Mike FM's Manny

Has anyone heard this parody that Mike FM has made as a parody of Mandy? It is about Manny going to L.A. It is quite funny!

based of course on Barry Manilow's "Mandy". The song was also used in Chicago by a DJ (Steve Dahl,
who lost to Howie in the Hall of Fame balloting)
as a way to poke fun at that city's Wally Phillips.

>>Dahl went as far as to create a parody song called, "Oh, Wally," set to the tune of Barry Manilow's song "Mandy" in which a lovesick listener from Tinley Park, Illinois calls Phillips for travel information, companionship and maybe even a dinner or some other freebie.

I heard it the morning after the trade and I've now heard it so much I'm tired of it. :-\

Merely a re-appropriation of the "Oh Randy" parody based on failed Raiders WR Randy Moss.

It worked the first time...why not milk it?

This was a promo for Mike FM. I didn't find much of it funny at all. The lyrics mention the station at least three times.

Toucher and Rich's Manny piece on 'BCN was much funnier, I thought. I can't find it on their website, though.

I heard it today a couple of times. They also did a few Madonna/A-Rod parody songs last weekend when the Yankees were in town.

I enjoy their imaging as a whole...very creative.

Every parody on Mike FM's website is seems to cover that subject. I like the Sox as much as anyone else, but with the daily Sox O' Clock hour and these, the station is a little Sox-obsessed for a station that doesn't have any personalities to talk about the Sox. Its obvious why they're doing it; then again, guess they're not that much more obsessed than the rest of the area media.

They did the same thing with the Pats during the Superbowl run last season. It's being local and topical...what's wrong with that?

Nothing at all. It just seemed kinda cheesy to me, dropping in the call letters as part of the song. Takes away from the pure parody, like the one I heard on T&R on 'BCN.

Didn't want another station to steal it and claim it was theirs, I guess. Kind of like a spoof
of "Viva Las Vegas" put together by the morning show at WGIR-FM. "Viva Manch Vegas",
as found online, opens with someone saying, "It's Greg and the Morning Buzz". So if anyone
wants to steal it...

I bet if the AVERAGE listener heard the two while scanning the dial, they would remember Mike's and being Mike's for the fact their name was in the song (this isn't a blast on T&R, I like their show!). Now that may take away from the "pure parody" (whatever that means), but it the listener remembers the station, Mike accomplished something!

i had the same thought Thursday after hearing the Manny's-gone news (using Manilow to do a Manny send-off), but i've never felt comfortable with any finished product i've attempted along these lines. (Parody tunes) there is a reason why they pay me to PLAY them and not SING them. ;)

it's a Yoda-esque moment for any radio pro with a slight range of freedom: take an idea and try to spin it into something timely, topical (local) and funny. Yoda always said: "Try not. Do." Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

but i have never found Doyle's stuff "awful" as was noted here. he's constantly challenging himself - which from a creative standpoint is the best thing you can do. and his parody collections have sold more copies than my novel did - so for that, i'll give him major props.

and the reason you want people to listen to YOUR station is to have people remember the call letters of YOUR station. there is no such thing as putting YOUR call letters out there too often, especially on YOUR station. and it's even better when YOUR call letters wind up on THEIR station. so if YOUR station does something that is timely, topical, local and funny - then brand the heck out of that thing. it's YOUR's - and don't let anyone forget it.
