Like it or not the PPM is the new metric and while it has its flaws we all know the diary needed to go. Asking people to remember what they listened too and when made no sense. Diary had severe weighting issues and so does the PPM, but at least you aren't relying on memory, it's real exposure.
I agree with Steenman that stations are reacting too quickly. My guess is the layoffs of T-Man, Marty, Jodi, Jim, and the list goes on, has more to do with cutting costs than really trying to compete for PPM ratings. As more stations go to a "more music" approach I wonder if the remaining stations that keep morning shows will begin to find greater success. I just did five month average for a media buy. 25-54 the Kent and Alan show were number one and JACK number two. 18-34 it was Jackie and Bender, 35-64 it is a four way tie with KPLZ, KRWM, KJR and JACK at the top. There seems to be a place for morning shows young and old. There are all music options that do very well, but shows do better. It is the same story in just about every market I buy. The difference seems to be that the shows that were all talk don't hold up as well as shows that are a mix of talk and music. Just an observation.
The MK shows the market was off almost 25% last month. I think layoffs have more to do with that number, less with the ratings number. I think KMTT sounds more current and better than it has in years and recent numbers are coming up. I hope they invest in personalities because that is a big part of the KMTT experience. With Marty gone I actually will add a station with news traffic weather and local personalities to my pre-set and move KMTT off in the morning. My buttons right now are KNDD, JACK, KUOW, KMTT and KJR-AM. I will probably put KZOk or KPLZ in the number three or four position to add variety and pull KMTT off until they add personality. My wife's car has KPLZ, KBKS, KRWM, KMTT and JACK. She just added KMTT a month ago. I don't think the personality means as much as the music to her. Again, just an observation.
I wish Marty well.
