McBride/WSJS

So, she is off the air until Friday. What the hell is the deal? Are they sending her to radio school or what? By my count, she has done less than a dozen shows and they're already re-tooling? When will they admit they made a mistake and cut her loose? Or is this Tom Hamilton's Viet Nam (keep trying, never admit defeat, just keep pushing harder)? Keep watching...I smell blood in the water...

Now that is a juicy piece of information. Where did you hear that?

WSJS is running promos saying that BA will be backon Friday (1/17) and that she was in San Diego for "mandatory management training". Here are some of the seminars BA attended in SD:

1) "How to Make the Yard Sale Appointment-Radio"
2) "How to Make Alzheimer's Patients Call Your Show Multiple Times Each Day"
3) "Prunes or MetaMucil: Which is Better for your Audience?"
4) "If the old fart Diary-Holder Croaks, Do You Still Get Credit for Their Book?"
5) "Grabbing Any Warm Body That's Close to Pad Your Show and Hide Your Lack of Talent"
6) "So, You Made the Wrong Career Move...Now What?"
7) "How to Take a Bad Radio Station and Make It Worse"
8) "Breathing Techniques That Will Make Those On-Air Anxiety Attacks Go Away"
9) "The Art of the Comeback with Special Guest Andrew Dice Clay"
10) "Grabbing More Syndicated Short-Form Crap to Kill Time"
11) "Do the People You Work With Really Need to Respect You?"

> I think "Goatboy" is over the line with his so-called "humor" post above. He is clearly a loser radio-wannabe or has-been who can't get a job and is obviously jealous of Miss McBride, who has been most impressive her first few weeks on the air, considering this is her first on-air gig of any significance following her stint as a producer for Don and Mike. Kudos to saavy management at WSJS for giving a woman of Miss McBride's caliber this golden opportunity. And shame on you, Goatboy, for your sickening display of vicious backstabbing. I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't a jilted lover, a sicko, or even worse... a liberal who voted for Kerry. Pack up your hate and take it somewhere else, bub.

'nuff said on both of your accounts. I'm watching this thread, and won't tolerate further heat on this.

Moderator Matt

You've gotta be f'ing kidding me?!! You are going to threaten goatboy because of some comments he makes on a public board? Man...that sucks. So much for freedom of speech. I've read a whole lot worse on these boards.

I am very disappointed that you felt like you had to step in. Thanks Mom.

Moderator Matt's ridiculous over-sensitivity has been reported to Lance. Maybe Herr Matt could instruct me as to where I went wrong.

As for you, Mr. CKLW, maybe you can defend this one: WSJS is now running promos touting their "exclusive WSJS coverage" of the president's "State of the Union" speech on Tuesday. How the hell is THAT exclusive? I guess WFDD, WUNC, and WZTK won't be running it, huh? WSJS has the exclusive. She's the program director and she is responsible for running that GARBAGE. Defend that, Mr. CKLW.

Dude, that was some funny (BLEEP).>

I am going to send Lance a note myself. I find it incredulous that a moderator would step in on such a non threatening topic. I, for one, enjoy a little spice on these boards. They can be pretty damn boring sometimes and a little humor goes a long way.
And as far as Mr. CKLW's response...how immature can one be? A jolted lover? Pahleeze. I dont know who you are or who goatboy is, but I can tell you that goatboy seems like a creative radio invidual, not a "wannabe", as you put it. That post took some time to create. Yours...well, probably about as long as it took me to write this post.

Don't bash the mod

Matt was just keeping the peace, don't get all up in a hizzy because os something he DIDN'T do, namely, remove goatboy's and mrcklw's posts.

I thought mrcklw was over the line and nasty. Goatboy's post was funny.

BTW, mrcklw, since you're obvioiusly a fan of McBride, you should probably know she's celebate. Not a whole lot of jilted lovers there...

Re: Don't bash the mod

CELEBATE???!!!! Excuse me... CELIBATE? Hoo---ahhhh! You mean she may be
amenable to personal liberation by Mr. CKLW's 50,000-watt Tower of Power?
Be still my beating heart! (please notice the poetic way I have expressed this innocent-but-admiring desire)

As for Goatboy, I hereby apologize for my comments about his being a "jilted lover" or calling him a "sicko." But I'll still bet you he's a liberal who voted for Kerry.

Re: Don't bash the mod

Now that that's out of the way, can we all just agree that WSJS is an awful station that needs a real PD with real experience and a real GM with balls who can fight for his format and his staff? WSJS, despite its recent CBS pedigree has to be the worst talk station in a top 100 market, and that my friends all comes down to personnel.

Uhhh, before anyone goes off and speculates about BA's future, CBS had it's annual Managers Meetings in San Diego last week. (Those actually IN radio would know that already.) I would assume that BA was on hand for the festivities.

(LOVE the rest of your post though, some of those seminars could do quite a few of us some good...)

Re: Don't bash the mod

I totally agree. WSJS is an anachronism that should have been rendered extinct many, many years ago. I doubt any P.D. could really breathe life back into those dusty lungs without a supportive upper management team. And WSJS is sadly lacking there. I don’t know B.A.’s qualifications (other than pulling a short Music Director stint on KZL back in the late 80’s and her most recent producer gig in Washington), but I do know B.A., and with the proper guidance and support, I think she could do some great things there.
The B.A. I now hear on the air is NOT the B.A. I know, nor is it the on-air persona I’ve enjoyed in the past. She is not being allowed to breathe. She’s a born boat-rocker, but WSJS is, sadly, not the place for an iconoclast.

The big problem: Winston-Salem is an old money town, and WSJS is an old money station, a station built by cronies, supported by cronies, and enjoyed by cronies. Old money doesn’t like change. Anyone still alive who listened to WSJS in decades past is still listening (except for my father who, surprisingly has switched to WMAG and enjoys that “old black woman” he hears constantly. He was shocked to learn that the “old black woman” was Rod Stewart). And its sponsors- many key accounts- are still tied to that old money mantra of “change is bad.” It’s a security blanket, one of the last few constants in a town that is slowly being forced to reinvent itself. WSJS is truly the personification of its hometown.

Re: Don't bash the mod

Check me out on this: I was listening to the BA show yesterday (1/31) and I flipped over to 1200 only to hear Hannity. I think they are putting BA only on 600 and putting Hannity on 1200. Check my work, please.

What - she's not good enough to be heard outside W-S? They should just put Hannity on SJS and be done w/ it.

Website

They've revamped their website, but it's had the same fluff on it for several days, that looks like it's written by a kid. Also the recent news recordings aren't even newscasts, they're excerpts from talk segments that are nearly a week old. I hope they don't trash the news, it's one of the few things the station still has going for it.

Re: Don't bash the mod

B.A was the PD at Star 104 in Erie for quite some time using the nome de aire Shari Mcbride
