Make Star 102.5 - Nash Country 102.5

Country is no longer a monolithic format, just like Rock hasn't been a monolithic format for many years. Is there room for another country station in town targeting a chunk of the country audience that belongs to WYRK by default? Yes. Will it do better in the ratings that compliment WKSE and make them a strong combo buy in women 18-49? Not likely.

None of the three major players in town is likely to change the format of one of their mainstream stations. If an independent owner gets their hands on a strong enough signal to cover the metro? Country might be an option. Otherwise, the stage is set with different groups chasing pretty well defined audiences and trying to hang onto both numbers and revenue in a difficult time.

The big conglomerates are absolutely and totally down on innovation. They will not try anything unless it has been successful in another major market.

Some are, some are not. I was with Emmis when we invented a brand new format at one of their stations and went to a dominant #1 in a really, really large market. I was with Hispanic Broadcasting when we created a new adult hits crossover format that became highly rated in ten markets and is now adopted all over Mexico as well.

Both were "conglomerates" and both did new, innovative formats.

Seems to me that could be said about anyone or any business. You apply for a job, and you need to demonstrate a track record of success before you get hired. I can't think of anyone who would invest millions of dollars in something without SOME potential for success. Do you?
