MARC AMAZON - AWFUL!

The Reds game just ended, and what am I greeted with? Not Seg-Man Dennison, as I had hoped... No, it's Marc Amazon taking calls for 30 minutes from the worst Reds fans imaginable... drunks, geeks, effeminate sounding nerds, and the generally clueless. I have not been able to pinpoint the exact reason, but I can't stand listening to Marc Amazon blather on for any length of time. The p**s-poor call screening doesn't help. With Seg-Man, bad callers are funny. With Marc Amazon, it's just sad, bordering on pathetic.

What is it about this guy that makes me turn the radio OFF?

You wanted to listen to Seg Man? I'm not too big on Amazon, but at least he's capable of stringing several coherent sentences together. I was hoping for Doc Rodgers, he talks baseball well and actually knows what he's talking about.

So, it was like listening to Larry Kings old Mutual Network show?

No, more like listening to Furman in the Morning... (and I like Andy - but this "show" is wretched!)

Were you REALLY expecting anything better from Amazon or WLW, for that matter?

I like Seg Dennison but part of me believes he's only around because of a clause in Willie Cunningham's contract.

Why are so many down on Marc Amazon? He turns a solid job every night. I really appreciate how local WW is local. I don't listen to 55 WKRC at all. WKRC and WHIO 1290 are two stations who I feel are a waste. WHIO does a poor job with their morning show and I am sick of the network shows. I get enough of the national scene with Fox TV News, CNN and MSNBC. WKRC can go on the cheap because they have no local competition. It's sad to say but WHIO gets by because pf the same reason.

Main Line and Clear Channel Dayton simply gave in to trying to compete against WHIO.
So even if WKRC is not what it could be - I thank C.C. for WLW being live and local.

For the simple reason that the subject matter and the daypart do not match. A local nighttime talk show should have an edge. The night audience is made up of people who's schedule and habits stray far from what is "normal". Night listeners, for the most part, are not going to be entertained by somebody talking about cutesy domestic issues, kid's soccer games, driving a mini-van, or what life is like in the bland, suburban beige vinyl sided world of Mason, Ohio. The people who are interested in such things are either in bed because they have to work in the morning, or watching Dancing With the Stars. I have worked with a couple of great, major market talk show hosts, and to me, Marc Amazon sounds like he's reading a script.

As for WKRC, sure, they run Mark Levin or Savage, but they do a decent job with the TV news guys and weather guys giving local updates. You wouldn't believe how many big stations don't even bother... Worst offenders include: WJR, WLS, and WHAS.

Doc Rodgers may be know what he's talking about, but his smug, monotone delivery puts me to sleep.

I don't know if Amazon struggles to get callers, but last night's extra innings show was laughable because Amazon jumped back and fourth from the same three callers for a good ten minutes. I wanted to give this guy a chance, but he seems to be getting worse.

I heard that too. It began with the guy from Delhi, and all you could hear on the line was the chime indicating he left his keys in the ignition. Amazon went to him 4 or 5 times with that, thinking "He's a regular caller, this isn't like him... I hope he's not hanging from an overpass!" When he finally came on the line, he told Amazon he went inside to pay for his gas, and was "watching some guy get arrested"... Yep, that sounds like the kind of place where I'd leave my keys in the ignition. Darwin's waiting room.

Any normal talk show host would have hung up on the caller and moved on, but since Amazon alledgedly struggles to get callers I'm sure he tried to prolong that as best as he could.

Last night, Amazon berated (repeatedly) someone he was interviewing for not knowing that the capitol of Nevada is Carson City, and bragged on and on about how he knows the capitol of every state in the union. At the end of the interview, the man asked Amazon to name the capitol of South Dakota. Amazon got it right, but mis-pronounced it. (Pierre, SD is pronounced "Peer" any talk show host should know THAT) .... then, he asked Amazon the capitol of Rhode Island. Amazon answered "Augusta" :(

WOW. ::)

I listened to Amazon a few weeks ago and he interviewed someone and then ten minutes later interviewed a completely different person.

I've never heard a radio host do two different radio interviews within a span of ten minutes. The phone lines must be pretty bare.
