Re: Don't bash the mod
I totally agree. WSJS is an anachronism that should have been rendered extinct many, many years ago. I doubt any P.D. could really breathe life back into those dusty lungs without a supportive upper management team. And WSJS is sadly lacking there. I don’t know B.A.’s qualifications (other than pulling a short Music Director stint on KZL back in the late 80’s and her most recent producer gig in Washington), but I do know B.A., and with the proper guidance and support, I think she could do some great things there.
The B.A. I now hear on the air is NOT the B.A. I know, nor is it the on-air persona I’ve enjoyed in the past. She is not being allowed to breathe. She’s a born boat-rocker, but WSJS is, sadly, not the place for an iconoclast.
The big problem: Winston-Salem is an old money town, and WSJS is an old money station, a station built by cronies, supported by cronies, and enjoyed by cronies. Old money doesn’t like change. Anyone still alive who listened to WSJS in decades past is still listening (except for my father who, surprisingly has switched to WMAG and enjoys that “old black woman” he hears constantly. He was shocked to learn that the “old black woman” was Rod Stewart). And its sponsors- many key accounts- are still tied to that old money mantra of “change is bad.” It’s a security blanket, one of the last few constants in a town that is slowly being forced to reinvent itself. WSJS is truly the personification of its hometown.
