Massacre at Eagle 106.7

A few random thoughts about the KICKS/Eagle massacre-

1. Christmas just came 10 months early for Cledus. His morning show competition self-destructs when he's only been in this top 10 market for two months.
2. Caddy's show on KICKS relied heavily on Kristin's energy. It's going to be hard for Caddy to compete with the Bull's morning team.
3. Victor Sansone looks pretty smart for bailing out before the executions, doesn't he?
4. The last time that KICKS had a terrific morning show was when Moby, Deborah Richards and Jim Vann were together ('98 won an ACM Award). The shows since then have been lackluster at best.
5. This ain't Citadel's first rodeo. I'm guessing that they've done mass firings of talent and voicetracked stations before, so what they're doing must have worked at other stations.
6. Radio is a sunset industry. Other media are taking its market share. Those who recognize this truth will prepare themselves for the new broadcast paradigms or die...simple as that.

What about Sari Rose, who came to Kicks from Kiss 102.7 Carrollton?

Sari was on yesterday in afternoon drive.

I think the reason they fired Buck in the Truck is they couldn't afford the payments on the truck. He might be rehired as Buck in the Ford Focus.

It was time for a change. This station did not have great ratings and thus the change.. No matter what lands here IT WAS TIME FOR A CHANGE.. I heard a rumor that all sound efx could be the next format.. Request your favorite chainsaw, dog barking, cat meow, glass breaking, car crash.. Its gonna be a ratings winner.. HEY Here...

Who is Johnny Gray? Was he on the air - don't remember hearing him.

Rubie had an amazingly long career, considering that the show was pretty vanilla and he was making enough money to be very expendable. Honestly, his peak as a personality was probably the late 80s/ early 90s. His saving grace? He reminded me a lot of the morning show talents in small markets, not so much on ability, but for the way big sponsors associated him with the station. I've been hearing people like Hardy brothers and Gainesville jewelers on 106.7 for years, and I've just always assumed Rhubrab was the AE on those accounts, even if he wasnt getting the commission per se.

I was a jock there briefly in the early 90s and he was a larger-than-life personality. Great guy. Amazing, though, how a focused, content-driven morning show like Moby's put Rhubarb in the backseat pretty quickly. Hampered by other personal demons, he never really recovered.

Unlike Barnes, who had another hand to play, I dont know what Rhubarb could do next. I hope it works out for him.

Johnny Gray was the music director for Kicks and Eagle for many years and retired several years ago. He was one of the driving forces behind the station's success because he was a music industry vet in addition to being a radio guy.

Rhubarb is under contract until sometime in 2009. So he obviously doesn't have to worry about money right now. And he could certainly do spots for advertisers like the ones you mention above and others, and make a nice living doing it.

Sandy Weaver's goodbye letter to record reps:

Subject: Life Changes

Wow...give a corporation an extra day and what do they do with it? Fire people.

It's been dubbed "The Leap Day Massacre" as people all over America who work for Citadel Communications lost their jobs.

I work for Citadel Communications.

Correction...I workED for Citadel Communications, until 10:45 this morning.

How odd, to go to work on a lovely Friday morning, head filled with all the things that needed to get done, with a band coming in to the station at 4pm to do a conference room concert, so all work needed to come to a hard stop in order to show the band and the label reps a courteous good time...and it all ended, quite suddenly.

Bob and I moved to Atlanta in 1994. At that time, and up until a few years later when I went to work at a light rock station, I wanted to be in the building I left today. Great people, a great reputation, and great country music...what could be better? And for a little over a year and a half, the answer to that question would be "not much!"

It was a great, albeit short, ride. In the year and a half that I was there, the station ratings tripled. I got to meet amazing artists, play their amazing songs and play the "music puzzle" daily...put the songs together in such a way that clashes didn't happen, flows did, and listeners would stay longer. And they did. Not the fault of any of the dozen or so people in our building who lost our jobs today.

Last June, ABC sold the radio division to Citadel Communications. Those of you who follow the stock market saw/heard the bad news yesterday...the company stock value was down so far it was a joke, and nothing short of a serious restructuring would keep the company solvent.

So...the Leap Year Massacre is also known as The Day Of Serious Restructuring.

The stations belong to the company, which can play with their toys in whatever way they choose. Anyone who works in radio and is surprised by events like this just isn't paying attention.

Life has changed...life will change...that is a constant for us all.
Something better is always around the corner, and I'm excited to peek around the corner!!

Wags,
Sandy Weaver Carman

The Bull needs to pick up Weaver for their afternoon drive. Wouldn't that be ironic, as she used to do that same shift when they were Peach/LiteFM.

That is a terrific idea. Sandy is a great talent. But will The Bull be willing to pay?

While that is a great idea, I don't think that will happen anytime soon since Clear Channel
has a corporate wide hiring freeze at this time. Besides I would'nt expect them to do too much
until the sale has been completed.

Anybody know if Mike Macho kept his job as MD at Kicks? Hope he did...

Hey troone - through a third party I just found out who you are and I remember hearing you a couple of
times on Kicks back in the day - small world!!! Regarding Mike Macho - I'm pretty sure he is safe - I think
there were 10 let go but Mike and Kevin O'brien weren't among them.

Hi gravelgertie-

I was never on Kicks, but you're right, it is a small world!
