Let me say that I have nothing “personally” against former air personalities/pros in the Nashville market, but please, can’t you guys please stop talking about Coyote McCloud, Scott Shannon.

There is a website for those whom are obsessed with McCloud, and his former 97.1 sidekick, Cathy. Go over there and reminisce about the “good ole days” when he was on every morning. Cumulus did a format change and the within a year, the station has bounce all over the place with its format to where now it’s Active Rock, which who cares.

My point is, I’m not downing these jocks, but for two years now, it’s been nothing but a fuss over McCloud being taken off the air. Why can’t you non-professional radio people go find some other board to do your moaning and groaning over instead of doing it here? That silly Coyote and Kathy site is the best place for you. Morons with nothing else better to discuss! Even Cathy & Coyote would agree!

Now tell me, are you not getting tired of WSM-AM and WRQQ-FM discussions on this board 24/7? It's like some people think it's the only 2 presets in town, besides XM, ipod, or whatever! This stupid argument that Jason at WSM started needs to come to an end. He should be thankful he has a J-O-B!

For one thing, Nashville radio was so much BETTER in the days of McCloud & Shannon. Yesterday, I was at the library looking at The Tennessean on microfilm from 1972.

There was an ad for WMAK with their lineup:

There was also an article about Hairl Hensley doing the all night shift at WSM. He had recently replaced Ralph Emery in that slot.

Nothing today even comes close as to how special Nashville radio was in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Coyote and Cathy website was taken down a LLOONNNGGGG time ago! Some troll got on there and accused everyone there of being "racist."

C&C should never have put up that site, because it gave everyone false hope that they would someday return to the air. And as we all know, that never happened.

I recently heard Cathy on some syndicated NASCAR show on KDF on a recent Saturday morning. She was the cohost on that program. As for Coyote, I figured that he had retired by now.

And speaking of pros. Let me talk about another Nashville pro.

Saturday while I was writing a word document, I plugged in some of my favorite rock n roll tunes on the ole itunes player. The Byrds's "Drug store truck driving man" popped up. I seem to remember that when the Byrds album "Sweethearts of the rodeo album was made, it was made here in Nashville, or at least a good part of that album was. Roger Mcguinn and Graham Parsons went on Ralph Emory's alnight midnight show on WSM in 1969 to discuss the new record while Ralph played some cuts off the album. For whatever reason, Ralph seem to dis The album and according to stories, seem to be less than kind to Mcguinn and Parsons.

In my book, Mcguinn and Parsons were music geniuses. I am a huge fan of the Byrds and Parson's Flying Burrito Brothers work.

Now I met Ralph Emory once upon a time and he is a nice guy, but why, WHY in God's name did Ralph dis Mcguinn and Parsons? Or let me say "seem" to dis the Byrds?

Maybe Buddy Sadler can share the story since he knew Ralph Emory as well as anyone.

Not bashing Ralph, but was curious about that story.

Anyway, Mcguinn went back to Nashville West (LA) and made "Drug store truck driving man:. The song was indeed about Emory. In 1984, Mcguiin appeared on the old show "Nashville now" show and Ralph asked Mcguinn if he had made a song about him. Mcguinn said yes. Ralph still had not heard the record 15 years later. LOL

Anyway, as a huge fan of Mcguinn and Parsons, I find this story interesting!

I always like Ralph, his smooth personallity, he made you feel like a part of the family, no mater who you were. I never got meet him, but I listen to him on the radio and watch him on TV and I had much respect for him. In the 90's when TNN had his nightly show, some of the more "local talent" was crapy, but Ralph never said one bad word to them to discourage them. A true, professional, gentleman in our time. I enjoy watching him on TV. I grew up with Ralph on TV and on WSM-AM when WSM was AC/Lite Rock during the day and County at night.

I am getting old (45) and yesterday a group of friends sat around listening to old-time Country Music songs and overdrinking Cabernet Sauvignon (way to much/thanks for not screaming today Sarge and not playing Pina Colada song or Red, Red Wine)
and I realized that the music that embarassed me as a teenager (you're from where? Nashville? Do ya'll wear shoes down there?)
is so incredible and timeless now. Ralph Emery is one of the good guys still hanging on. I miss Porter Wagner and Chet Atkins, etc.
When I was in high school (CR, you may remember this too) it was fun to see how dazed and out of it Ralph was on
Channel 4 mornings. How old is he now??? What a fantastic ride he's had and still having. I agree the past is the past,
and we all should respect those who made the music and radio industry fun and famous in Nashville. Without them, we'd
be even worse off today as the bean counters/talentless control freaks continue to suck the life out of radio. It's sad,
today's youth probably won't have any radio stars/role models to look up to. Instead they get YouTube girl fights and other proof
that we humans are becoming less humane everyday...maybe we should keep the memory of the good ole days alive.

Scott --- I dunno, maybe Arbor Mist needs to start making yogurt to calm your nerves. Looks like things are better this PM.

For one thing, Nashville radio was so much BETTER in the days of McCloud & Shannon.

ALL of radio, anywhere, was better back then. But radio is a different animal now. There's still some bright spots and there's some this-is-the-way-it's-going-to-be-so-get-used-to-it spots.

But whatever radio was and is, there's one thing it ain't: finished evolving. Many things will happen that we don't like. Many radio denizens will be dragged kicking and screaming into whatever the next era is. But it will happen anyway.

You know those radio fanatics were fussing when all of the stations started bringing in Jack Benny, the Lone Ranger, Lum & Abner, Superman, Lux Radio Theater, et al. Imagine bringing that big city stuff in instead of all those great local shows where people would gather around the mic and play and sing.

When TV came along, vanishing radio programming cleared the way for radio to start dying a slow death. But along came rock 'n' roll and radio became the proverbial phoenix, rising from the ashes.

All that to say radio will continue to go on to whatever it has yet to become, and go on from there again. There will continue to be the next iPod out there, something that makes radio as it is at the time not quite as relevant, and then radio'll morph again.

Although it was before my time, I've really enjoyed what I've heard (and I've heard a lot) of the Jack Benny and Lone Ranger radio programs and wish there was something as great for radio today as that. I've heard first-hand the likes of Coyote McCloud Cleveland Wheeler, et al. under more than one air name and enjoyed the bits they did as well as the "good times great oldies" and wish there was something as great for radio today as that. And I know some day I'll wish there was still something like the Zone around I could listen to for sports and sports talk after the next evolving.

I agree...and you guys have made my day. By the way Tibbs, my oldest son will be 43 this summer.

Yes radio is a different animal. I can still recall listening to Straight Arrow, Red Skelton, The Green Hornet, Jack Benny, Bob Hope and many others when radio was all we had. The 'Inner Sanctum Hour' (sp) was so scarey I frequently listened from under the covers. This was before T-V in Nashville. This may help you understand my thrills over the years when I was able to meet/interview Red skelton, Bob Hope, Roy Rogers and many of my other boyhood heroes.

Television, when I was a young kid, came to Nashville and was going to replace radio and the movies according to the 'know it alls.' Guess what, it didn't. Okay, it's all changing. Will radio be replaced? Will TV change a lot? Maybe some of our 'know it alls' will be right.
I just hope to be able to see when and how it does....if it does.

Enjoy now what you like and talk about it when that's what you want to do. I just hope most of you are able to have the same great memories I do.

Let me say that I totally agree that Ralph Emory was a pro. I remember hearing Ralph one evening when he had misplaced his notes and maybe for a split second, lost his train his thought. I sat back and listened to him recover with all the smoothness of a radio veteran. Many a DJ would have blundered their way through such a thing, but not Ralph. I remember thinking. This guy is good!

I was just curious as to what went down in that 1969 radio interview with Roger Mcguinn and Graham Parsons that so upset them that they recorded a satirical song about Emory?

I think if "radio free" WKDA FM rock had been around in 1969, that would have been the prefect place for that "Sweethearts of the rodeo" album to be featured. The Byrds thought so much of country music and Nashville that they wanted to record a record here. Bob Dylan along with Nashville music sessions guys recorded "Nashville Skyline" a few months later. The gap between rock and country was already disappearing by 1969.

I did read that The Byrds did play the Opry. When introduced, they were met with a lukewarm, but polite reception. They did an old Merle Haggard song and the crowd gave them a good applause. The only thing that I can figure that might have played a part of this was "The Byrds" were a west coast "Counter culture rock n roll band.Nashville was politically and culturally conservative way back then.

Yes Barefoot Jerry was one of Nashville's finest products, actually Gallatin, but close enough.

Wane Moss of Barefoot Jerry fame contributed on some Dylan projects, notably Blonde on Blonde, which is one of my favorite Dylan albums.

I remember Carl P Mayfield was fond of their music as well. The first time I saw them was in the summer of 1971 doing a free concert at Centennial park for Underground KDA FM.

Delta, I think that Wayne Moss and Mac Gayden were from that area. I could be wrong though. Either Gallatin or North Madison area.

Wayne Moss and Mac Gayden were part of the band when it was called Area code 615. The first Barefoot Jerry album was released in 1971 called: "Southern delight" which is my favorite.

I think Charlie McCoy was part of the original Barefoot Jerry group as well as Keneth Buttrey. Keneth Buttrey later left and did some work in Neil Young's band. He also worked with some other well know rock people of the day.

"Minstrel be free at last" is by far my favorite Barefoot Jerry song. That one has Mac Gayden on the vocals. I heard Wayne Moss is alive and in retirement. I think he knows that he has many, MANY fans worldwide!

I'm so confused. I believe that if you knew or even met Coyote you wouldn't have made this odd post. people here still talk of the great person he is and was while working here (97-1). The way he was treated at the end was low class. The last thing that's needed is for you to suggest that we stop talking about him. The man has had much more of a career than you and he's the most humble about it. I just find it interesting that you would attack him here.

And as Coyote would say about your statement, "el correcto.' Obviously some people here haven't met a lot of the people they criticize.
He is one of the sharpest guys I ever worked with. No ego, didn't have to have the last word or the punch line. Just wanted a good show. I still have a tape of a Christmas bit he did that was 'fall over funny.' When he was doing Bruce Kroon (sp?) he was so good at it I'd find myself looking in the direction of where the voice was allegedly coming from. And he could work the crossword puzzle while doing the show. A real entertainer and a good friend.

I never worked with him, but Scott is a friend whose resume speaks for itself. It's okay to have opinions, but people who are in a position to judge know the truth.
Both these guys are classics.
