Major LA Radio Station Flipping Format???

SandyG said:
92.3 will be the flip to KFI-FM. Hannity is going to announce Glen Beck joining KABC?

If Glen Beck is on live EDT 9 am - noon so he'd be on KABC 6 am - 9 am (presuming they'd air him live). Maybe move Peter Tilden to the FHF slot before Hannity. But what arrangements are made like this since Beck's show recently joined KRLA's line up? Is there a contract prohibiting his show to move?

So what if after all this ballyhoo of speculation come Wednesday afternoon/evening we just end up saying, "that was it huh?"

Then it would be like 95% of these things.

That's the truth. What gave some considerable credibility to this report was that it came from Don Barrett, who is a pro and not given to starting idle rumors.

Barrett was pretty specific in his tweet saying: "buzz about major LA radio station changing format" and not the typical yet vague: "big announcement Thursday morning at 7:15".

Is The Station Thats going to Flip If Its Not 92.3 or 790am Go After KIIS & Amp Radio Or K-Earth

Format Holes
CHR/Pop Mainstream (All Types Pop,Rock,Hip Hop,And Dance)
CHR/Dance
Adulit CHR
All 90's Hits

I Was Thinking KROQ FM Movin to 94.7

Would they really be format holes if stations are already airing those formats you listed, Jason?

Here's my breakdown of the success of those formats:

Mainstream CHR: Maybe
CHR/Dance: Too niche
Adult CHR: Leaning towards yes
All 90's Hits: Again, leaning towards yes

How about active rock?

how about the long rumored KFI-FM on 92.3 or 98.7?

98.7 is doing amazingly well (beating KROQ in music dayparts), and its signal is less than what is needed for news/talk in LA.

We have an adult CHR aka Hot AC in KBIG-FM; they're safe.

We have two mainstream CHRs which are both in the top five in the market, and KIIS is enjoying their best 12+ numbers since 20-year-old Taylor Swift was in diapers.

KRTH's audience is perhaps older than they'd like, but being #2 in the market for a Classic Hits station is plenty of proof to everybody that the format can be very sucessful in markets that aren't 45% Hispanic like LA & Riverside.

I can't see anybody flipping one of their properties to country just because KKGO's cume numbers are far higher than KZLA, even though they fell under a million for the first time in almost a year.

Even with their 25-54 numbers in OC being better than the numbers in LA, the overhead issue at a corporate-owned radio station is pretty gruesome.

Rick Cummings's quote in R&R when KZLA flipped (I hated pi**sing of a half million people, but we needed a million to make it work) pretty much sums it up.

CC just flipped WHRL in my Albany NY market to WGY-FM, simulcasting the legacy 50K AM blowtorch. They clearly -- from public statements made up here -- have made a corporate decision that they need FM simulcasts. I don't think they feel the FMs *have* to be among the most powerful... WGY-FM is a class A and, while the market is very different than LA, it is less than a fantastic signal into Saratoga, etc., and CC has much better FM signals here (like WRVE, which was WGY-FM at one point and WGFM before that, and WPYX) that they would not flip because they are a lot stronger in the ratings than WHRL was.

Does CC have any FMs that are aimed at areas in the LA sphere but not serving LA itself (and already within KFI's signal)? That could be the direction that they are headed. (Inland Empire, San Diego, etc.)

And in PPM, the diary's 500,000 is 1,000,000 due to all the incidental listening picked up.

Look at KIIS on 12+ cume: average around 2 million at the end of the diary survey, about 3.5 to 3.6 million in the diary. Almost all stations have seen what averages to a doubling of cume in the PPM.

This got me thinking What If Power 106 Drops Hip Hop And Goes Towards CHR/pop (Urban Lean) Power 106 "LA Hottest Hits" LikeThey Did Back in 80's & Early 90's

Re KFI on FM, it is well within the memory of many alive today when owners would simulcast AM on FM in order to keep their FMs alive. Times do change, don't they?

well anything yet?

Yeah. I am the furthest thing from being "plugged in" so it's not like I would be in a place to know, but what exactly do we have here that constitutes a buzz? One post from Don Barrett several days ago without any follow-up?
