MIKE FM

Given the baby boomer demo, less rock and roll wouldn't be likely. They may be mostly aiming for the rock/pop market and just throwing in other stuff to be offbeat.

Most of their music is '80s and '90s. That's out of the baby boomer demo and solidly into Gens X and Y.

Maybe so, though I'm 49 (born in '62, supp. in baby boomers) and I do like 80s stuff (90s not so much). But the focus indeed could well be gen x, gen y as you say

I listened today (Saturday) August 6, 2011 3pm hour, ALLL Rock and Roll!!! Hard and Soft, latest and classic, same with around 4:45pm-5:05pm.
There are wayyyyy too many Rock and Roll music.
What they should do is changs to Soft Rock/HOT AC, go up against Magic and Mix 104.1, If they want to remain jockless, but in this case, Weekdays Midnight-3pm "HOT AC" Dial-Global, 3pm-7pm "Doug Banks Show" (AURN.COM), 7pm-Midnight "HOT AC" Dial-Global. On weekends put on some Syndicated Urban AC Countdowns, and maybe a Syndicated Smooth Jazz Show (Unitedstations.com) I mean, come on, there are wayy too many Rock and Roll stations, no one plays new Freddie Jackson music, new Jennifer Hudson music, new Charlie Wilson music, new Bobby Brown music, no real radio station in Boston play new Urban AC music.
Everything is Rock and Roll
COME ON  They say they play everything
so play everything
enough with the Rock and Roll
Star 93.7 could've been around for longer if they programed it right

Ratings 6 plus
http://www.radio-info.com/markets/boston
In this survey they are just a hair under WAAF, Entercom Boston's leading music station. For a station with a low budget, they undoubtedly make money for them; whether these suggestions
would make them more, who knows, but I don't see any changes unless they suffer a nosedive in
ratings or billing.

Sure, I'd like more "variety" myself but they mean a variety of rock, their mainstay. They accent the rock even if they say "we play everything". Send an email or letter to Jason Wolfe and explain
and see what he does.
Using Tunegenie from their website I see they played:
Eagle-Eye Cherry,Timbuk3, Billy Squire, The Outfield, Linkin Park, Journey, Van Halen,Pretenders,
Ozzy Osbourne, Talking Heads,War, Stevie Wonder, The Police, Springsteen, REM...

The "we play everything" isn't meant to be literal with all types of music, only with, for the most part, rock. You don't hear Muddy Waters, Raffi, Kenny Chesney, The Buzzcocks, Pete Seeger,
Johnny Mathis (OK maybe they'll play Wonderful Wonderful once in a blue moon), Freddie Jackson,
Keiko Matsui, Wes Montgomery (what would they play for jazz, Chuck Mangione maybe?)

They're after a certain audience and they reach them. Offer your suggestions to the bigwigs at Entercom and maybe they'll change their music mix, if they think what you suggest will work.
"Random", or "ran-dumb" if you prefer, music has done well for them at low cost and if they
can tweak it and get more listeners more power to them. If anything stations like this reflect a trend: people are paying attention to their mp3 players/Ipods...so why not offer a station that does the same thing... WITHIN LIMITS. That's right, they "play everything" but like most stations they are scared silly that if a certain song gets aired many of their listeners may tune out and not come back.... They have to be "safe", even if they're "...daring".

They don't!!!!

It's only a slogan, a liner. It means nothing.

Just like all the stations limited to a couple of hundred songs playlist that say "the most variety".

Most of the masses of listeners to major market stations want to be told, and want to believe, that they want to hear a wide variety, and they want to believe that they're hearing a wide variety, or that their station "plays everything" because they may throw in something a little odd once in a while to distinguish themselves, but that is all a marketing delusion.

As the ratings bear out, most of the masses really do want to hear their same favorite few hits, in their favorite genre, over and over again, and the stations know this no matter what their slogans may say.

and someday in the not so near future some one trick pain in the butt with keep trotting out...

"WE NEED MORE SOFT RAP>>>>AC RAP>>>"

Who cares. Apparently Entercom is satisfied. I've talked to a number of folks who love the station...

Oh well....

juat because you all like Rock and Roll doesn't mean everyone like it.
Entercom made the biggest mistake!!!
They took away a great radio station, and replaced it with a bad trash music. They could've kept Star 93.7 if they programed it right if they did like this.

If they programed Star 93.7 right (Like that) they could've lasted longer.

They could've also do like this?

They can still do like that and it would be sucessfull, either HOT AC or AC like those and they will be successfull.
But what they are doing now, is not good

How do you know it would be successful? Because YOU like it? Some formats in some markets just don't have enough fans to be profitable. Deal with it. Entercom isn't going to screw with Mike as it makes very good money. You do NOT speak for a majority of Boston radio listeners. Just because a format works in one market does not mean it will work somewhere else.

Exactly. I'm 45 and love the station. They also have liners that say something like "We play everything...except this" and have Debby Boone's 'You Light Up My Life' playing for a couple of seconds although I think they HAVE played that song in its entirety. :D Other liners apologize for playing certain songs (after playing them) and that they'll never play it again. If they started playing more country or something, I'd go elsewhere. Mike can stay as is!

Lauro,
When you get a few million dollars and can buy a station and program it to your tastes, THEN you can tell us.
I'm betting Mike does well enough for Entercom AS IS, so why the hell make a change? You're the flip side of a guy who shows up on the Philadelphia board, yowling in 8th-grade-flunked English that there's too much R&B on the dial down here, and wanting a lily-white oldies format to go up against CBS' WOGL. It won't happen as OGL is solidly in the top 5 down here. I speak all this from being 34 years in this business as a DJ and engineer.
