It's a very small group of people. Most don't. WBUF showed you can get pretty good ratings with a jukebox.
WBUF has horrible ratings for a more than 50,000 watt FM. Total waste of a signal.
This argument about if listeners like DJ's or not is really not focused. It depends on the format. People listen to Howard Stern because of him. News Talk listeners love their personalities.
As far as music stations, they matter and they don't. If what they are saying compelling and relatable, it will matter. I can tell you with much certainty that our personalities are very much liked by our audience. Listeners tell us that all the time.
Do DJ's matter on STAR? For what they do and say now? Probably not. It's pure Vanilla
Do they matter on 97 Rock? Absolutely. They are trusted, long time friends to the listeners. They matter. 97 Rock is a culture, it's a lifestyle. They have done a great job making it a fabric of Buffalo
Do they matter on MSX? Doubt it. Play the music
Do they matter at WHTT? Not at all
Do they matter on YRK? Yes and No. I am a P1 country listener. It's my favorite music, by far. I have not listened to YRK in years as I get my country from satellite. But working for YRK on air for 10 years as I did from 86-96, the DJ's meant everything then, but there was no satellite radio. I think the morning show matters to listeners at YRK more than anything.
This discussion about DJ's VS Jukebox is a valid conversation, because there are cases to be made from both sides. It's an interesting topic. Especially for music stations.
