Jim DeFede Joins WINZ/Miami For Mornings

CBS O&O WFOR-TV (CBS4)/MIAMI commentator and former MIAMI HERALD and MIAMI NEW TIMES columnist JIM DEFEDE is joining CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WINZ-A/MIAMI as morning host, starting JULY 24. DEFEDE was fired by the HERALD in a controversial move after he admitted tape-recording a call from a local politician who later committed suicide in the paper's lobby, a firing that drew widespread opposition from journalists nationwide.

The HERALD reports that DEFEDE is also starting a column in LRM (LIVING REAL MIAMI) MAGAZINE (formerly LINCOLN ROAD MAGAZINE), starting in the SEPTEMBER issue, and will remain on CBS4's staff.
This makes Miami's WINZ the final progressive talk station with decent numbers to go AAR-free before noon. Recently, the station dropped Jerry Springer to pick up Stephanie Miller (even though WINZ had taken Jerry directly from Clear Channel before Springer made a distribution deal with AAR).

Another demonstration of the winning formula for progressive talk:
  • Have a good signal.
  • (In the East)Take Steph, not Jerry.
  • Go local live in morning drive
Mornings are crucial to building an audience in radio - especially AM drive. And mornings are where AAR is weakest, which cripples them throughout the day. Maybe Cincinnati will take a hint.
