major shakeup for CMG talkers?

a friend of a friend told me on friday someone heard alen colmes saying goodbye to triad listeners, which means goodbye to wztk. a friend of a friend of another friend told me wsjs is about to undergo some wholesale changes AND there is going to be a major announcement this week, possibly as early as wednesday. sounds like the two stations are combining in some fashion. does anyone have confirmation on any of this?

a friend of a friend also told me some other vague rumors....

I have seen nothing or heard nothing on Alan Colmes ending his radio show.....?

WSJS/WPTF/WZTK rumors do make sense. Especially WSJS & WPTF.

just so we're clear.......colmes is not ending his show. he apparently went on air friday and announced that his affiliation with Triad area listeners was ending. I don't know if he specifically said wztk will no longer carry his broadcasts. maybe curtis is moving him to wptf

about 1:20 pm - from the WSJS facebook page...

parphrase .. 'today is Bob Campbell's last afternoon... he has to start getting up early now.'

Let the guessing games begin.

Colmes said on his show that WZTK was going to an all sports format, getting rid of the current lineup.

Just heard Bill Lumay announce that his show was moving to 850 AM. Didn't say when, but sounded like it would be very soon.

radioheel if you're correct I'm boggled....will they simulcast this somewhere??? WPTF???

I don't understand why they keep propping up WSJS, you figure they would simulcast that on WZTK

When a Hispanic group comes in and offers you a pile of money and all of your equipment is crap and needs to be replaced, it might be what you have to do. But how many Hispanic stations do we need?????? And, I agree, why keep propping up WSJS? Why not lease it out to the Hispanic group and keep the News/Talk 100,000 watter? This is ruining so many people's lives. Guess Don Curtis had no loyalty to his people. It's really sickening to see. He NEVER should have bought the failing WSJS. That was a terrible decision and now Talk 101.1 is paying the price. And this is a political year!!! Sounded like they had lots of advertisers and the advertisers seemed to be loyal. What a total waste. What goes around comes around, Don. Karma baby! It won't be pretty.

Allan Handleman made the announcement today at 5pm, stating this would be his last show and he is looking for a new affiliate in the triad for his sunday night show, heres the audio of the announcement, new format coming at midnght march 13

I know what the new format is gonna be...polka...yep.. 24/7 polka, get ready for it!, PolkaTalk 101.1, haha..sad to see them go, I will have to source around to a new station for my clark howard fix now.

Also, nowhere mentioned is layoffs?

I'm assuming Freeman is gone at WPTF? Any newsmen get axed at WSJS?

Of Course They never announce "Oh by the way....we laid off 5-10 people"

WTF

Has Uncle Don lost his mind? Let's compete with the big names on FM by moving more shows to AM!!! YES!!! THAT SOUNDS GREAT!!!

Granted, 101.1's signal makes 94.5 look like a blowtorch in Winston-Salem... but still.

I don't know for sure how many have been laid off, but I'm pretty sure John Brockwell and JT Austin are amonth the casualties. There are more and will probably be some at WSJS too. Brad and Britt will do PM Drive, so where is Bob Campbell going. Also, I believe Clark Howard will be 1 to 4 on WSJS.

The whole thing makes no sense. I think Don Curtis will wake up at some point and think "What have I done?" A better broadcaster would know this is a bad move.

Atticus, I think you are being a little harsh. I worked for Curtis Media for the last four years, and never found Don or Phil to be anything but kind and loyal to the people there. If this format flips to Hispanic, I agree with your criticism, but if it flips to sports talk, that just might be a salable format. In either case, they have gone out of their way to protect people...otherwise, why keep Brad and Britt for a couple of limited AM signals? You cant just keep losing money forever month over month and not do something...although my feeling is that with only one full time WZTK seller in GBO, the problem may have been staffing...after all, WZTK had 200K listeners multimarket cume. I do feel bad for the people involved, some are my friends and coworkers for almost 10 years. Anyhow, I think you being too tough on Don Curtis. And yes, it is Carbone. I am not afraid to give my name on postings.

A very interesting move. Music will still be on 850 on weekends, it looks like from their website. Raleigh/Durham is a market with a lot of northern transplants who might like this format. 680 and 850 are not limited signals.

I don't see how they can do sports talk in Raleigh with the 620/99.9 combo already present. Capitol has that format locked up.
