MAJOR ERROR ON TODAY'S (MON 2/25) PRICE IS RIGHT

Is Todd Newton the guy who was doing the live stage shows of "TPIR"
at the time of Barker's retirement? If so, I would think he would have been
top candidate for Barker's job. What still rankles me, however, is the abrupt
dismissal of Rich Fields and how, during his short stint as announcer, was almost
never on camera, no banter with Barker. Granted, I like George Gray from when
he was doing the daytime "Weakest Link," but he certainly gets more on-camera
time than Rich ever did. However, IMHO, neither will ever replace Johnny Olson
or even Don Pardo from the Bill Cullen days.

Something else I've noticed, and it may be tied into commercial placement: when
Barker was hosting they'd go through the one-bid/pricing-game cycle, go to a
commercial, then have the next cycle. Since Drew's had it, they'll go through
two cycles before a break.

But then again, daytime seems to be almost 50-50 programs and commercials;
someone on one of these threads was talking about the day he was at his
mother's; she liked "One Life To Live" and he was watching it with her. He
clocked five minutes of show, followed by five minutes of commercials, for
the entire hour.

^ As a lurker of Golden-Road.net, I do believe they mentioned Todd Newton as the host of that show you mentioned above.

I think the site also said the reason for the 2 games before the first commercial is to keep the viewer tuned in to TPIR longer, so the chances of changing channels would be less likely. I suppose that almost all the daytime shows now run at least 10 minutes now before the first break, which I don't care for, because it'll be ad-after-ad later on to make up for it. (Heck, *I* know they have to pay the bills.)

Yes...quoting from the interview with Roger Dobkowitz that was linked to earlier in the thread -- http://sb2tlopg.wordpress.com --

"I felt it was very important to explain the show to Drew. He had admitted on a television interview that he was not familiar with the show nor did he watch it! He went on to explain that he took the job for the money…CBS had offered him so much that he could not refuse. And, despite the fact that all the other candidates for the show (Todd Newton, David Price, George Hamilton, Mario Lopez, and others) had to audition, Drew was appointed host by CBS without any audition!"

^According to a paragraph in the trivia section for "The Price is Right" at the Internet Movie Database, Drew Carey declined to accept an offer by Leslie Moonves, the president of CBS, to host "The Price is Right" without auditions based on his performance as host of the test edition of "The Power of 10", another game show from CBS. The paragraph also stated that Nina Tassler, the president of the entertainment division at CBS, called Drew Carey to discuss a potential deal of hosting "The Price is Right" and asked if he received "a t-shirt and a mug from The Price Is Right". The paragraph concluded by stating Drew Carey accepted the job after being persuaded by his manager to do so and after several negotiations.

Here is a link to the paragraph (it includes details about other folks considered to host the program).
