Flipping through my presets this afternoon in Mansfield, I noticed that 98.3/107.7 KISS FM is no more... now both stations are simulcasting WFXN 102.3 The Fox (Galion). So much for moving towards radio choice around here :/ (nothing against The Fox, but on 3 stations... within 35-40 miles of each other??) Now its back to the same old 3 formats for Mansfield: AC, County, and Classic Rock... Better keep that Superadio around a while longer to pull Columbus...

CC What are you thinking?!

There was a discussion last month on the Cleveland board about the switch. I'm with you, no more Kiss FM on the way up 71 anymore really sucks.
______________

Agreed. Y105.3 Just don't cut it as far as hit music goes. They sound very similar to Mix 94.3 in Marion

You think? I always thought Mix 94.3 was more CHR. I always wonder why they keep the Mix label.

Don't you think Mix 97.1 sounds more like a CHR now too? I heard them playing Nelly - Ride with me (Must be the money) on there. It was kind of a pleasant surprise for me to tell you the truth.
______________

Really? Does Mix 94.3 play Kanye West and 50 Cent? WNCI seems to play those artists a lot these days.

I have heard Juvenile "Slow Motion" on Mix 94.3, along with 50 and other CHR tracks. They are definitely not as Hot AC as most Mixes.
______________

Mix 94.3 WDIF leans more CHR than Mix. When they first started with the "Mix" they where very AC/Hot AC but in recent years they have progressed into more CHR even using the same voice talent as some of the Kiss'es do. In fact, I think they sound better than WNCI but that's my personal opinion.

MIX is just that, a label. It means nothing to listeners as far as format. There's a KISS (Cox) in Austin TX. It's a heritage rocker.

I know where you're coming from so this is not a blast. I too think "KISS" for a rock station? But it's been that for years, long before KISS was stamped across the U.S. by CC.

And there's a "Kiss FM" in Washington, DC. But it's a Radio-One R&B/hip-hopper, and has held variations of that format since the 80's. The Kiss label was also on WKSW/99.5-FM in Cleveland back in the late-70's. EZ listening, it was no relation to the current Kiss-FM in Cleveland, though 99.5 and WAKS are under common ownership.

The Mix label is also on CHR stations, and adult R&B stations.

The Kiss label for CC (and accompying ball logo that 98.7/107.7 had, and WAKS has) comes directly from KIIS-FM in LA. Then-owner Gannett trademarked the name, which made it easy for CC.

The short of it: CC got out of Mount Vernon by selling WQIO and WMVO to BAS. Then they relocated 98.7/107.7 - which was with WQIO/WMVO - up to the Ashland/Mansfield cluster, merging it with WFXN. With that came the death of "Kiss" - and the CHR format on Y105.

One of the oddest labels as far as I'm concerned was for 99.7 in Columbus before it became WBZX the Blitz. It was a Classic Rocker (and a rather hard-edged one for the time): WMGG, "Magic 99.7". "Magic"? How cool for an edgy Classic Rocker. Magic was a term mostly used by wimpy AC's (as well as some urbans), and I think it could have worked at cross-purposes to WMGG's Rocker imaging and thus hurt its ratings.

They originally took on the calls and the handle when the station flipped to 50's/60's Oldies (oddly dubbed "Classic Hits") in fall of '86. When they segued to Classic Rock about six months later, they made the mistake of keeping the moniker "Magic 99.7".

I also find it interesting that no other Active Rocker copied the Blitz's moniker, despite its success.
______________
