Mike Harvey vs. Dick Bartley. SuperGold vs. Solid Gold?

Re: Bartley on Indiana airwaves

You might be able to pull it off WLQT, 99.9, Dayton Saturday nights.
______________

Both do a pretty decent show, but it's Bartley who would make me cringe every time he'd screw up (often) by not being ready, not having something cued up, or especially when he says "that's from, let's see, I think</>...."

We have a Winner, Dick Bartley!

A Technical mistake, or a Temporary Brain Fart wouldn't make me Cringe, in fact I would laugh. I was speaking about their voice's, why Bartley is so much better!

Thanks for the tip, gr8oldies! I tuned into 99.9 on the way to my class reunion in Hagerstown Saturday evening. It faded in and out at first, but got better (and to the point of being totally clear) the nearer I got, which is about 7 miles closer to Dayton. ;-) I'll have to try it from my home stereo sometime.

Now I know I just might have a viable option to listen to Bartley again.

not so fast

Just because you like Bartley's voice better doesn't mean his show is better than Supergold. It appears many like either or both guys.

OK, I am showing a little bias, but this was my Thread!

Harvey always sounded energetic but weak. Bartley, less energy, yet more natural & interesting. Some early 80's Syndicators & Networks like Transtar did things on the cheap, yet it all seemed to work. OldiesCat, if anyone gets to sing your last great Name Jingle in the Sky, prey that it won't be by "Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids"! And one more thing about Harvey, about 6 years ago he had some sort of Country Music TV Show with Racing and Trucks. He looked like Uncle Jessie from the Dukes of Hazzard!

Re: Bartley used to be the cadillac of oldies shows

I too cut my teeth and learned about many oldies from Dick Bartley as well as Bob Worthington. I met Bartley in the past when he visited radio stations and he used to recognize my voice when I called in requests.

I enjoyed his spotlights when he played some of the other hits by big artists like DION DIMUCCHI. Little Diane, Lovers Who Wander, Love Came To Me were all big hits but of course don't test today. How I would love to hear DRIP DROP or DONNA THE PRIMA DONNA on a great oldies station.

Trouble with Harvey, he isn't heard too many places. I also note how (in the past - can't hear him in any areas I visit) many of his songs were the mono versions.

Bartley's show used to cover a broader range of oldies, from late 50s to early 70s. He didn't focus on doo-wop or early 60s, of course, but would play early 60s more frequently. Back then, it offered more variety. Now, like others have observed, it's gone considerably downhill.

Now it's mostly mid-60s to mid-70s. I don't see why he couldn't include a few late 50s-early 60s as often as he throws in 70s. After all, it is "still" an OLDIES show and it's on a weekend, which used to mean something.

Bartley's show has seemed to decline in the past couple of years, doing the same kind of spotlights. If I hear BROTHER LOUIE again I'll vomit. He plays it frequently.

He could have done a FATS DOMINO spotlight during the New Orleans fiasco. Or could have focused on the great oldies that came out of that city, like Ernie K. Doe, Lee Dorsey, Gary U.S. Bonds, etc. Nope. Those artists aren't important anymore.

The SUNDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX on one of those satellite oldies channels I heard recently sounds a lot better, with GENE PITNEY, ELVIS, FOUR SEASONS, etc., played regularly.

BTW, the intro below is PR from Bartley's web site or a radio station site.

I always had a hard time trying to decide which I liked better. At one time I had both shows at the same time which was fun because I could go back and forth choosing which ever song I liked best. Actually at one time briefly I had FOUR oldies shows on Saturday night! (Bartley,Harvey,Wolfman and a local show.) I grew up listening to Mike as a local DJ, so I liked the energy of his show, but Dick Bartley's show was on in my town first, so I kinda think of him as the pioneer of the Saturday night oldies party. He also had a much broader playlist, and gave us more "oh, wow!" material. I can only hear them on-line now. I don't care for either show now. I heard "American Gold" recently in my travels and it sounded more like a middle-of-the-road '70s A/C show than an oldies show...nothing before '65 or '66 for that matter if he even played any '60s. all I heard was a lot of Elton John and Dooby Bros. stuff. B-o-o-o-r-i-n-g!!! I'll vote for Bartley over Harvey as for the way their shows used to sound...Good imaging, spots, jingles, trivia, etc, but the larger playlist gives Bartley the edge.

Re: Bartley used to be the cadillac of oldies shows

Wow, thanks for your comments!. I need to be honest as I've not heard either of these guys in 5 Years, and it's been 15 Years since I worked with Harvey. You mention Mono versions, and lack of Affiliates. I'm pretty sure that Harvey had more than Bartley in the 80's & Early 90's, not that it means anything. And Mono Songs by the bunch. Sometimes just the Left channel, or a Right Channel of what was to be a Stereo recording would be aired.

Sorry to hear Bartley is now playing Brother Louie. He was so knowledgeable and Intense in what he spoke about. There is little to no depth in Brother Louie, or Mike Harvey for that matter!

American Gold has rusted!

You got that right. The show is so white-bread. It's been that way for years, unfortunately. I know it's prerecorded but it could include a broader playlist and a few more early 60s gems (maybe even a few spotlights from that era).

Perhaps that's what the radio PDs want. Bland stuff. Doesn't appeal to me, though.

Harvey, Barley and-----

He hasn't used those old jingles in awhile- completely updated (at least it sounds like it) his sound a couple of years ago.

and, really, it's almost impossible to have this conversation these days without including Tom kent's shows. Talk about energy!

Tom Kent plays too many "non oldie" songs from the '70s and '80s.

Incredible, this Tom Kent...

I had never heard his Show. Just spent the last two Hours listening. Perhaps the best Syndicated Oldies Show there is?. Loved all the "Motown Package" Drake Jingles, and Charlie V.D. is always refreshing to hear. Runs rings around Harvey, and circles around Bartley!

Re: Bartley on Indiana and Ohio airwaves

Glad to be of help. WLQT won't play him during December, however (they go all Christmas).
______________

I know you were being sarcastic, but those artists aren't all that important anymore in the eyes (ears?) of many. I'm sure Bartley (as well as Harvey) take their cues from what their affiliates are playing. My guess is that if they still were heavy on pre-1964 oldies they'd get dropped by a lot of stations.

What is interesting listening to the 1 Hour Demo/Audition/Air check Mp3 at ReelRadio, all the Guest Program Directors. Jay Coffey from KRTH 101 Los Angeles is one of the Testimonial P.D.'s, yet KEARTH never aired the Show?. Those rhythmic Beds & Jingles from the Drake "Motown Package" are unforgettable!

But it's a '70s show and bombed on Infinity's KLUV in Dallas.

The station is going back to a local show on Saturday nights ASAP.

"Hall of Fame, Coast to Coast" is an Oldies show featuring Artists from 64 to 74. "Into the 70's" I assume is all 70's. In any case neither show would have fit on K-EARTH in 2002, however KRTH has changed in the last few Months to welcome in some 70's. Now you see why I was surprised hearing KRTH's P.D. Jay Coffey speaking about how great the show fit. It's never run on 101!

That's one reason oldies radio sucks. They don't SOUND like oldies anymore.

Like I said, weekends should be about more levity and playing wider playlists, including REAL GOLD, not the plastic or overproduced and bland sounding stuff from the crappy 70s...

Just check that YES.NET for playlists on stations running Bartley on Saturday nights.

Yuk. Rescue Me. I'm a Believer. Mony Mony. Brother Louie. American Pie.
All the same junk heard 24/7 on other oldies stations. Nothing creative. No interesting spotlights. No great flashbacks. Callers only echoing what host wants. Blahhhhhhhhh....
