As for Portland/Poland Spring, ME:
WMTW-TV (ABC) channel 8 of Poland Spring has that in-town translator on the Time And Temperature building downtown. I know their Portland studio is (or was?) in that building, as several visits I've made there confirmed. The WMTW-TV (ABC) transmitter is near Lake Sebago in Baldwin, ME. Channel 26 in the analog era belonged to WMEA-TV (PBS) in Biddeford (York County).

Peoria, IL has always been a UHF island as far as their local stations are concerned--however, the Grade B signals of the Quad Cities V's had (and even covered) parts of the Peoria city limits. (And they still do in the digital era even with all-UHF). The Grade A of the QC stations had made it to the rural areas of northwestern Peoria County too. And until about the 1990s/2000s, the Quad Cities stations that had county weather/warning maps at the time frequently included Peoria County in them (but not as much in the last 20 years or so).
Also in the analog era the Grade B signals of the two Champaign-Urbana V's (WCIA-3 CBS, WILL-12 PBS) reached about 10 miles from the Illinois River and Peoria city limits (in Tazewell County).

In addition to Quad Cities and Champaign/Decatur/Springfield market stations, parts of the DMA north of I-74 could also receive TBN via WWTO LaSalle, IL (technically Chicago DMA but transmits from near Starved Rock State Park), and their 5 streams of TBN stations from 35.1 thru 35.5. In the digital era they have transmitted on RF 10 (but still virtual 35), however. So technically parts of the Peoria market may not entirely be the UHF island as you might expect (in addition to the presence of the QC stations reaching Peoria when they were V's in the analog era).

And there's a reason for this. Fox 8 tried 8, but too many people had problems, so since they had the ability to go back to RF 35, that's what they did.
I think the problem is the market covers such a large area. The Fox 8 tower is way down to the southeast, and Winston-Salem and points west are a long way from there.
In Buffalo, NY all stations are on UHF except for Independent, WBBZ,
which carries Me-TV. Probably not so much of an island as an Igloo........

One day after I post this reply, we learn that repacking will soon play in Peoria. The Peoria Journal-Star reports that Quincy Newspapers (WEEK's new owner) has bought the ABC and CW (Plus) affiliations from Sinclair-owned WHOI (but WEEK and WHOI are in a JSA and share WEEK's studios since 2009). With the affiliations moving to 25.2 ABC, and 25.3 CW starting Aug. 1 (but will be simulcast on 19.1/19.2 for 60 days afterward).
No mention of what (if anything) will become of Comet TV on 19.3. Will that move to 19.1 or will Sinclair/Quincy sell WHOI's old RF 19 signal for spectrum? Or could WYZZ's 43.2 finally get filled again for the first time since the end of Cool TV in Peoria? (Although WTVP at RF 46, or even WAOE at RF 39, but IMO more likely WTVP, could consider moving to WHOI's old tower and RF 19 as both stations will be subject to the spectrum auction).
