Panama City Magic's Panama City stations to be sold

they sent out a press release otherwise why would it be on all the major industry news websites and daily rags..... they are on playing what I think is the regular Island 106 format.....only listened for about 20 minutes....they were apparently checking the RDS...they had it on for a couple of songs showing title and artists info along with WILN in the PS line on RDS...then they turned the RDS off.....didn't listen today

I'm confused by what you're saying. Other than my RadioInsight, not a single publication has reported on anything about WILN other than the sale filing this summer. The only press releases sent by JVC in Panama City were for that and the flip of 97X to the Bone simulcast.

they have been playing the same 10-15 tune loop for about 10 days......didn't check today (Thursday, 10/9)

I believe they call that ... now, what's the word again ... oh yes, stunting.

Is this a "CHR is dying" thing, or just specific to Panama City? I'm not hep to the new sound, y'all, so I have no idea what's popular format-wise anymore.

CHR is a format in decline. A large part of that is that there is no longer a "new hit single" by a hot artist that can only be heard on the CHR station. Now, an album is released, all of the tracks are immediately available on Spotify and the like, the Hot 100 is virtually meaningless, and Country is gaining in popularity because there is a growing perception that a lot of current pop is mediocre at best and pure dreck at worst.

Country, Classic Hits/Classic Rock, and Contemporary Christian are the formats showing growth now in terms of number of stations and listener levels.

Speaking of which ...

Would a Christian CHR format work in Panama City?

While agreeing with @XCountry285, there is another factor to consider. The Florida panhandle is a bit more liberal than the rest of the state and Christian formats do better in conservative-leaning markets.

KM, few people know radio as well as you do, but the Panhandle is the exact opposite politically. Bay County, where PC is located, is the most Republican county in Florida by percentage of voters. Other than that, thank you for all the great information you provide!

Appreciate that correction. I was obviously misinformed by my source in that region.

not only that, if you tune across the FM dial in PC you will find 8 religious stations local to the area.....more religious stations than "secular" station....

Well, since I have already admitted to being misinformed, let me take this new (to me) piece of information and come up with a new answer ...

Would a Christian CHR format work in Panama City?

Only if it were significantly different to any of those eight stations, and only if enough people wanted to hear that format. I personally still have my doubts, but those are the factors I would consider.

Not only that, I believe one of the Hurricanes from a decade ago (can’t remember which one specifically, and it may have been mentioned already in this thread) literally and figuratively wrecked PC’s economy. Seems like a market that’s continuing to decline, and therefore doesn’t look promising for younger-emphasizing formats.

Even though Panama City was way over-radioed in the past, It has been tragic to see what has happened to this radio market. Powell getting destroyed in Michael, slowly rebuilt and eventually sold off to god-casters piece by piece (with PFM getting cast-off beforehand to EMF). And now what JVC is doing to the old Styles/Magic cluster.

That basically leaves iHeart, 95.1, FSU and WKGC, along with enough god-casting to bring on the apocalypse.
Radio is not what it used to be, but Panama City getting right-sized is a lot to take in over the last few years.

Keep in mind "Religious" is akin to saying a station plays music. Religious might mean a 'preaching/teaching' station, a one preacher only station, southern gospel as a format (I have heard a CHR delivery back in the 1980s with shotgun jingles and high energy jocks), Contemporary Christian of several types and traditional Christian that might include hymns and even like one college station, mostly sacred classical with some acoustic instrumental hymns as a format without any preaching. Then there is Black Gospel and Spanish language minisries.
