A Dirty Job and Holding Out For A Hero. Yes, I've listened to magic. I've got it on here at work and I'm going to take notice to what I'm hearing and what I'm not...

What I was offering was imho, an ideal playlist.

Like I said, most of those songs are already being played on Magic.

Check Mediabase.

Well, they must be doing something right...cuz with a few exceptions (see below) that's what they're playing

A "great song" is simply a matter of opinion. You might like it, others might not.

However, all of Elton John's latter songs do terrible in music tests.....and have next to no familiarity.

It's nobody's "favorite song". And that's what radio stations do...play people's favorite songs.

Ok fine. You've stated your opinion. How often do you listen? I'm glad you're using Mediabase to back up your statements. I don't. I ask people, I use my own ears and what I've observed on Magic for quite some time. I just feel Magic's become stale. Does radio even know anymore what's a listeners' favorite song(s)? No, frankly they don't give a sh*t...

Hmmm ... having been on the air since Elton John's first hit ... I have to admit
I never heard of "Original Sin" ... I googled the term ... INXS "Original Sin" was # 47
on google, Taylor Dayne at # 150, and NO MENTION of Elton John until I gave
up at # 200. I have a feeling no one else ever heard of it either.

Original Sin is on his album Songs from the West Coast. Same album that contains 'I Want Love' and 'This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore'

That's odd, I googled Elton John 'Original Sin' and I've got plenty of links right here in front of me. :)

I said I google the term ... "Original Sin" and Elton John wasn't in
googles top 200 ... OF COURSE you'll get hits if you put his name in.
I'm just saying ... that song (and album) is pretty much unknown.

Example of copycat radio: This past Saturday morning I'm getting a haircut. The salon radio has Magic 98.3 on. DJ does a backsell and says Magic 98.3 has an 80's show on Saturday night. 95.5 PLJ has had "Saturday Night 80's" in one form or another for the past 10 years.

Greater Media considers punk/alt rock too extreme to sell to advertisers. WHTG-FM from the Jersey Shore has received mucho hype over the years yet never cracks a 1 share in the Middlesex/Somerset/Union Arbitron.

Of course they do....and they spend megabucks trying to find out which songs are their demo's favorites.

How do YOU determine what people's favorite songs are?

Well, they're wasting their time. They spend mega bucks trying... that's right trying. Are they succeeding? Probably not. How do I determine? I ask my listeners. I ask them to rate. I ask their opinion. I read ratings, I poll, and I don't spend mega bucks. In fact, I do it for free... So far, its worked out just fine for me. Are we done now? Good. :) Have a wonderful Labor Day.

The more you post the more stupidity you show.

How do you think station do music research? They ask their listeners, ask them to rate, ask their opinion, etc.

How many listeners can you poll in two days (for free)?

Whatever number you come up with, it a much smaller sample than most stations do for music research.

Well, thats great if you want to stay in the small markets.
