Mid-South Radio

Mid-South Radio is like the stock market- it stinks right now!

not sure what this post is supposed to mean. can we get back to the subject at hand? a program director has supposedly been dismissed from 93X, and a possible format change is in the wind...does anyone know the real story?

You didn't hear this from me, but the Mayan calendar ends in 2012.
That's when the contract with the Grey's ends, and we all become guinea pigs for the wicked gods from the glowing lights in the sky that ride in on thier chariots made of metal and fire.

Either that, or 'Chinese Democracy' may come out this year.

shhh!!!!!

Dude.

The market's GREAT right now. EVERYTHING'S on sale.

AAPL down over 40% for the year? Buy! GE in the low 20s? Insane. Buy! Now, CDL? I'm savin' my money.

I'm just sayin'. If you can go long, now's the time.

Alright. So, I have been called out by a certain well-known afternoon AC DJ*, who called my CDL mention, "a cheap shot." Possible, I guess. :)

But, it does raise an interesting point: radio stocks are taking a huge hit right now, far outpacing the downward trend in the market.

Citadel (CDL) hit a new 52-week low today @ 67 cents. The stock is in danger of being de-listed from the NYSE. For Q2, The company reported a net loss of $251.6 million.
Entercom (ETM) lost 16% today alone, and is just above its 52-week low, closing at $3.94. Entercom just reported a really bad Q2.
Emmis (EMMS) is just a couple of cents above the 52-week low, closing @ 78 cents.
Sirius/XM is just above its 52-week low @ 58 cents.

I could go on. So, the question is: is this an opportunity, or will radio continue to underperform the market? Does buying Entercom or Emmis make sense, or would someone be throwing money away (like I did on Lehman)? And, how does the current credit freeze affect companies that need to borrow capital to continue going forward?

This is all quite interesting, but making appropriate conclusions here falls outside my skill set.

I'm saying don't go there. They were in trouble of thier own doing before the crash. I went with some tech stocks that took the biggest hit (with the thinking they would have the most recovery) and some financial institutions that look like they will survive.

Still, if you have to use paycheck money for this, don't.

On another note, I was a little upset when First Tennessee sold off my mortgage (and everyone else's) a few months ago after promising years ago they wouldn't. Turns out they were way ahead of the curve.

Who were you quoting here?  I recognize stations from Dyersburg, Jackson, Milan, Kennett, McKenzie, Alamo, Humboldt, Trenton, Caruthersville/Hayti, and of course, Memphis!  ;D  (Not necessarily in that order.)  I also recognize stations and call letters that haven't existed for many years!

I've worked for WDXN (AM 540) in Clarksville, but believe me, it ain't nothing to brag about!  ::)

The only one on that list that I have also worked for is WHDM in McKenzie.  I'm surprised the above person (apparently) never also worked for WCMT in Martin.  Evidently, he never ventured that far north!  ;D It seems like all rural west Tennessee broadcasters passed through WCMT at one time or another.   (And I emphasize "pass through" because I don't think anyone could build a career there!  ::))

Hey FUN, when did you work at 'KIR? It would be interesting to find someone who worked there at about the same time as I did, which was early '81, when we changed it over from AOR.

the very end of 1984 to first of 1986 I work with Wayne Doles,Owen Saxon,Steve Little ect..

I never hear of a good story to come out of WCMT and PT. Why do folks put up with low money and questionable working conditions?

Wow. To pick up on my previous post...

CDL stock now at 38 cents. Market cap just dropped below $100m. It's getting tough out there!

DE

let's all put in the money and buy us a station??

Because they're young and naive and don't have any previous broadcasting experience so they are willing to put up with (almost) anything just to get the proverbial "foot in the door." At least, a lot of that was true for me ;D, although they weren't the first station I worked for, just the first one to offer me a full-time shift.

And Thunderbolt just screws people over because they can!

They ought to put a revolving door at the entrance to the studios because the turnover at North Lindell is so high!

How does he succeed then? And, he continues to buy stations...he must be doing something right.

PeDrO

He sold the Trenton and Milan station off after about two years and up grades to Grace Broadcasting and boy did they pay out the ass. :-[

They've always been local. They still do a lot of remotes, so they are still very visible in the community. And Paul still does almost everything: sells spots, produces spots (primarily his own accounts, of course ::)), reads news, and does play-by-play of high school football and basketball.

Of course, I should also add that he is the only show in town, and has no real competition in Weakley County! ::)

Yeah, he is VERY local...so I guess that helps with advertising...networking and such. He does have some competition from WENK in Union City for ad dollars as their signals cross as well as WTPR in Paris.
