Mainline in Dayton....possible format changes???

if i remember WKSW has a CP to move to Enon and 101.5 so i dont think its gonna be staying at 101.7 very much longer

A black day for Springfield with all of the travails with WULM. Even though WKSW is technically licensed now to Urbana it is in essence a local station for Springfield. The FCC shows the new antenna in Huber Heights so it is actually to be a Dayton station. They will still have 60 contour over southwest Springfield but they will definitely be fringe to Urbana which will now have no radio voice.

WDHT was and is still licensed to Springfield but is a Dayton station as was intended when they moved the antenna to the Miller road hilltop location years ago, not the best choice for WBLY at the time. As a former resident of the area I am saddened.

WDHT will relicense to Urbana to "replace" WKSW as the local service for Urbana. The tower being left where it is, west of Springfield puts the appropriate signal into Urbana.

I agree that Cox plays it very close to the vest with format flips. I look for FM news/talk to be somewhere, be it a newly-pirchased 92.1 or 95.3 when it moves closer and becomes more of a Dayton signal (which can be acomplished once 95.7 is in Sharonville). I wouldn't look for a trade between Mainline and Cox; the tradng more than likely bhas already been done between Cox and Radio One.

Country goes away from 101.5/7 for sure..I doubt anyone wants to seriously challenge WHKO. I somehow think Z93 may get a facelift, but will remain, probably more hot A/C.

just a side note, i noticed today that Z93 has resurrected their "Eaton Dayton and Springfield ALIVE" legal.

When will they do it though? How long will it take? Do you think Mainline will begin making moves this week.
Today, I heard Scott take a breath after he said Z. Before, he always take those breaths before he says Z. I'd guess that means a switch to Movin' 93 sometime tomorrow.

Even if there are no tradeoffs in the end, the point being is that Arlington and Mainline like the fact that they now have (even though they dont have the best ratings) WDJX and WGTZ in their fold.

Seriously, if anything is going to happen to 93 its going to be minor tweaking. It thrills Arlington to have names like that under their belt.

If anyone changes its not going to be 93, look for 101.5 to make that stand.

Woh! Apparently this company really does like herritage. Anybody hear Z's top of the hour?

Look for Mainline to recreate a lot of the old Z 93 as its happening already in it's imaging. I think Movin is a good possibility for 101.5

A check of the FCC CDBS website shows absolutely no FCC action on the application to move-in WKSW to metro Dayton. In fact, there are a bunch of informal objections against this scheme - the FCC stopped counting after 80 were received.

Anyone can file anything with the FCC. It doesn't mean a thing until the FCC approves an application.

There are rules against moving rural stations to the big city. To get around it, one has to look for an exception showing an "independent" community needs its first radio station. They're trying make a case that Enon is a thriving independent community. For anyone who hasn't been there, Enon is a small bedroom community of a few thousand people who depend on Dayton & Springfield for services, and other communities for jobs.

There are also rules against taking the only station out of a community. WKSW is now Urbana's only radio station. I see a companion proposal to relicense Hot 102.9 to Urbana, without actually moving it out of Springfield. Pretty slick idea, intended to get around this FCC rule.

I think the FCC might recognize that their motivation is other than serving the good citizens of Enon. The proposed transmitter site is in Huber Heights and the signal would just happen to serve a bunch of people in the Dayton area, at the expense of Urbana.

In the event Cox gets a station, why would they put news/talk on 92.1? That makes no sense seeing as how Star 92 out of Lima would knock off a hunk of the Miami Valley that Cox is trying to hit with that FM signal... no?

Cox likes that FM simulcast to their AM. Now ofcourse they may keep 95.3 and flip that to the simulcast, but it helps boost their ownership of the news in Dayton by adding that FM simulcast.

92.1 signal cuts out around Piqua. Ive always wondered how they let the two signals get so close to eachother.

Mainline is keeping 92.9 CHR. They realize that whoever buys 94.5, chances are wont keep it CHR and this will be an advantage for Mainline. Even though a few people are throwing around that Z is dead, is it? I think its still a very viable station, yes it might need a tweak here and there but Channel 94.5's days are ticking faster only because of a pending sale.

The FM simulcast has substantially improved WHIO's overall ratings, not to mention provided better coverage of the market during the early morning and evening hours. To answer the question about the 2 92.1's, the Wapokoneta facility has been there since practically the beginning of time (tower was in Moulton, OH between Wapak and St. Marys for a long, long time.) There was enough room in the Dayton area for WROU without causing interference for anyone. The coverage of Sidney, Celina, etc. does not count toward Arbitron ratings; if WHIO-FM switched to 92.1 it would lose far northern coverage but be more centrally located in the Dayton market, with the tower with all the others (last I knew WROU was on WKEF-22's tower).

Chances are Z93 will stay around, especially with a venture capital firm that doesn't like to rock the boat. It may be a good thing if Z no longer has to play second fiddle to Hot.

I could see COX going after 106.5 if/when clear channel sells it for the simulcast. That would allow them to have similar coverage with what they have now with 95.7.

just my .02

There is an application wit the FCC to move 95.7 from Piqua to Sharonville. I don't think Cox is interested in Northern Coverage if that is granted. I'm not sure how that will affect the shuffle everyone is concerned about here. Any thoughts?

Z-93 is down but not out. Bringing back the Top of the Hour ID "Eaton Dayton and Springfield ALIVE!" is a great move in reminding people of the great heritage of Z-93. Flipping Z would be a mistake IMO. I think moving around some talent and/or hiring new talent would be a great option as well. Z needs a one guy/one girl morning team that relates to the audience. Mallory and Campy are tired. Mallory would make a great afternoon talent(His days doing afternoons at 'XEG were fun). Z needs a shot in the arm there. Scott is OK but not as fun as Sean Roberts was back in the 90s when he did afternoon drive. Anyhow, Mainline will most likely leave Z alone...It will always be a rock-leaning CHR...Always has been, always will be. Hot will remain. 92.1 and 101.7 are the wild cards here. Remember, back in 2001, Radio One wanted to put Ronita Saunders and U 92 out of business so they could own the Urban format in Dayton(and they did). I'm betting Mainline doesn't care about owning the Urban format, so maybe a flip is in store for 92.1. If 101.7 flips, goes away or leaves for 101.5 and a new format on 101.5, I see a mad cartel of hillbillies on the horizon ready to take out Mainline LOL.
Anyway, my predictions:
'GTZ-Stays and gets tweaked
'DHT-Stays as is
'ROU-Flips to Jack-FM type format/Sold to Cox
'KSW-Moves to 101.5, flips, and mad hillbillies destroy Springfield in a fit of rage :D

If heritage really is Mainline's thing, they could bring WING-FM back. Not saying they will, but it could out-bill a hip-hop station.

Man, would I LOVE to see that happen! I've missed WING-FM since it left the airwaves in August 2001 for the rap crap. They gave 'TUE a run for their money as well.
