Major Meltdown at WEBE this morning

Listeners are lazy. If their radio is set to one station at home or work, chances are it stays there. Now, many kids and parents lost trust of WEBE 108 for school closings. Next time it snows, which station will they listen to first? Commuters who had to drive to work in a foot of snow wanted traffic reports. WEBE didn't have them, Star 99.9 did. What will they listen to next morning? What would they listen to all day at work? When I went to school (graduated HS as recently as 2006), I listened to the radio to find out if I had a snow day even though it was posted on the school web site, simply because it's more convenient to stay in bed and listen to the DJ announce school after school.

Mistermicrophone...I'm glad this incident happenned to CUMULUS. They deserve it. Every ounce of it and more. I hope it happens again tomorrow. Cumulus is a JOKE. Most of management, engineering and programming are SMALL MARKET MENTALITY. Just ask anybody at KGO, KABC, WABC, WLS, Etc. I hope they die a slow death and have to suffer just like the people they screwed over. I have dealt with all of the groups in one way or another and CUMULUS OWNERS are a bunch of immoral people with no sense for business or treating people with dignity and respect.

I've heard CUMULUS will be bankrupt in 9mos and will start the fire sale. I hope so!

KGO, KABC, WABC, WLS, etc are all owned by Citadel, not Cumulus.

Star was given a gift from webe. COMPLETE INCOMPETENCE. Those schmucks over in webe land would like to think they are big market players. The monumental idiocy that transpired on Monday was another example
of bad management. Which starts at the top of the dung heap. ;D

And today several higher-ups at Cumulus took bonuses!! Well done!!

They can't pay the right people to show up for morning shows, but they'll continue to use their corporate jet and make their money!

Heads should be rolling at Cumulus corporate... and at WEBE over this blunder!

The missed point: the ONLY thing you have in radio is today's broadcast. On a day when WEBE had to be up on their game they were napping....in a top 50 market (I'm guessing.)

There is no excuse. Just none. Period.

According to R & R Bridgeport rank is #123 Stanford/Norwalk is #150 Danbury is #201 New haven isn't even worth mentioning. Again the morons who manage webe land think because they are in close proximity to NYC think they are
a major market player. They are DEAD WRONG! ;D

The only time I got them in New York City was a faint signal on the elevated portion of I-278 (Bruckner Expressway) in the Bronx.

For what it's worth....the station personnel knew the storm was coming and should have prepared for it. The person who was supposed to do the morning shift should have gotten to the station the night before if that was necessary.

I was doing mornings at WAVZ in New Haven back in 1978 and we had reports of the impending snowstorm which turned out to be the blizzard of '78. I was living in Newington at the time, over 30 miles away and I knew that I'd have problems getting in the next morning.

I went to the PD and let him know of my concerns. He immediately went to management and let them know. They immediately made arrangements to book some rooms at the hotel across the street because they knew I wasn't the only one who would have problems getting to work the next morning.

I was able to go home, get some clothes and other supplies and get back that afternoon before the storm started. The next morning it was a short walk across a street blanketed by 2 feet of snow to get to the studio and do my shift.

The difference between then and now is that management in those days knew that running a radio station was an important public commitment. The only commitment today is to the bottom line; the public and employees be damned.

We all (jocks, PD, news people and some sales people) spent about three nights in that hotel and had a great time while still keeping the shows running. And we all felt like we were making an important contribution to keeping the public safe and informed. This was what being a broadcaster was all about.

The station made a ton of money during that time too because we had salespeople who were working the phones and selling "blizzard reports" to sponsors. They and the sponsors knew that people who were cooped up in their homes due to Gov. Ella Grasso's closing the highways were most likely passing the time listening to stations like ours.

In the words of Mary Hopkins...Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end..........but they have. Good night and good luck America and in particular Connecticut radio..... ;D

WE-BLOW 108 is crumbling before our ears.

Curt Hansen has been at the helm far too long and needs to get blown out of WE-BlOW 108. Hansen has been firing people for years over the smallest things and it is about time that he gets a taste of his own medicine for this major WE-BLOW 108 screw up. CW is stale and worn out, and the The Meltdown is evidence of this. Remember, it takes a Fox to guard the Hen House. And CW and his posse are not minding the store.

Hansen should have left Clorissa's pad and shotgunned over to WE-BLOW in a New York minute to fix the problem, PERIOD! If Hansen had his eye on the ball, he would have know that a major snow storm was coming and put Stormin Normin' up at the Holiday Inn down the street the night before, like they did in 1978 at WAVZ as The Judge told us.

It's a no brainer....I would give Hansen and Ed Butler both, the Proverbial "AX" for incompetence and for dropping the ball, major league. I read Ed's sermon and how he minimized the dead air and complete irresponsibility of WE-BLOW 108 that morning. I fundementally disagree with Ed and it's time for him to go too! If Butler were doing his job and the systems were working as it is his job to make them work, the Meltdown would not have happened. The point is, the public deserves and expects the public service of snow storm coverage, period! Ed this aint that High School radio station WMNR. This is a 50K Wat Power House. Both of these WEBLOW 108 Managers are irresponsible and this event will indeed be there "Master Status" going forward. Hansen and Butler will be lucky if they can land a a gig spinning 45's at "On the Rocks Cafe" in downtown New Haven when the air clears.

I can't believe Hansen has lasted this long. There music mix is a freakin' train wreck. AOR (all over the road) doesn't even begin to describe it. I guess one reason he lasted through the 80's and 90's was his loyalty to Vince "The Crook" Cremoma. wewe 108 wins in Bpt and Stamford because no competition exists. Success is not winning by default! NO COMPETITION!And I am sure if Peter Bush wanted his old time slot back, hansen would figure out a way to back stab and blow Bridges out the door. For some weasels it's just innate. ::)

Really, Video? No competition? Seriously, what are you on?

Heard of Star? How about The Coast? HELLO?? How about the NYC stations that come in strong in the Stamford market?

You sound bitter..we get the point..

Such an attitude won't get you anywhere :)

Curtis W. Hansen is a weasel, he has no spine. He is an ordinary and safe PD or what ever title he holds and his play lists are yawners! Please, if I hear another Daniel Powter record, UH!

He is the most underhanded individual you would ever meet. He has been on this stick for years and I can't wait to see the day that he gets blown out of WE-BLOW 108.

WE-BLOW is tired, the format is tired, the jocks are tired, the jingles are tired and Hansen is tired.

Vote here here if you agree Hanson has to get blown out!

Daniel Powter has another record?

I vote for CHANGE at 107.9 .....WEWE 108. You talk about cronyism. Hansen blew out Jimmy Gray years ago and used the excuse of lackluster numbers to blow him out about 20 years ago. Stuck Bush in morning drive until he got tired of waking up at 3am. That brings us Stormin' Moron, who has been doing the morning show far too long.
They play power jingles at the top of the hour and come out with a Cat Stevens tune or better yet Harry Chapin's Cat's In The Cradle. I know Lyons is the MD. (Music Destroyer) The weed has finally rotted the PD's brain.
They play the same disco songs every Saturday night. It's a joke! All their jocks care about his hitting the post on a song. They spew out nonsensical jibberish for 15 seconds and then WEEEEEEEEEWEEEEEEEEE 108.
The great thing is the powers that be at Cumulous/Atlanta Georgia don't care about local yokels. it'a all about the advertising. And in this economy you have to be horse's petut to spend money on radio advertising. ::) ;D

You call those stations competition???? Star has been in an identity crisis since they started with star 99.9...where the music is the star. Nothing like making your jocks feel wanted. The Coast is such a non factor it's laughable.
107.9 has been resting on their laurels for years. it's time for some wholesale changes. And those changes should begin at the top of the dung heap. ;D

actually ratings were UP, not lackluster. Problems was GM hired me as a Personality to do bits, characters, one liners, (hopefully funny) as I had done successfully in another market. PD OK'ed GM's decision to hire me, but when I got there, convinced GM the humor, bits had to be eased into, slowly, ever so slowly so as not to blow away the music listeners.(Like I was a radical? This was just everyday topical humor, basic, with some risque but not blatant) Every morning for 3 years was a battle. Personality/humor to please myself, and the guy who hired me/ and no bits and lots of music and logo lines to please the PD. Whenever I pulled off some great lines, lots of positive feedback from listeners on the phone, but in the PD's office............."Geeee do you really think that was funny? I don't see the humor in it.....and you forgot to mention WEBE 108, the best mix of today's hit's and yesterday's favorites coming out of 7 songs..." I was not fired, contract was not renewed because quote, "It's not you, we're just going in a different direction.." First time ever that happened to me in radio, and with two mortgages often wondered how I'd handle it. I felt relieved. 2 weeks later signed a contract back in Providence. Returning to Connecticut condo, phone call from guess who?.........."Geeeee we made a mistake and we want you back..." Heard from an inside sales source many sponsors had cancelled.

We get WEBE 108 here in the South Bronx every day with a perfect signal in an apartment with windows that face southwest (away from CT), and we only have a tabletop radio. Star 99.9 also comes in perfect. (I prefer Star 99.9 anyways over WEBE), either way, If I lived in CT, Id stick to Star 99.9 on snow days from now on just to be sure. Yikes. Dead air on the morning drive?
