March PPM - Running On Empty?

David:

Forget trying to educate these guys that Spanish language radio actually has formats. I sent a friend of mine an e-mail at a trade when he wrote "so and so flips to Spanish." I said how come you wouldn't say "so and so flips to English."

For the record, Phoenix has the following formats that are Spanish-language (7 FM's):

Regional Mexican: KHOT, KNAI, KLNZ

Spanish Hot AC (also called Spanish Contemporary, Latin Pop): KVIB, KQMR/KHOV

Spanish Adult Hits: KVVA/KDVA, KOMR

KVIB and "La Kalle" are similar formats with some deviation.

Even within Regional, there are different genres and as the format says it's "Regional." What may work in one area doesn't work in another. Let's not get too complicated.

Someone posts how KFYI has fallen while KTAR-FM has risen.

That would be the Middle Eastern Men of the Media, aka Nurse Jeff and Dr Akbar, aka Los Buckeye Boyz.

And when I ask if anyone can speculate why, the answer is "They have opened their phone lines to The Source." Then someone else posts "Doubtful the Source is the reason."

Huh? What's The Source?

Because the knuckleheads doing PMD on KTWeetAR can't bring themselves to calling listeners, "listeners"; they call them "The Source". Mystery solved.

Nobody can explain in simple terms why KTAR-FM went from #17 a few months ago to #4? Or as David points out, how a previously struggling Talk station managed to climb into the top 10 25-54? Other than KFI LA, I can't think of too many Talk stations that achieve that feat.

For some time KTweetAR has beaten KFWhyEye in 25-54, while 5~Fifty has owned 6+ due to the large number of over 55 year olds listening. Lately KTweetAR has overtaken KFWhyEye in the 6+ rankings. Why? Why only the Old Gringo (see below) can dissect the black art of ratings as Los Buckeye Boyz can't afford to subscribe.

And can we post in a way than more than a few people will know what we're talking about? I don't use phrases like TSL, spotload, ROI or other insider terms when I post, without explaining what I mean to the casual reader. The title of the post is "March PPM - Running on Empty?" What's running on empty, People Meters? Maybe you meant to say "KFYI Down in Latest Phoenix Ratings."

Posting in a manner everyone understands would undermine our self-importance and lessen the value of services we overcharge our clients. However, listed below are some terms we can share freely:

Lumberyard 14~Forty - KAZG
TMISU - The Men In Secret Underwear
Old Gringo - David Eduardo
Fez - official headgear of Los Buckeye Boyz
Running On Empty - Jackson Browne, 1977
Gumpdusky - Sandusky
People Meter - devise used by Arbitron to measure listening
3 Holes - Jodi Arias
TNBO - The Nearly Bald One
Sports Parkinglot 8~Sixty - KMVP
Michael Haggerty - The most interesting man in the world

Dearest Dr. Akbar
Now that you have spilled the "Frijoles" - "Beans",
I guess there is no longer any use for my highly valued "Middle Eastern Men of the Media" Secret Decoder Ring.
Sadly another era passes...
At least you didn't give away the secret of "Kookie"
Time to hitch hike to "Cow Town" - "Fort Worth" and visit Joe-T's

One "g", Doc.

And either the order is reversed, or you will be calling whoever the most interesting man in the world is at the time by my name.

Stay self-important, my friend. ;)

I respectfully disagree. The cleverly phrased/smartass/sarcastic wording is part of the charm of this long-running messageboard. "KFYI Down in Latest Phoenix Ratings" is too straightforward and to the point...which takes the fun out of this place.

What about the Lamptimer and The Wide World of Sports?

And what (who) exactly is the origin of "Is It Raining/Snowing/Haboobing/Windy Where U Are?" I suspect it is/was someone at KT'R-FM, but I can't recall details beyond that.

Touchy Touchy. Most use the term "Spanish" in Radio generally...without specifying what brand. When i think Hot AC, I think Mix 969, not 95.1

I'm afraid its a bit too late for that. A simple inquiry about the format being mislabeled on the ratings chart has now created some to think I'm a biggot ::)

That goes back to the 90s and beyond, when the overly polite KT'R-AM (Bill Heywood, Pat McMahon, Mel Baldwin, Preston Westmoreland) was averse to controversy (see: "Toaster Talk") and would actually fill an hour if it rained with the question "Is it raining where you are?"....and then put everybody who called in on the air to say where they lived and if it was raining there.

None other than The World's Most Interesting Man, Michael Hagerty, coined that term for the low-tech way Lumberyard 14~Forty dumped their carrier at local sunset. Prior to last year's Nautel installation, KAZG was a daytime. I believe Oldiesfan coined the term "drifting lamptimer" as each day it would advance the signoff by three or four seconds.

As far as Wide World of Sports, please view Mel Brook's "Blazing Saddles". And good luck finding a non PC version on cable.

I'd double-check that one, Doc. I remember seeing "Lamptimer 1440" on the old board and wondering what the heck that was about. I'm pretty sure someone else coined that phrase.

Now, the phrase "couldn't program the police band in a riot"....I'll take credit for that.

...thought it was you, but too many years of self-medication may be my excuse this time!

Well put...and it certainly describes a number of people who have enjoyed a less than mediocre career in radio.

Hey I just noticed you've posted about ten more times than I have. But put together, we're under 1/4 of the Old Gringo's 24,000+ posts
