In the late 60s I was doing a talk show on an AM daytimer that spent its mornings broadcasting national religion broadcasts, and at noon we switched to some conservative political commentary of the day, and in the afternoon I did a daily talk show where we tackled religions, politics, and just old fashioned call in radio.
My afternoon announcer and sales rep booked a guest on my afternoon call-in show... some young evangelist from Louisiana who was preaching a "revival meeting series" that week in a local Assembly of God Church. After the show the young preacher went into the parking lot a pulled his Gospel Album out of the trunk of his plain-jane not-very-fancy Ford with Louisiana license plates and presented me with his album.
And that is the day that I met Jimmy Swaggart. Just one more young evangelist... playing in the minor leagues at the time... but with talent to make it to the Major Leagues.
Yup. Like people in all kinds of professions and callings, when he made it to the Major Leagues, he had some behavior problems. The day I met him he was dripping wet with talent and compassion. Driving in heavy traffic through the years left him with some dents in his fenders. Kind of like that flappy-fendered Ford he was driving back then.
