Matt Siegel & Lisa Donovan OUT @ KISS 108's Matty in the Morning?

Granted Costa has never seen an opportunity for a paycheck he didn't like..... his restaurant show on NESN or whatever it was, his radio show on WBOQ, his TV game show over on WGBH... so now he has hit it big.

The question is at 70 years old how long can he stay in the saddle?

Granted IHrt either forced the decision ( most likely situation IMHO) or it was thrust upon them.... either way after last years dust up with Matty, they should have been making plans for a successor.... especially when they guy who is the face of the station is 72.

It has been said in the past that Matty is a cash cow, advertisers line up to buy on his show at top dollar.

I wonder if they will latch on to Billy Costa in a like manner.

Anyone got pool going on how long Costa will last?

The next few books should be interesting

The music underpinning the CHR format remains weak and uninspiring, the potential pool of listeners in the target demographics reduced by defections to urban and country. This isn't 1982 at the dawning of Hot Hits. This is 2022, with rock splintered into dozens of incompatible subgenres, with hip-hop squarely in the mainstream, and with country music now a genre with huge appeal to young women. Why would a challenger to Kiss expect any more success than Amp got?

Will Beasley or Audacy jump into the Boston CHR fray now ?
I don't see it happening any more than seeing a flip of WXKS-FM (as mentioned earlier in the thread). As others pointed out, Amp was a failure. I don't see Audacy making that attempt again outside of possibly shifting the playlist of WWBX to aim more CHR/Top 40. But we won't see a non-Mix station make a flip, nor will we see a drastic change to the presentation of WWBX. Even predicting that is a stretch in my opinion.

Beasley? I would place the safe bet that they are more satisfied with WBQT, WBZ-FM, and WROR. So, that leaves WBOS. Something tells me that it's more out of the hopes that some on here have for flipping WBOS, and calling it a loss; than it is for seeing a need for a true competitor to WXKS-FM. So, what? Flip WBOS with CHR music, but who do they put on their air to challenge a legacy station like Kiss. In summary, I don't see Beasley getting in the game.

As for what happens next with the morning show? I see Costa as a transitional host. I predict that a new addition is added to the show, who the station feels will be able to take over the reigns when Costa retires or leaves. I give it approximately five years.

I'm on record for not being a fan of pop music or pop radio. Yet, I don't see Matty retiring to be the same as say Stern leaving terrestrial radio. The show (sans Matty) is still in tact. I don't see a mass exidous of listeners over this, instead of sacking the whole show for a new show (local or imported from another market).

Does anyone have real numbers as the the percentage of the advertising dollars in the Boston market Beasley controls?

With WBZ-F being the dominant sports station, and WROR being very strong in some dayparts, I wonder if Beasley is intentionally keeping WBOS underperforming so as not to exceed the limits on how much of the ad dollar pie they can control.

In the short term I see everything staying the way it is across the dial

Can the FTC bud in after the fact, if a company exceeds the percentage of ad revenue?

"I started getting a little grumpy on the radio"
By which I assume he meant...his whole shtick? Pretty sure that didn't just "start", no?
I could be wrong though, I never really listened too much. He was dead to me the day he left 'BCN to go work for the disco station.

We would like to take a moment to announce the passing of Matt Siegel's radio career.

It passed away on 5/3/22 after being in a coma since April 19th

No funeral arrangements have been announced, but expect to sit shiva someplace with a early bird special close by

It's really sad and wrong how they pushed Matty out with no real goodbye.

I guess I’m not surprised given that it’s iHeart. But then again, we don’t know the whole story.
I'm gonna put my tinfoil hat on to speculate for a bit: If it was on good terms, iHeart certainly would have done this differently; this send off only makes the station look bad. It is not as if Matty wasn't bringing in the ratings or what have you.

It is entirely possible that this could have less been iHeart's decision but more of Matty's decision, i.e. bad blood from the Demi Lovato incident last year resulting in him want to just get the f' out of the there.

Certainly an odd way to see a host with 40+ years of legacy retiring and departing this abruptly. Maybe he has another gig elsewhere lined up (think Scott Shannon & WCBS).
