Majic Change

Martha Quinn (one of the original MTV VJs) is now hosting 10am to 2pm on Majic. Kat Jackson remains on the station hosting the same shift on Saturdays. Jimmy Malone is also back on Majic on Saturday mornings.

Is Quinn being syndicated? I doubt she's living and working in Cleveland unless she's taken a job with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I fear we are now just starting to see the further elimination of thousands of live/local on air radio jobs, likely forever. Very similar to the auomating of many jobs in stores, factories, and other businesses. It’s sad, but that’s technology. Like I said to a friend earlier today...if these stations really thought that having local personalities was a huge ad revenue benefit for stations, they’d find a way to be as local as possible. Me thinks we’ve all been thinking stations simply couldn’t afford local talent. Maybe they’ve discovered it’s an unnecessary expense. Sad, but maybe true.

Yeah, it is sad. I only listen to live/local programming, which means mostly college stations and some of the talkers on WTAM.

I believe it is VT as she is on a lot of iHeart's Classic Hits stations nationwide.
she was mornings, now middays on ihearts classic htis station in san francisco thats her home base

QUOTE from Tim: . Me thinks we’ve all been thinking stations simply couldn’t afford local talent. Maybe they’ve discovered it’s an unnecessary expense.

I think it's both, depending on the station. They may be having difficulty finding quality talent... or they can't afford it ... or the return-on investment isn't big enough. However, new quality talent does keep coming. Nationally, there is Charlie Kirk on the Salem Radio Network. He's under 30, I believe. I don't like him, but he's there. Locally, Matt Fontana on WKNR is a young guy with a bright future.

I was mainly referring to disc jockeys on local music format stations. Unless a station really does a TON of local content....it might be smarter to have high-quality national, network talent. I was a disc jockey in 1 medium and 2 large markets years ago...it pains me to see the direction things are going. Are the days of the local (even VT’d) jocks numbered? Are they simply not a huge driver of advertising dollars and a unnecessary expense?

Well, in the cases when the local disc jockey is neutered so much that he/she has no notable on-air personality, that makes it hard, if not impossible, to stand out and build an audience. The evening jocks on WAKS have done some entertaining themselves, outside of starting the next song.

About the only station I listen to anymore is WAPS [91.3 The Summit]. Live jocks, [though I'm sure they VT every once in a while] always giving out some info about songs, what's going on, etc. I still would prefer radio to be more like the old days with the high energy jocks, flat out funny stuff. I'm talking the days of Phil Gardner, Bob "Vernon with a V", The "Real" Bob James, Kevin O'Neil, Lanigan, and so on. Enjoyed them so much that when some of them left for WNBC, I did my best to tune them in at night time. May not always remember the songs they played but 45+ years later I can still remember some of the jokes and bits they did.

im pretty sure theres more then "VT every once in awhile" on The Summit. Super great jocks and programming though.

The high energy jocks? Theres a reason thats not around anymore... it fell out of favor, its not what the public likes or respond to. The only people clamoring for that is radio geeks.

Radio geeks old enough to have been listening to radio 45+ years ago, at that!

As a jock, im the complete opposite of the high energy jock.. and guess what? thats what my listeners too across the country respond to

Unfortunately, it is at a point where WMJI should just rebrand away from “Majic” to a uniform brand among all iHeart classic hits stations.

Doesn't iheart have a claim to the "Majic" ID? I think they use [or used] it on several stations across the nation. Sorta like when Gorman had "Boom" 107.3. Learned the hard way taht CBS Radio had the rights to use "Boom" on their stations.

They have a local service mark in some states but not a national ownership of the brand.

As it stands right now the only live and local show on Majic is Mark Nolan (& Friends) in the morning.

After that it's Martha Quinn's syndicated show middays, and VT the rest of the way (Rick O'Bryan afternoons, Adam West evenings, and Keith Kennedy overnights).

Just after the holidays, iHeart announced Quinn would be heard on Classic Hits stations in San Francisco (flagship KOSF), Seattle (KJR-FM), Milwaukee (WRIT), Salt Lake City (KODJ), Minneapolis (KQQL) and St. Louis (KLOU). The initial press release said she would premiere on 35 iHeart stations. WMJI wasn't mentioned but it's logical... an iHeart Classic Hits station in a sizable market.

Plus Kat Jackson, who had been WKDD’s morning co-host and VT’ed Majic middays, has been moved to an off-air role in production.
